Win 7 64 bit installed Pegasus 4.63 won't launch

I am willing to let this old dog lie and move on.

You all have been wonderful trying to help a total stranger who will never be able to repay your kindness.

I am going to try what I can this last morning.  I'll try the suggestions in the 3 posts directly above.

FYI-  Very early I tried to copy old files from old version and dropped them into the

C:\PMAIL\ MAIL\ADMIN\  directory as instructed at the beginning of this long saga.

I copied CNM, PMM/PMI, PMR/PM! and a few others from the list at the beginning.

I got pretty much the result I have now-- Folders show old data 2004 and earlier.

I tried several variations of that and finally gave up.

I deleted that 1st new install and started over with a clean new install.

This time I've tried linking/adding a new mailbox to the old pegasus folders with more or less the same result.

I only see old files in old folders pre 2005.

I've tried re-arranging my OLD ver files and re-liking.

Yes there is/was a /D directory in the old version.

I've tried linking to it with the MAIL/D and I've tried copying all the /D files up one level into the MAIL/ and linking that.

Either way I see the same old folder data.

So this is where I am now-- a clean new install that has been un-successful linking to the old folders.

I've disconnected the added mailbox link and got my new install working to poll all 3 of my pop3 addresses.

************************************

I think Jerry's comments 2 messages up assume I still have the old files copied into the new install??

That is not the case.  Also there are no other subdirectories in the old pegasus version.

It was .....\MAIL\D and that's all.  I tried it that way -no good so I copied all the \D files into the \MAIL directory

and tried the link again with the same result.

************************************

Today I will try Michael's suggestion above

1. It might be necessary to delete the file hierarch.pm in

the old mailbox you're trying to link in (maybe rename and only delete

after seeing success of some kind, trays will be gone if doing so).

2. It might help to run mbxmaint_ui.exe (from Pegasus Mail's ...\programs\ subdirectory) for fixing folder indexes of your old folder files.

Failing that- I will move on with a clean new install and start housekeeping with a new-more or less empty house!

I can access the old data using the old pegasus if I need an address or a receipt I will just copy paste the info into notepad or word or a new

mail message.  (Brian I know you've fussed at me to throw out my old Pegasus version and never run it again but it is the ONLY way I have

to access my data from the last 9 years.)

Thanks very much- My ball-cap is tipped to you all.....

Peace!!

 ************* final edit**************

I have copied the old address book files to the new install and now have what appears to be full access

to my old address books.  This is great BUT I wonder if using the old address book data will in ANY way cause problems

in the new install.  I'd hate to find some time down the road that my address books aren't quite up to par due to

the use of these old files

Some background--  I am on a new computer.

New last year anyway.  I copied Pegasus V 4.41 from my old XP computer to

this one which is running windows 7 64 bit.

At first Pegasus appeared to be working OK on the new machine but after a while I realized it would not

let me delete any inbox messages that were older than the move.

I can read and delete new messages and I can read old messages but not delete them.

I can add new contacts to the address book but cannot change/delete old ones.

I've asked about this here before but cannot figure out how to fix this even though some

folks offered me detailed directions I've had no luck.

So I decided to install version 4.63

My 1st try I "updated" the old Pegasus.

After that it would not launch.  I get a brief flash of a box on the screen which I believe

is the pegasus logo but it's just a fraction of a second and then nothing.

No error and task manager does not show Pegasus running in the background.

I did a system restore to a point before the Pegasus upgrade and my old Pegasus

was back and functioning. (Whew!!)

I tried another install in a new location.

Same thing.  When I try to launch the new version I get a logo flash and nothing.

Now my old version will run but I would like to get the new one OR another one- any version

to run.

If I get a new install working, I'll configure it and slowly move what I need to save manually and eventually

abandon the older crippled version.

Should I try to install an older version in a new location??

I just read David Harris's message dated March 2013.

It sounds like he's working on Pegasus again.  I thought it had been abandoned or at least no new

updates were going to come?

