'No formatted contents' message in message reader

The message is badly formatted and cannot be recovered. Please suggest to the sender that they forward the original message in simple text format.,  The original message contains blocks of binary zeroes and has wrongly coded mime headers.

Hello

One of our staff received an email today from a client. When they opened the message, the following text was displayed:

No formatted contents: Please try the following link to display plain text, if any.

When the link is clicked the message reader is filled with question marks. The message can only be read by opening the HTML attachment. Apparently, all the messages from this particular client display this way.

The first line in the HTML attachment contains the following:

<<META content="text/html; charset=unicode" http-equiv=Content-Type>

The raw view contains the following beneath the headers:

------_=_NextPart_001_01CE86C9.F9EEECC4

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????=

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????=

There are many lines containing question marks, followed by a plain text disclaimer and then HTML tags and text (the message) beneath that.

Is this an issue with the client's setup or is it a problem at our end?

Thanks!

Looks pretty much like some kind of charset issue, but we'd need the full message for proper inspection, preferably to beta-reports [at] pmail.gen.nz.

BTW: What does the Content-Type header of the HTML part say about its charset? Since you say it is readable it most probably does not specify Unicode like the above META tag says - otherwise you wouldn't be able to read it right away. IOW: The HTML part might use Unicode although the META tag says so ...

Well it clearly can't be both plain text and Unicode. So one of these settings is incorrect.  The mass of question marks suggests binary data, which is likely unicode.  So the message preparer has a problem. Pegasus Mail can detect and decode Unicode so the cause of the problem seen in Pegasus Mail is the Mime Part header saying it is plain text.

Your course of action:  either attempt to edit the CNM file in the NewMail directory, to change this header, or send the message to us to confirm the problem.  (send to irelam@telus.net  and I will pass it on if necessary). Include the message as an attachment to a message to me, by drag and dropping it into the message to me.
