Cannot send mail- SMTP error message

Thank you Caisson and Bfluet.... I got the issue resolved. I reinstalled Pegasus on the Windows 8 machine again and did the set up using the same POP and SMTP settings and it worked.

I believe it was an installation issue. Cant say for sure but something to do with the fact that there was no "Pmail admin" installed this time. There seem to be some "rights" issue. It could also be some corrupt files during installation.

Thanks.

I just got a new Windows 8 computer and tried to set up Pegasus Mail. POP3 went well and I can receive mail however, I get an error message for outgoing mail' You do not have an active SMPT definition for sending mail via the internet, so no action was taken|". Any help please?

Thanks.

Did you create an SMTP host (outgoing mail server) in the Sending (SMTP) tab of Tools > Internet Options?

Did you create an SMTP host (outgoing mail server) in the Sending (SMTP) tab of Tools > Internet Options?

Yes I did.

I have a Gmail so I did the following:

Under the general tab, I entered;

Gmail

smpt.gmail.com

username:xxxxx

password:xxxxxx

Port: 465

Timeout: 180 mins

Under security I have;

SSL connect

Log into SMPT server using the following details (username and password)

In the Security (SMTP) tab do you have the Gmail host selected and enabled in the "Send mail using these SMTP hosts" section?

The internet options settings are identity specific so if you use multiple identities l make sure an SMTP host has been specified for each one.

Is Pegasus Mail installed in the default location of C:\PMAIL with the program in C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS and the mailbox directories in C:\PMAIL\MAIL?

Yes the Gmail host is selected. I only have one SMTP host.

I only see Pegasus Mail is installed in ‪C:\PMAIL.

I am at a loss as to what the problem is. The POP3 and SMTP host definitions are stored in .PND files (POP?????.PND and SMT?????.PND) in the home mailbox directory. The reference to these files in contained in the PMAIL.INI file also located in the home mailbox directory. You might take a look inside the PMAIL.INI file to see what the "SMTP definition" entry looks like. There will be multiple entries if you have multiple hosts or multiple identities. I suggest making a copy in the .INI file then opening the copy with a text editor (notepad?) and using the find function to view all occurances of "smtp".

Another thought (grasping at straws here), perhaps a munged .PND file is causing the problem. I would disable the current host selection and then create and enable a new one with the same settings. Test to see if it gets you past the error message.

Is it possible for me to send you a couple screen shots of the set-up?

Is it possible for me to send you a couple screen shots of the set-up?

Hello:

As per your last post and email, I found the following info.

I didn't bother to send you the screen shots and I am pretty sure that I entered the correct SMTP info. I installed Pegasus a few times in the past and it always worked. This time I have a Windows 8 computer and not sure it that's the problem.

I wasn't quite sure if I did exactly what you suggested but I am thinking that there is an installation problem with a file/folder in Pegasus.

Here is what I found.

With Gmail your username is normally the first part (before the @) of your Gmail address.

rrwittoc,

Are you still receiving the error message about not having an active SMTP definition or are you just unable to authenticate to the gmail smtp server.

rrwittoc,

Are you still receiving the error message about not having an active SMTP definition or are you just unable to authenticate to the gmail smtp server.

I tried the username with and without the "@" but no luck.

I also installed Pegasus on a Windows computer and still getting the same error message.

Sorry, my mistake. I did not read all the thread.

The username isn't the issue. As Brian as already said your best bet is to disable or delete the SMTP definition and then reset it.

I did notice that you transposed the T an P in SMTP in one of your posts.

Make sure that the server name is correctly entered.

If after you reset it and the server responds, the username might become relevant.

Hello:

I corrected the transposed T and P in SMTP.

I installed Pegasus on a different machine with Windows 7 and is still getting the error message.

I thought it was resolved last night and transferred all my mails, folders etc... in the new machine but tried to send a msg again after and no luck.

I deleted Pegasus from the original machine with windows 8 and could try a fresh install of Pegasus.

I want to get it right this time, in terms of the correct directory, the admin issue, setting up POP and SMTP.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

If you are saying that it worked before you transferred mailbox content but did not work after you transferred the content then I suspect you overwrote a configuration file which is what broke it.

Have you seen the whitepaper about files to copy to a new system? If not, find it here: http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/whitepapers/entry41852.aspx

Note: The whitepaper document was created prior to Pegasus Mail v4.70 but is still pertinent except for the reference to the USRDICT3.PMD dictionary file. In v4.70 that file is USRDICT5.PMD.

Just a thought.

When you open Tools | Internet options | Sending, you should see the name you gave to your SMTP definition.

This should occupy the topmost position in the box. If it doesn't use the arrows to move it into the top position.
