Naming Conventions in Distribution Lists

Hi Olaf,

Thanks for this straight-forward no-nonsense reply. It is rarely found. This answer is clear and - as far as I know - complete.

Thanks again!

Hi Olaf,

Thanks for this straight-forward no-nonsense reply. It is rarely found. This answer is clear and - as far as I know - complete.

Thanks again! Pega

Hi to all,

In my blacklist (black.pml) I found 4 different naming conventions:

 1. FancyName <name@domain.com>
 2. "Fancy Name" <name@domain.com>
 3. name@domain.com
 4. <name@domain.com>

In the manual I cannot find anything about address naming conventions, except it mentions the last one as a real mailaddress (ie. name@domain.com between angle brackets).

 • Are they all acceptable (they doesn't crash the list, but do they work)?
 • Are there differences between the conventions?
 • Since they were automatically added to the blacklist, why are they different?
 • How can I check if there are same addresses or same domains?

I'm looking forward to the answers.
Thanks. Pega

Hi to all,

In my blacklist (black.pml) I found 4 different naming conventions:

FancyName <name@domain.com>

"Fancy Name" <name@domain.com>

name@domain.com

<name@domain.com>

In the manual I cannot find anything about address naming conventions, except it mentions the last one as a real mailaddress (ie. name@domain.com between angle brackets).

Are they all acceptable (they doesn't crash the list, but do they work)?

Are there differences between the conventions?

Since they were automatically added to the blacklist, why are they different?

How can I check if there are same addresses or same domains?

I'm looking forward to the answers. Yes

> Are there differences between the conventions?

No ... the difference in the entries is relevant while using blacklist ...

> Since they were automatically added to the blacklist, why are they different?

... because Pegasus will do a substring search for the complete string in the blacklist. So - i.e. the first entry will match only, if FancyName will not change. Realy needed is only the third convetion which will match too the missing fifth convention:

5. name@domain.com (Fancy Name)

What happenend there may be, that Pegasus first found the first entry. Than found one from same mailaddress but with blank in Fancy Name (which is a different string from first one), than one without any fancyname and so on.

> How can I check if there are same addresses or same domains?

CTRL-F (find) will do in distributionlists (blacklist in Pegasus at least is a distributionlist) ...

bye Olaf
