POssible to TURN OFF Blacklist Checking?

I guess the information on disabling blacklist checking in Bearhtml is irrelevant if you are using IERenderer. The phishing check, in both cases is able to be disabled via the menu item Tools/Options/Incoming Mail/Hyperlinks being unchecked.

I was under the impression that de-selecting the "Hyperlinks>Check for Suspicious Phishing URLS" option would stop PM from checking for blacklisting every time I click a link, which takes a LONG time.

This did not work on my old XP Pro system, so I assumed it was due to something wrong in that old system.

However, I now have a new Win 7 Pro system and this does not work to disable this annoying feature on it either.

Is there a way to disable blacklist checking?

Thanks,

Simeon

Blacklisting and checking suspicious URLs isn't the same. Which renderer are you using (check via IERenderer's button menu top right on PM's main toolbar)? If it's IERenderer open the configuration dialog from the same menu and go to the Security tab where you may change the respective settings one by one according to your preferences.

If you are using Bearhtml, there is an entry in Bearhtml.ini that states Wantbl=Yes  change it to wantbl=No  .Before you do this take a moment to consider the effect of doing this is.  The Blacklist is only checked if you click on a link.  This is the commonest way that bad guys can get phishing attacks, infections and malware onto your PC.  The only other method for checking before clicking a link, is to check the Pegasus Mail status line which shows the target of a link. This happens for all links good and bad, and does not approve of the clicking action on a link. You  are for all purposes just allowed the target site to download to your PC anything they like.

And most importantly, the Anti-Phishing alert is vital for things like online banking and shopping.   And finally for the blacklist response time, it uses DNS which is one of the fastest services on the Internet.

On my new computer (WIN 7) I am using IERenderer,  on my old one I used the standard Pegasus renderer as the IERenderer caused problems with my XP system.

I know the diff between the phishing and blacklisting but I found info on these forums that seemed to indicate the phishing option also handled the blacklisting but clearly it ain't so.

I ALWAYS look at the url being displayed in PM on the notification bar to see if it is going to what it is supposed to.

I also run various other spam filters on my mail system and do not rely on PM for that. In addition Norton Internet Security does a fair job these days of alerting me about possible and known phishing sites etc. If there is a link I THINK is safe but there is uncertainty I will check it out online via Google, WhoIs and in various other ways before visiting it.

I also NEVER enter sensitive data or contact info into pages that are linked from an email, I will always go to the official company site if I have an account with them and use their standard login page and see if there is any notices relative to the email I received.

Also, given the blacklist check has happened every time I have clicked a link in PM for years, each time greatly slowing down the time it takes for a link to open in my browser, and I have only ever had a few blacklist alerts come up (all of which were false), seems useless to waste all that time.

Therefore I am greatly appreciative of this information on how to disable it, and thanks also to the other person who responded (cant see their name from this screen).
