I have been using Pegasus for 15 years or so but I have come up against something that I have not seen before.  In the past when I asked for any new mail from my server, everything on the server was downloaded.  Now Pegasus is not downloading any mail with attachments, but they appear when I go into the file menu and click on the item "Selective Mail Download".  I then have the opportunity to either download the message and attachment or delete it.  This method is referred to in "Help" as designed to reduce telephone toll costs.

This may have been useful before the days of ADSL or Fibre, but is pointless now.  However I cannot find a way of stopping this happening.  I wish to get back to the situation which operated up till about 2 weks ago where the download is automatic.  Does anyone know how to stop the "Selective Mail Download" from operating?

I have Pegasus running on a laptop and in this case, after a normal install the mail is downloaded without any subsystem getting in the way.  In both cases the operating sytem is Windows 7 Home Premium.

Silly question: how many messages do you have in your inbox? If more than 750 or so then Pegasus gets flakey to say the least.

Check Tools | Internet options | Receiving (Pop 3) settings (Download Controls) and make sure the download values are still at zero.

I suggest you look into download controls, which are found in the POP3 Internet profile. You may be restricting the download of large messages (including their attachments). You may be refusing messages with attachments, check the setting. You may also be leaving downloaded messages on the server, and the server continues to offer these messages to be downloaded, as they have been marked as "seen".  You may also want to check on the download timeout amount and see if the downloads complete within your value, otherwise POP3 requires that all of the messages that have already been downloaded be marked as unread, so another attempt at downloading of the complete content from the server can be attempted.

The selective download process is entirely different from the periodic downloads of normal mail.   You didn't mention what caused the change in behavior "two weeks ago" ??

In reply to Aderoy, I have kept no messages in my inbox, just about 40 in "New Mail".

Caisson, "Download Controls" does not have "download only unread mail ..........ticked.

I have put 50 into the "Download at most" box and 500000 in the "nothing over " box.  Default action is "Download" .

Irelam, I can't see anything which restricts large messages or their attachments and I have not asked for messages to be left on the server.  I can't see a box to check for a download time out.

I really want to avoid the selective download process altogether, I have never used it before and I am only using it now because the system is making me!

As to what caused the change, I was adding a second email address as an "Identity" with its name, ISP details and password details etc.  The system now downloads mail for both identities, but with this irritating elective mail download needed fanything which has an attachment.

Thanks to you all for your help, but I still have the problem!!!

Made the change as you suggested, but it made no difference.
