Problem changing sending mail settings PLEASE HELP!

Latest is 4.63.

Did you try to send without encryption, i.e. with SSL/TLS set to never and authentication with user name and password?

If so what was the result?

After year of harmonious use, my ISP, Comcast, has decided that one can no longer use port 25 for SENDING emails!  They claim it's a common port for spammers and the like!  I have tried to change the smpt setting to port 465. the port they recommend, but I get an error message saying that the connection was refused every time I try to send anything!  I changed the setting to another port, 587 but still the problem occurs.  With Comcast tech support, I tried sending email for their web mail site and email and sending works fine!  They say that indicates that email is working fine and the problem is some setting in Pegasus!

I'm really upset that I may have to stop using Pegasus after years and years of use!  To make the changes I go to tools-internet options-sending (smpt)-edit then to the server port box. There I change the number fro 25 to one of the 2 they recommend but all I get is error messages when I try to send.  Is there something more I would need to  do to change ports? Is that even the right place to change the port?  I've also gone into security and turned on SSL and turned it off in various combinations with the accepted ports but to no avail!

Please go to Internet Mail Options and check the box marked "Create internet session log" and read the help about it under "General Internet mail settings". Configure as Comcast recommend and try again (port 465 usually requires "direct SSL").  The file created should have more detail about what is happening.

All you need to do is enter the appropriate settings under the security tab in your server definitions. (Tools | Internet Options)

I've done this several times and the error message is: "Handshake error:the server has either shut down the connection or has returned a response Pegasus mail cannot recognize"

Try extending the timeout.  What have you been told by the ISP about security i.e. to use SSL or STARTTLS? Have you tried STARTTTLS on port 587?

Hi Caisson

Thanks for answering. I have tried both ports my ISP, comcast, allows and I've tried each with and without both types of SSL but to no avail! I've even gone into my router and Windows firewall and specifically created exceptions for Pegasus, even though I never had to before. Still can't SEND email anymore!

I'm far from being an expert on this, and have had my share of problems, all of which have been answered here with the help of those more able.

I too have comcast, and went through much the same thing when I replaced my modem and router.  The best I can do is tell you what my settings are.  I can't really give you an explanation of why.  Be aware also that your settings are determined, to some extent, by the security settings you have set on your modem and router.

  Go to Tools\Internet Options|Sending (SMTP)\Edit.

General:  Enter a name for this definition:  SMTP <default>

                 Server host name:  smtp.comcast.net

                 Server TCP/IP port:   465

                  Timeout:   180

Security:  Via direct SSL connect

SMTP Authorization: Login to the SMTP server...:  Username:  xxxx  (whatever is to the left of the "@" in your email address).

Password:  yyyy (as an example.  Your password, of course, is of your own choosing)

Maybe that will help.  The important part, I think, is to have the security setting match your modem and/or router.

You can also try port 587 without encryption (Security tab) but continue to use authentication option 2.