Is there hope for an entirely new version of Pegasus sometime later this year??

The failure of Pegasus to start as you described can happen when Pegasus Mail does not have access to the mailbox directory.  In order to help troubleshoot we need more information about the current state of Pegasus Mail.  The contents of Info button located in Help | About Pegasus Mail... will be a good starting point so copy and paste that content in a reply.

I've followed your links and read many of them but still stumped....

Most say what NOT to do.

OK--  Let me re-phrase: Will ANY version of Pegasus work acceptably on a PC

running Win 7 64bit??

IF so, WHAT directory is recommended for installation and what ver of Pegasus?

Absolutely.
IF so, WHAT directory is recommended for installation and what ver of Pegasus?
The default installation directory is C:\PMAIL which works fine.  You have two options from where you are now.  You can do a clean install or you can modify your XP install then copy it.  Both have unique considerations.  It can be a bit tedious copying data from the old install to the new one if you do a clean install but if you copy an existing installation, although I consider it easier,  you can bring along baggage from previous upgrades.  It all depends on how old the XP install is.  If it's an original v4.41 install then I would go the copy route but if it has been upgraded from previous versions then I would do a clean install.  In either case you need to uninstall what you have now.  You should find entries for both Pegasus Mail and the Pegasus Mail HTML renderer in the add/remove programs list.  Backup your entire \Pegasus folder, run the uninstalls then delete the remaining \Pegasus folder.  You can now run a clean install of v4.63 to the default path of C:\PMAIL.  Use Han's guide to filenames and extension as a reference for what files to copy from the XP install.  Find it here: http://www.vandenbogaerde.net/pegasusmail/pf_pmfiles.html  Avoid overwriting any configuration files.  Ask if you are unsure.

If you wish to attempt the copy from XP route please post back and I will give you the steps to do try that.

Today I copied my old working Pegasus v4.41 folder to another location.

I used control panel uninstaller to remove the new Pegasus v4.63 and the HTML

renderer.

I rebooted.

My old working Pegasus program does not show in the control panel program

remover list of programs.

It's still working but windows won't help me remove it.

What now??  A manual delete seems in order but that involves REG edit I think??

Any tips what I need to search out and delete to remove my old Pegasus?

Is there a way to get windows to do this for me even tho this Pegasus is not listed?

IDEA here--  What if I install new version and have it update the old one.  I'm thinking that

would make it show in the un-install list.  If I then used windows un-installer would that

clean up the registry keys?

What is left is the files you copied from the XP machine.  That directory (\Program Files\Pegasus ?) can be deleted as long as you have a backup.

I don't recall having problems with a clean install even when old registry entries exist.  It has been awhile since I did a clean install but IIRC, if the installer detects an old version you can opt for a new install rather than an upgrade.  Default install should be to C:\PMAIL.

Out of curiosity you could do a registry search for "pmail',  "pegasus mail" and "winpm-32.exe" to see what you find.  Wish I could do it here but I have a LAN install.

First of all: The Registry keys are updated by Pegasus Mail itself and its installer if required. Secondly, updating the old version will install to the wrong location, so don't do it. Just removing the complete Pegasus Mail directory including all its files will do the job, but you should keep a backup of your mailbox data.

I have backed up my old pegasus folder to another location.  I used un-install to remove non functional new verson and manually deleted old version and folders.

I did a new install to C:\PMAIL.

Now I've looked at Han's guide to filenames but now my ignorance is showing.

Can you help me with some suggested files that I should copy from the old Pegasus to the new Pegasus.

Han's guide is SO LONG.

If possible, I'd like all my old e-mail folders including sent and saved mail and current inbox.

If possible I'd like old address books.

I can re-configure my pop and smpt servers and don't care about previous IDs or saved signatures unless that is easy.

FYI, I am on a stand alone computer not a network.

I do not need or want a password to access Pegasus.

Thanks again for any insight you can offer!

I have been putting this fix off for months and now have a few days to get it right I hope!!

