4.70 sending endless copies of an email

I dont know why you are blaming Gmail for this, Im using a completely different SMTP server and having the same problem. The servers are accepting post most of the time. Its only when we use this copy and paste that things go wrong. Gmail is not closing the connection, true but the likely cause to my mind is that Pmail isnt terminating its part as it should. The copy and paste has knocked something out of kilter.

After the November round of Microsoft patches, my Pegasus 4.70 on 64 bit Windows 7 has taken to occasionally sending a email endlessly until I manually remove it from the queued mail. I have tried reinstalling, but the problem has recurred. I am using Gmail SMPT as my outgoing server. Of course, the patches are not necessarily the problem. I've been running 4.7 for at least six months without problems and older versions for many years.

Suggestions, comments?

Are multiple copies actually being sent or are there multiple attempts to send?

It sent one hundred and something copies the first time. I don't know how many the second.

This is not something I have seen reported in the past.

Logic suggests that Pmail does not regard the message as being sent and therefore repeats the process.

You could look at the transmission logs to see if they show something extraordinary.

In Tools | Internet options, check Create internet session logs, but read the Help files before doing so.

This will tell you the format of the logs and where to find them.

If something looks strange you can post the log here, but delete your Username and Password before doing so.

Be aware also that these might be (Base64) encoded and not immediately obvious.

Thanks I'll try to do that, but it might take a little while.

Here is the first set of logs. Now I'll set up the internet sessions logs. Yea, I should have done that first, sorry.

I have found how to reproduce the problem.

First, cut and paste something from Windows Explorer containing pictures into an email.

When sent, the Gmail server will incorrectly close the connection, but accept the email and send it.

Pmail will try again, and again....

This is from the smtp log

11:31:02.949: >> 221 2.0.0 closing connection z5sm1931914pbt.89 - gsmtp<cr><lf>
11:31:02.959: [!] Warning: SSL connection improperly closed by remote host.

It would appear the problem is with the Google server.

If you guys can reproduce the problem had smack Google to notice, they might, possibly fix the problem. Then again, they are infamous for breaking things with very strict interpretations of the RFC's.

This is the problem I am also having. I dont use Gmail to send mail. As mentioned above it happens when I copy and paste into Pmail. In my case it is when I copy and paste a web page. I have to do this a lot because I have a friend who lives in a remote area and can only receive e-mail, not view the web. Normally, I use the mapipm (I think its called) and Internet Explorer 8 but sometimes that doesnt give a satisfactory result, so I do copy and paste. This is a fairly reproducible problem. If I remember to do so, I will watch after sending to see whether the mail item is cancelled from the queue after sending. But sometimes I forget and my poor friend gets dozens of copies. I am using 4.70 with XP, but Im fairly sure this problem occurred in the previous Pmail version.

I am new to this forum and I was on the point of reporting this bug, when I saw this thread.

I would suggest to save the web pages as MHT resp. MHTML file and send them as attachments. Depending on the browser you use you (and the recipient) might need a browser add-on for doing so, for Firefox there is one called Mozilla Archive Format, e.g.. IE on the other hand can read and write such files by default.

I use Firefox for most things, but some sites, like Yahoo don't currently work well with Firefox. My solution to the problem, for the moment, is to just delete the pictures.

It IS annoying though. It would be nice if somebody could get Google and any others causing this problem to fix it.

My solution to the problem, for the moment, is to just delete the pictures.</p><p>It IS annoying though. It would be nice if somebody could get Google and any others causing this problem to fix it. </p>

My problem with this is that I have no way of intervening in the way by recipients computer is set up and she has no ability with computers at all, many people dont, other than being able to type very quickly into them. Additionally theres no-one with any of the necessary skills around to help her. So the situation is somewhat precarious. So I use the strategy of doing what has worked before. I dont like IE but keep it because it is the only browser, I know that has the facility to pipe a copy of a webpage directly to a mailer (In Pmails case using mapipm). Thanks for the tip about Firefox. One more thing to look into.
