Zip attachment crashes 4.70

[quote user="jonm"]I can say a bit more. The issue is with 4.6.3 as well but 4.6.3 doesn't fail (but it does think some zips are text files and displays them, it just displays them as text).

I've forwarded your info to David Harris, thanks!

I have upgraded my 32bit Windows XP and 64 bit Windows7  PCs to 4.70. For many years I have opened or saved zip attachments with Pegasus (sometimes over 25Meg).

Now I discover that opening or saving an 11Meg zip attachment crashes Pegasus. It goes into100% cpu and never does anything (I gave up after 20 minutes on both PCs).

I have searched for zip in this forum and looked at all 183 results so if I have missed it please point me to the right topic.

Is this a (already downloaded) local message or do you access it via IMAP?

idw,

Thanks for reply.

Downloaded from a POP3 server both times.

As an aside have discovered I cannot reply using IE11 (cannot get text into reply box)

I assume this refers to this forum? Anyway, it's very unlikely that Pegasus Mail is causing the crash (since you're the very first one reporting it). Please read the crash post and try catching a crash dump as suggested by the third item. Since what you see is rather a hang/freeze you will need to run PMDebug Snapshot from the Start menu group installed along with the MiniDump tool (so please allow the group to be created) while Pegasus Mail stays unresponsive.

Have installed and run the minidump and it says it attached but when I restart Pegasus I have no autosaved emails. The minidump.fff looks ok to me.

Did you do the snapshot as advised? If so, did you see a progress dialog? And did you get the following one as the final dialog?

Michael,

I did not get the snapshot screen.

Reading the readme I assumed I just used task manager to kill Pegasus. I tried killing Pegasus and the debugger but got nothing either way. I also do not see the two additional options in the readme. The only start menu option I have is for the debugger. I should have said that in previous reply, sorry.

Quoted from my previous post:

"... you will need to run PMDebug Snapshot from the Start menu group installed along with the MiniDump tool (so please allow the group to be created) while Pegasus Mail stays unresponsive"

I don't know what exactly you mean by for the debugger, but if it contains an entry named

PMDebug Snapshot you're right there: Please use it as advised, otherwise we won't get any further.

The only option I have from the start menu is "Pegasus Mail Debugger". I have now installed on Windows XP and I get lots of options.

I guess there is an issue with installing on Windows 7 64bit, I only get a link to start the exe (no uninstall, snapshot, readme etc).

Now I know what the snapshot is I ran it manually and get the dialog. I sent the email (with the info) to the beta email address. Should I send it somewhere else as well?

Weird: I'm running it on Win7/64 as well and all entries are created.

No, thanks, I'll take a look.

I am specifically running an 8 core AMD cpu on mirrored drives but don't know if that could explain it. The dialogues for install were the same on XP and Windows 7 except for the UAC splash at start of install. Tried installing as administrator but it makes no difference.

Well, not quite unexpected there's nothing unusual in the dump you submitted, so I really wonder what's going on. Is this the only message you're seeing this issue with? Can you duplicate it with any (very) large ZIP attachment?

Yes, I tried with a 210MB zip and same results. I have a test XP machine which had PM4.6.3 on it and that handles the 11MB and 210MB zip files with no problem. I upgrade to 4.70 and it goes into 100% cpu when I try to save or open either of the zips.

I think the problem is that PM 4.70 thinks zip files are text files and it is trying to display the text before I can save or open the zip. This seems to be verified by looking at the attachments for a smaller zip and after about 10 minutes the text of the zip is displayed and I can open or save. However when I look at file extensions in content viewer zip isn't there and adding it changes nothing (I have tried most of the options). PM still thinks it is a text file.

Is there a way of telling 4.70 not to try and display zip files?

Found it, I was looking in wrong place. that has fixed it.

but I would like  to preview other attachments and I can see no way to do that.

What exactly did you do, just for the records and everybody else to know?

BTW: The dump you sent showed exactly what you assumed Pegasus Mail was doing - I only couldn't believe it really tried opening and displaying a ZIP file ...

Tools->Options->Incoming Mail->Message Reader

then tick the Turn attachment preview off by default in the attachment view.

I found it by googling as I was trying to do it in Content Views.

I think it is a bug that PM hangs forever on large attachments though and there is no way of cleanly recovering.

FYI: I tried a lot of zip files and some 13 meg ones it could open. There seems to be an exponential time as well as at 8meg it took about 10 minutes and 11 meg still hadn't displayed after 30.