Here is a list that I put together yesterday.  I had one of the PMail beta testers review it and make additions but the revised list is attached to a personal email which I failed to make available from my office.   This list is pretty comprehensive though so I thought it worth posting so you can get on with it.  Once done restoring, if you find anything missing just post back and we'll figure out whether it can be restored.  Please read completely before starting.

Restore these files from the old mailbox directory to the new mailbox directory:

Common files that exist on all systems:
*.CNM files              These are new mail messages
*.PMM/*.PMI file pairs   These are the folder files
*.PMR/*PM! file pairs    These are address book files
WINPMFUA.PM              This is the recently used address list

Files that may exist depending on whether the function was used:
*.PMN files              These are annotation files (may not be any)
*.PML files              These are distribution list files (black.pml & white.pml are default)
*.PMC                    These are filter rule files (may not be any)
IMAP.PM                  Contains IMAP profiles (may not be one)
SIGNAMES.PM              Contains the names of the signature files (may not be one)
LOCALS*.PMS              Signature files (Local address variants) (may not be any)
INETSIG*.PMS             Signature files (Internet address variants) (may not be any)
MHSSIG*.PMS              Signature files (Novell MHS variants) (unlikely to be any)

Optional files to consider restoring:
USRDICT3.PMD             Contains user added dictionary words
*.PND                    Contain POP3 and SMTP hosts configurations
SPam*.Dat                Contain info used by Content Control
  *.PNC                    Content Control set definition

Do not overwrite the following configuration files:
  PMAIL.INI
  STATE.PMJ
  HIERARCH.PM
  FOLSTATE.PM

Pegasus Mail should be closed when restoring files.

One additional suggestion.  If you are prompted to overwrite a file, rename the original file first then do the restore and test the function associated with that file to be sure all is well.  To be extra safe, make a copy of the new mailbox directory before starting the restores.

<p>Here is a list that I put together yesterday. </p><p>Restore these files from the old mailbox directory to the new mailbox directory: </p><p>Common files that exist on all systems:   *.CNM files              These are new mail messages   *.PMM/*.PMI file pairs   These are the folder files   *.PMR/*PM! file pairs    These are address book files   WINPMFUA.PM              This is the recently used address list Files that may exist depending on whether the function was used:   *.PMN files              These are annotation files (may not be any)   *.PML files              These are distribution list files (black.pml & white.pml are default)   *.PMC                    These are filter rule files (may not be any)   IMAP.PM                  Contains IMAP profiles (may not be one)   SIGNAMES.PM              Contains the names of the signature files (may not be one)   LOCALS*.PMS              Signature files (Local address variants) (may not be any)   INETSIG*.PMS             Signature files (Internet address variants) (may not be any)   MHSSIG*.PMS              Signature files (Novell MHS variants) (unlikely to be any) Optional files to consider restoring:   USRDICT3.PMD             Contains user added dictionary words   *.PND                    Contain POP3 and SMTP hosts configurations   SPam*.Dat                Contain info used by Content Control   *.PNC                    Content Control set definition <b>Do not overwrite the following configuration files:</b>   PMAIL.INI   STATE.PMJ   HIERARCH.PM   FOLSTATE.PM</p><p>Pegasus Mail should be closed when restoring files. </p><p>One additional suggestion.  If you are prompted to overwrite a file, rename the original file first then do the restore and test the function associated with that file to be sure all is well.  To be extra safe, make a copy of the new mailbox directory before starting the restores. </p><p> </p>

I'm getting there but missing all my old folders and some new mail.

FYI

OLD path was PROGRAMS/PMAIL/MAIL/D I found all the files given in the list above there and

copied them to the

NEW path which is C:PMAIL/MAIL/ADMIN I copied many files to here.

Now I have a new messages folder with some content but some of my new messages are not there.

That is not a big problem.

I have none of my folders which contain 1000s of messages - many I would hate to loose!

I did copy all PMM and PMI files as directed but don't have any of my many folders.

