POP3 attacks

The past weeks we have had a number of attacks with lots of POP3 connection attempts from specific IP addresses on the Internet that on at least one occasion has been so heavy that it caused Mercury to crash. One way to fend it off is to use this POP3 event daemon:

The daemon that is created by Petr Jaklin has existed for some years but was just updated to a new version with improved configuration dialog.

Seems to be a nice tool but it does not really help if you use stunnel on windows to secure your connections (as you have to, because the Mercury SSL implementation sucks). All IPs are coming in as 127.0.0.1 and once this IP is blocked, nobody else can connect anymore...

Mercury 4.80 (still in beta testing) uses OpenSSL instead of the outdated CryptLib library, though.
