no headers in HTML printouts; crashing with Banner text option

Egad. The only corruption here is a corruption in the brain of the user (me).

[:$]

As a very long time user I have been updating pmail in place rather than doing fresh installs, and this led me to overlook the "Where a choice for formats exist display the fancy version" on the message READER, as I had turned off use of formatted text in message REPLYING.

With display of fancy version on, the Message tab shows the formatted html, and more important, it prints formatted properly, headers and all.

I knew it had to be some stupid little thing I was doing wrong.

(In case it's of use to the developers, my mental bug was in thinking that to get html to print, I had to go to the Attachments tab, select the html, and then print that. I suppose that should work too, just like printing from the Message tab, but that's a different issue.)

Anyway, case closed.

Have been using PMAIL for about a decade and love it, but ...

I suspect I'm doing something quite simple wrong, and am at wit's end here, having tried numerous different workarounds.

I have PMAIL  4.63, just installed IERenderer 2.4.7.6, updated LibTidy, all to no avail.

Symptoms:

If I view  the HTML version of a message and print it, I get the html printed nicely, but no headers, no matter what I check on the Print mail message window.

If I ask for Banner text on the first page, Pegasus crashes almost instantly after OK.

Program crashes the same way if I ask for Banner text on the Attachments/Plain text version of the message. Banner text seems to crash the program reliably.

The Message (first tab) version of the message prints fine and the Print options mostly work (including the Banner option), except Informational Footer has never worked.

All I really want is HTML formatted messages printed with their header information, so I can print the nicely formatted version AND know who/when sent.

What can I do to enable this?

Here in case it's useful is my ierenderer.ini:

ActiveContent=NO
AllowFrames=NO
Cache-Days=1
Cache-Path=C:\Documents and Settings\Davis\Application Data
checkutf8=true
DefaultFontName=Tahoma
DefaultFontSize=12

WantBl=Yes
WantBlacklist=YES
Wantcache=Yes
wantcss=no
WantFraudChecks=YES
WantIEcache=No
WarnFileExtensions=YES
WarnMailToParams=YES
Zoom=100

(Have taken to printing relevant msgs twice: once from the tab Message tab (so I get headers) then again from the Attachments/HTML tab so I get formatting. Egad.

All assistance most welcome.

In your IERENDERER.INI file I notice that DefaultPrinting=Yes.  Mine is set to NO.   I wonder if YES is telling IERenderer to use Pegasus default print processing rather than its own.

Thanks for the suggestion. I changed it to YES, but that has no effect. HTML prints neatly but without headers, and asking for Banner text produces an instant crash. Sigh.

I am not a fan of uninstall/reinstall but I think it would be worth a try especially since IERenderer is such a small app.  I would rename the ierenderer.ini file(s) before the reinstall then reconfigure IERenderer from scratch.  Also, check to make sure there isn't an orphaned ierenderer.ini file in the \pmail\programs directory.  Early versions of IERenderer placed it there instead of in the mailbox directories.  Be sure Pegasus Mail is closed when you uninstall/reinstall IER.

One other option is to disable IER.  Default HTML rendering will then be handled by BearHTML.  It doesn't have a GUI (config is via edits to an .ini file) but it is a capable HTML renderer.  Make sure you have the most recent version which you can find in the downloads section of this site or at http://www3.telus.net/public/irelam/.

Removed  IERenderer completely, removed all Bear files. Reinstalled IERenderer and latest Bear.

No change.

If I turn off IERenderer and look at the HTML Text in the Attachments tab, I see nothing. Evidently Bear is not operating either, so I've got something wrong here.

 Reiterating the issue, perhaps more clearly than my original above:

With IERenderer installed and operating, I can preview the HTML version of a message in the Attachments tab, and print it via the Print dialogue, but I never get any headers (or an informational footer). If I try to use the Banner text option to add header-like info to the printout, Pegasus invariably crashes, whether I'm looking at the Plain Text in the Attachments tab or the HTML text.

The Print with Banner text option works when viewing the message in the Message tab.

If I turn off IERenderer via its GUI, exit and restart the program, then select HTML text in the Attachments tab, I see an empty window. Viewing the Plain text in the Attachments tab works fine.

Any more ideas?

tnx

It sounds like you have a corrupted message stream. Could you please forward a copy to me at irelam@telus.net (author Bearhtml). In order to check out the Mime headers etc I need the whole message file (*.cnm) which you can copy from whichever folder it is in right now to your NewMail directory (ie: c:\pmail\mail) and attach that file to a new message to me from your Newmail directory.  I will pass a copy on to Michael (IERenderer) to check out too.

For checking out the crashes please try to get a crash dump.

if you feel at all inclined, I would like you to try using Bearhtml instead of IERenderer for a while. All you need to do is to rename the IERenderer.fff file to something like IERenderer.ffx and then restart Pegasus Mail. That supposes that you have Bearhtml installed already. Then all you need to do is check Bearhtml.ini (in Pegasus Mail executables directory) contains a line PRTFLAGS=3 the 3 indicates both headers and footers are wanted.
