After pmail version update, can not send email

Thank you all for your replies.

Here's an update. (I am so confused now.)

1_ Pegasus Mail 4.63 is working OK.
2_ Update to pmail 4.70.
3_ Unable to send emails using pmail through my hotmail account. I confirm the settings are not touched by the update procedure. Repeated tests fail.
4_ I am able to access hotmail through web interface and send emails using it.
5_ Back to pmail 4.63.
6_ I am able to send emails using pmail again. Still using the same settings as the initial state.
7_ I start this topic in the Pegasus Mail community forum.
8_ Update again to pmail 4.70.
9_ Before I start playing with the settings, I perform a new test. I can successfully send emails! Still, same settings as the initial state.

I have no clear explanation. I wonder if perhaps I accidentally changed something at some point without even noticing.

I will keep using pmail 4.70, unless something “breaks” again. If the problem arises again, I am certainly going to post new questions here.

I am not sure I would/should say this is really solved.

I am certainly intrigued. If anyone has some idea about what is going on (or what happened), I will be glad to hear it.

In any case, I am thankful for your replies (and for Pegasus Mail).

Thank you,
Ady.

Hello,

I have updated pmail to v.4.70, and now I can't send emails through my hotmail account.

Prior to the update, my hotmail account was correctly configured in pmail and I was sending emails correctly.

I am not a technical user, so I am not sure where (nor what for) to search the forum regarding this issue.

Before updating, I have read the release notes. As I understood, I should be able to keep using pmail as usual. My emails and the configuration appear as they used to (just as before the update). I also rebooted my Vista OS, just in case it was somehow influencing the process.

Before updating, I performed a backup of my pmail directory, just in case, and I still have it available.

Since the release notes mention something about changes / updates about "OpenSSL" (or something of that sort) in the new Pegasus Mail version 4.70, perhaps there is some relation to it(?). Perhaps I need to change/update something in the Windows Firewall?

I would appreciate any tips, links or specific instructions on how to solve this issue / correct my configuration.

TIA,
Ady.

Click on Tools

Click on "Internet Options"

Click on the " Sending SMTP" tab

Click on "edit"

Click on the "Security" tab

check the box that says "Via STARTTLS"

Click the box that says "Enable server certificate fingerprint tracking"

type "asdf" in the box for "Current certificate fingerprint"

check the box that says "Only use SSLv3(needed for Mercury v4.74 and earlier servers"

then click on ok until you are back at main screen

the first time you check your mail it will say
"Potential Security Problem" blah blah blah

just click on "Update and continue"

side note: it's interesting that hotmail uses the same security as the older mercury mail server.

Thank you for your reply.

I had re-installed the prior version of Pegasus Mail, 4.63, so to keep using it.

I'll update again to v.4.70 so to try your suggestions.

In the meantime, I must ask... What happened (in v.4.70) that now these changes are required? Evidently, this is not something hotmail modified, as I am still able to send emails with Pegasus Mail v4.63 without any changes.

And, since we are talking about security, can someone please provide an explanation (or a link to some information) about these particular changes/settings? I mean, I can follow the suggested instructions, but I have no idea what these settings do or why they need to be changed now.

TIA,
Ady.

Pmail has been upgraded, but if the previous poster is correct the upgrade could cause problems with Hotmail, hence the need to adjust your connection settings.

I don't understand what you mean. Hotmail has not changed its requirements. Using (again) the prior pmail version 4.63, I can send emails from pmail through my hotmail account.

One possible reason to have to adjust the settings would be if the pmail update would not keep the prior settings, and instead would "reset" them to some default that would be inadequate for Hotmail. I don't think this is the case, but I could be wrong.

So, again, I'd like to understand what I am doing, before I actually proceed with these changes, specially when they are related to security. If someone could post some explanation or a link for me to read, I'd appreciate it very much.

TIA,

Ady.

Page 138 of the Pegasus Mail manual explains STARTTLS and you can read about other security settings as well. Select the Downloads button next to the Forums button in the blue bar near the top of this page.

Thank you for your reply.

I now have read the section of the manual about STARTTLS. But...

What I don't understand is why I need to change my settings just because pmail is getting an update.

Searching about this matter, and reading the manual, the relevant settings seem to be dependent on the ISP and the email provider. Once I get the appropriate settings working, I should be able to use them in my email client (pmail). Since I was already using them in pmail 4.63, and updating to v4.70 has not changed those settings, then why should I need to change them for pmail 4.70 to work correctly?

I want to be clear; I don't mind changing them. It's just that I don't see the reason why updating the email client should require different settings from those already in use.

Additionally, I was unable to find what "asdf" has to do with hotmail (or what it is at all, for that matter).

To me, it would make some sense if something in the Firewall or the antivirus would need an update (as in allowing the new pmail version executable to communicate), but according to the suggestion in this topic, the Firewall has nothing to do with this issue.

So, please, can someone explain why updating pmail would require to change the settings that should only depend on ISP and/or email provider (specially when current settings used to work correctly with the prior version of pmail)?

TIA,

Ady.

Presumably you are using some form of security and have selected STARTTLS or SSL/TLS in your server settings.

The underlying architecture in these has been updated and the update (apparently) is not compatible with Hotmail.

Hence the need for a legacy setting.
