now I am getting a "smtp" warning...first I set the outgoing up as smtp.Verizon.net, then I tried outgoing.Verizon.net...with both I cannot send out files...those are both of the settings that Verizon has used...I am stumped

If you are using v4.70 go to the Security tab of the SMTP host configuration.  Toggle the setting "Only use SSLv3..." then test.  This is a trial and error setting depending on the SSL being used by the SMTP server you are connecting to.  I believe Verizon needs this setting disabled but am not sure that all Verizon servers do yet.

Also in the Security tab (at the bottom) is a setting about using CRAM-MD5 authentication.  That setting needs to be enabled.

You might want to search the forum for Verizon.  There are a number of discussions on the subject.
