4.70 Update

Wow, this is good news, especially the fact that the need for using the somewhat laborious workaround of stunnel has been removed. I have recently switched to Linux Mint because of the impending end of Windows XP support and started using Thunderbird, but I'll certainly give Pegasus and Wine another try then. Thanks for the update!

Hi David & co, using 4.7 for most of the day, and really enjoying the experience. Previously 4.63 crashed everytime I checked a specific folder(debug report logged.) However no crashes yet.! .Also the search function seems quicker and more stable than previously.

I think I can put my new Pegasus to the top of the queue, and enjoy.

Once again congrats David.

Well just to add to previous posting, it seems 4.70 does not like WinXP. Crashed on installation, and unable to connect to imap server.

Anyone else having similar problems on XP?

Did you update a previous version or install alongside with a previous one? And does the previous version install properly?

Hi idw

My original post was made after installing on Win 7. Which for all purposes, is working well. This Win XP installation was made as new, and not an upgrade. Interestingly I can access imap folders with  <50 emails, however accessing Inbox/Sent with large volume, 4.70 crashes. This was the same problem as on 4.63.

Having said that if this issue is XP related, it may not be worth the time, as April 14 is D-Day for XP.......

Does Pegasus hang while attempting to display the content of a folder that contains a large number of messages?  If so, I have this problem on two out of my three Pegasus installs.  One install is portable on a flash drive and exhibits the hangs regardless of the OS it is run on.  The magic number of messages at which the hang occurs is around 200.

Hi bfluet,

I think my highest number was 140 then hangs->crashes. With 4.63 this happened regardless of OS, however 4.70 seems to be behaving on Win 7 laptop.

I've updated to 4.7 and I'm using XP. So far, it's been an absolutely clean updating experience. Totally seamless. Some things have changed but I haven't had to think about anything; just carry on using it the same as before.

Some of my folders are huge as I've been using Pegasus since some time in the nineties and one thing I noticed when I moved a large number of  messages today was that I didn't get the "Need to re-index file" hassle that I've traditionally got when performing such moves. Was I lucky or has this hassle been exterminated?

Continued thanks as always to David Harris.  I've been using Pegasus Mail for 20 years. For the last 5 years i have used it mostly on Linux.

It's too early to post a review of Pegasus Mail v. 4.70 on Linux with wine, but in case other Linux users are wondering whether to upgrade, here's my initial experience:

(1) Everything I have tried so far works. I was concerned that the extensive new code in v. 4.70 might introduce new incompatibilities with wine, but I haven't found any yet.

(2) Encrypted connections to encrypted SMTP servers work using the new functionality within Pegasus Mail. It is no longer necessary to use the stunnel workaround that was required with pmail 4.63 and earlier versions under wine.

(3) I had to uninstall the "ierenderer" add-on to pmail -- it produced errors and crashes in pmail 4.70. This is not a problem, since the HTML rendering in pmail 4.70 is better than "ierenderer" anyway.

You can see (or post) reviews of Pegasus Mail on Linux with "wine" ("Wine Is Not an Emulator") at:

I'm still hoping for a feature I suggested to be added:

But you can't have everything, and this is still the best email client I have tried.
