PMail under Wine
Hope that helps things along
I certainly doesn't help the OP with the install crashing ... and I don't know a cure either: WINE issues have to be reported to the WINE developers since they even told me not to implement any IER workarounds which might have helped.

Within the past year my own, not my wife's, computer finally died of a motherboard failure, and I decided to go Linux and ended up with UBuntu.  Sadly it did not run under Wine?  Are there any workarounds, as I regard PMail as superior to Thunderbird by a long chalk.

Maybe you could be more precise about: it doesn't run in wine. I run Pmail for several years now with different versions in wine and have no issue. Just now, changing to 4.7 I have a problem.

I don't use Ubuntu, but Puppy Linux.

 # wine --version
wine-1.7.29

Thanks. It crashes on install, no way back. What sort of details do you need to help further?

It would be useful if you could provide us with your Pegasus Mail configuration. In Pegasus Mail menues click Help/About, then click the Info button. Select and copy the displayed information. Then paste into a reply to this thread.

Can't give you a configuration when it crashes on install, either immediately or freezes thereafter (after the latest Ubuntu upgrade).

I have working Pmail under Wine, but I must to manually patch wine sources.

The Wine bug note you refer to, points to IE processing having problems. I would suggest you try to run your copy of Pegasus Mail using Bearhtml as the browser display engine, as it does not use IE.  You need to close all windows in Pegasus Mail, then go to the IERenderer icon on your toolbar, click it and uncheck the "Use IERenderer".  Then restart Pegasus Mail, it will pick up the Bearhtml.dll automatically.

If that works you have two choices. Continue using Bearhtml as your display engine, or look into and report the version of IERenderer.dll you are using, as well as the version of IE    It may be that all you need is a refresh of the IERenderer display engine (once again click the IERenderer icon on your toolbar and click the "About..." button. The version of IERenderer is shown. Also on this display is a link to the latest version of IERenderer.

Hope that helps things along
