Username -- locked out

Thanks Jerry, but I spoke too soon. It suddenly started asking for the username again. At that point I uninstalled and deleted anything associated with Pegasus on the entire drive and registry. Did a fresh install to the c:\pmail and started again. I only had a few identities defined so no big deal. I lost a couple of emails but not important.

Not blaming Pegasus for any of that, I can understand why it could cause confusion to the system. The only thing I hope David does with v5 is to ONLY define the Mail folder in a single file that is referred to by all other functions.

I did a search "c:\pmail\" on file contents and it returned 47 places. In my humble opinion, 46 of those functions should have referenced a single file (or Registry entry) to find that Path. Hard coding those Paths into 47 different places is just asking for drama.

Just one old programmers opinion though. [:)] I'd still kiss him for that Move/Repair facility alone.

Hi All,

Fool that I am I decided to try the "New Mail folder," option to make backing up more simple as I had not installed to the recommended "C:\PMAIL" folder. All went well it seemed until I closed down.

Now, when I try to start the splash screen pops up then a dialog asking for my user name. I tried all of the Identities and my win-login username but nothing works.

Oh what have I done! [:O]

 {edit}

I checked the PMAIL.INI and it shows "Admin" as the only username but that doesn't get me in either. I tried all case settings and still nothing.

PCONFIG and resulting  pmail.cfg may be different paths and drive letter now. Did you remove or hide all old configuration information so that the installer could not find the old when running in order to get new clean install? Many other files also contain path information too including pmail.ini

Always start with the most basic first and always with install to c:\pmail and not any other location. That has been the default since way back and even with MSDos PMail before winpmail  and for all later versions of winpm-32 also.

Don't know what you mean by the "New Mail folder" option but I can tell you that this forum is full of posts regarding problems with installs not to the default location.  It makes troubleshooting more difficult as well.  Here's what is going on.  When Pegasus starts it it prompts for a username if one isn't specified in the commandline.  It then compares the username entered with the ones it finds in a file named PMAIL.USR.  This file lives in the root \MAIL directory.  If that directory gets moved or Pegasus can't access it then Pegasus can't find the user.  This sounds like what you are experiencing.  Perhaps this info will give you a clue and you will be able to figure it out.

A description of what you did when you tried the "New Mail folder" option would be helpful as well.

Thanks Jerry, yes I first named the Installed folder xPegasus and then Users\appdata\roaming\Pegasus also to xPegasus. I then installed to the suggested C:PMAIL but I did change the case to PMail

I have just been through the entire Registry and changed all the remnant "c:\program files (x86)\Pegasus\" to "CPMail\"

I checked the PMail.cfg and it shows "C:\PMail\Mail"

[:)] Sorry Brian, I meant an install to a new mail folder (the recommended c:\pmail, one I should have used in the first place) as Jerry correctly surmised.

I have made a bit of a mess it seems. PMail.USR shows "A;Admin;Mail Administrator" but no help.

II have found that if I restore the xPegasus in the Program Files folder it all works OK from the new PMail folder.

OK, problem solved!

Did some searching in the PMail\Progams file and found this gem...

mbxmaint_ui.exe

It has a Move command. I navigated to the old xPegasus\... and assigned the new PMail...

Bingo, all back and all emails still intact and even still sorted they way I set up earlier with the reindex.

I think I am in love! If David ever comes to the US he is in for a solid lip-kiss!

Now while you have it working do Help, About, Info button and view display information showing much info and home and new mail location. Copy that and past it into something to save to drive for reference.

If new mail .cnm files are arriving into \mail you  have single user mode install and if .cnm going to ..:\pmail\mail\admin or username then is a multi user install even if only one at this time.

That display will also show exact location of the actual winpm-32 that is being used and location. Display will also show you the temp or tmp location being used.