Address books are working.

I copied the PND files but Pegasus shows no POP3 or SMTP configurations.  I can re-enter this info

myself and it is not a biggie.

I have 3 identities on my old Pegasus and can re-build them again.

Signatures did transfer

I sure would like to get my folders back.

The rest is no problem

All of the OLD messages from my old inbox that I was unable to move or delete are in my

new inbox and I CAN delete them!!

NONE of my new mail since the transfer to this new Win 7 PC are showing.

That's 3 months worth missing.  Actually it's a scattering of dates over that time but

probably about 20 messages.

I'd like to get them back if possible but the missing folders are really needed.

Thanks!

dd

Understandable.  You are restoring from the XP box.  The directory where you backed up the Win7 installation of Pegasus Mail before doing the uninstall can be accessed using the Pegasus 'Add mailbox to list' function.  With your folder list active go to the Folder pull-down menu and select 'Add mailbox to list".  Select the add directory option then enter the path to the mailbox directory of the backup.  The message content will appear at the bottom of the folder list.

As for the missing folders.  The folder structure is stored in a file called HIERARCH.PM.  This file contains configuration settings so isn't one that can be restored when the new installation is to a different path.  This file gets updated each time Pegasus starts by using the .PMM/.PMI pairs to create the folder list.  Here's the rub.  If you had trays within trays, that structure was maintained in the old HIERARCH so is lost.  None of the folders are lost, it's just that the tray structure gets flattened.  This may look like lost folders but they should be somewhere in the folder list.  Any folders you created while running the old Win7 instance will need to be recovered by copying from the added mailbox directory as per above.

I wonder KyDan if you made a search and perhaps read my last message on 9 March under

Re: Transferring PM 4.63 Folders from Win XP to Win 8 (64bit)

I managed to successfully transfer my old data from the XP to the Win 8 machine with forum advice.   I assume that doing it on Win 8 64-bit that Win 7 should also work?  Hope you are successful.

Not sure if this will ever work perfectly but I'll get by.....

I'll try to make this brief--  I have been using Pegasus mail for ..... a long time.

Maybe 13 years??  I've moved from old PC to new PC at least 3 times.  Probably 4

Somehow during that time I wound up with 2 paths to 2 different Pegasus programs and files.

Somehow Pegasus was showing me all files, all folders, all sent mail- from both paths-

some going back to May, 2004

Now jump to today-

For what ever reason my new install is showing me only the very oldest folder files. from 01 to 04

I'm perfectly willing to delete or abandon them.

I would like to get the new install to show me folder info from 04 to present.

Currently I can only see them if I launch an old Pegasus.

 ********************************************

My thoughts-- worst case-- I am able to open a very old version of Pegasus and access my latest folder info.

I can see mail I sent last week and find receipts back from present to ancient history!!

I can't seem to get them to show in the new install.

Unless you have another idea, I'll have to go with running 2 versions.

I'll use the new install for all new mail and sending new messages-- a clean fresh start.

When I need to access old stuff- even as new as last week-  I'll launch the old version.

I'm just puzzled that I can see the very oldest files in the new install but cannot seem

to get it to show me anything newer than 04.

I do see the flattened folders as you said but they contain only very old data.

First try at Pegasus "add mailbox function" did not do anything that I can see.

I'll try it a few more ways/times before I give up.

There are at least 2 paths to old folders.

AND I've moved the entire mess to my desktop.

I may try putting it back where it was in C:/programs/ and then try to link "add mailbox" that way...

Thanks for all your help so far!!

Don't move it back to the \program files folder.  That won't gain you anything.  Can you browse to the mailbox directory(ies) using Windows Explorer?  If so, copy the path from Windows Explorer and paste it into the 'Add mailbox to list' directory path.  FWIW,  the 'Desktop' location in Windows file structure is buried pretty deeply.  Consider putting them someplace like C:\TEMP\PMAIL1 & C:\TEMP\PMAIL2.  They will be much easier to access.
