problem with Pegasus Pmail default screen

I suggest starting a new thread beginning with an explanation of how the same messages are getting on the different machines. Are you sharing a mailbox? Is each machine downloading the same messages?

Also... Is IERenderer enabled? Are you running the same version of IERenderer on both machines?

Finally, explain what happens when a message that doesn't appear in the preview pane is double clicked. Does it open in a reader window?

FWIW, when a message won't display or an attachment won't open, the first thing to try is a restart of the PC.

I have 2 Windows computers, one will be called W7 using Pegasus v4.63; the other will be called W8. It uses Pegasus v4.70.

W8 works fine. W7 used to present the usual default screen (horizontal toolbar and ribbon across the top, a vertical list of stored Email folders on the left, a window to its right shows a listing of non-saved Emails and below this a preview of a highlighted Email).

After some fiddling around I made some mistakes causing a single panel screen display of 5 columns. The first is an unnamed column of folder icons, the second a vertical column named 'From', a third column named 'Subject', A fourth column named 'Date/Time' and a fifth column named 'Size'.

I need help in correcting the errors I must have made. I need to get back to the default Pmail layout in W7.

Please check if you have more windows opened behind this window (main menu: Window). Make windows smaller if necessary. If you can't find more windows, you apparently closed the Folders window. You can open folders window again pressing Ctrl+L or a special button found in main toolbar. Then, you can switch between classic view

and 3-panel view

(press "List" or "Preview" button in folders window).

When in 'Preview' mode, the bars that divide the folder list, message list, and preview panes are moveable. What you describe sounds like the vertical divider bar that creates the folder list pane has been dragged fully left so that the folder list is no longer visible. If the preview pane is not visible either then the horizontal bar that divides the message list pane and the preview pane may be dragged all the way down.

If you are unable to get it back the way you want then close Pegasus Mail, use Windows Explorer (My Computer) to navigate to the mailbox directory, then rename the STATE.PMJ file to something like STATE_PMJ.renamed. When you next start Pegasus Mail a new STATE.PMJ will be created and Pegasus Mail will start in Preview mode with the default pane sizes. You can delete the renamed STATE.PMJ file once you know you won't need to restore it.

Hi Lauri. Unfortunately your suggestion did not work.

Would a good and safe thing be to install a new copy of V4.63 on top of my existing version of Pegasus? I would make a copy of the MAIL folder first.and set it aside for safety reasons.

It is extremely doubtful that an install of v4.63 will help because most of the configuration files are stored in the mailbox directories which are reused by the new install. Besides, no changes were made in v4.70 that I am aware of that would affect what you describe.

The only way a new install is helpful is if you remove the entire \MAIL directory from the picture. The installation process will create a new one to which you can copy data from the old mailbox directories to the new ones. It is important not to overwrite any configuration files if going this route which I don't think is necessary, yet.

Regarding your problem, I said earlier that what you describe sounds like the message list pane of Preview mode but it also sounds like an open folder window. What is displayed in the title bar of that window?

What happens when you click the Folders icon in the toolbar or do Ctrl+L?

Finally, at the bottom right of the main Pegasus Mail window is a blue triangle. When it is pointing down, a bar of open folder window names is displayed along the bottom of the main window. Clicking the blue triangle toggles that bar on/off. If that bar shows more open windows than you can see then one may be opened off screen. Click the Window pull down menu then select either tile or cascade. This tiles or cascades all open Pegasus Mail windows making them visible and accessible to manipulate.

Sounds very much like an open folder in list view.

You should be able to close it and then select preview mode from the toolbar.

If the toolbar is not visible click on the folder icon to open it.

Thanks for the help. So far I've been able to reconstruct almost the full PMAIL screen, but only with floating panels. One panel is for the vertical stored message folders amd the other (usually horizontal) is for new mail. There is a blank rectangular space below for showing a message either from the stored mail folder or the new mail list.

What is missing is the button band starting with the writing instrument icon on the left and ending with the IE Renderer button. Sometimes only some header info shows up but no message. Sometimes the message does get shown (when clicking a message in a folder or new mail). I believe the message data is actually still present in the MAIL folder, but not being accessed. The Size of the MAIL folder is about the same as before the problems occured (about 1.0 GB).

Check this setting:

In Tools > Options > User interface > Toolbars > When open show the main window toolbar as...

Make sure the "A fixed toolbar under the menu" option is selected.

Check this setting:

In Tools > Options > User interface > Toolbars > When open show the main window toolbar as...

Make sure the "A fixed toolbar under the menu" option is selected.

I've now gotten the log-on screen display to show what it normally should except for the following: The top bar of the drop-down tools menu (starts with 'File' and ends with 'Help' and has only 7 items. This is on my Windows 7 computer running Pegasus v4.63, the one I have been trying to fix.

My other computer (Windows 8.1, running Pegasus v4.7) has nine items. The first on the left (before 'File') has a tiny picture that I can not understand. Clicking it has a drop-down menu starting with 'Restore', as I recall. I clicked it to see what happens and the vertical address list and horizontal new mail list both detached from each other and the bottom of the button bar and became floating. The tiny picture in the menu bar also disappeared. I could not find a way to restore the default settings. The second item missing on the Windows 7 computer menu is 'Messages'.

It seems that I have changed Pegasus on my Windows 8.1 computer to be much like the Windows 7 computer for Pegasus. In both computers The setting in Tools>Options>User Interface>Toolbars, 'A Fixed toolbar under the menu' is activated. I think that this causes the button bar to be fixed to the bottom of the main menu. I need a way to attach the folder file and new message list to each other and the bottom of the button bar in each computer.

Is there any way to reverse an action such I made when clicking 'Restore'?

Your window options are List mode or Preview mode. Preview mode is one window containing three panes, the folder list pane on the left, the message list pane on the top right, and the message preview pane on the bottom right. List mode is one folder list menu. In either mode you can have additional windows open. Whether they open in subsequent sessions is controlled by the 'save desktop state' setting. All windows can be dragged to wherever you want them and resized to whatever size you want. Whether the position and size stick for subsequent sessions is also controlled by the 'save desktop state' setting. You should be able to look at the one on Win8 and see whether it is running in Preview or List mode. Run in the same mode on the Win7 machine then open, size, and position any windows to match the Win8 machine. Keep in mind that different screen resolutions and aspect rations may prevent an exact match. Also keep in mind that most configuration settings are identity specific.

That little picture that you reference the opens a list starting with "Restore" is an image of the flying horse and is the main window heading when Pegasus Mail is maximized. Be aware that saving the desktop state is problematic when attempted while Pegasus Mail is maximized. I suggest always running Pegasus Mail windowed. Stretch it to full screen rather than maximizing the window if you want it to fill the screen.

That "Restore" setting you mentioned has nothing to do with Pegasus Mail. That is a Windows command relevant to the main window itself. In Pegasus, I don't know of a way to restore a setting, window position, or window size change. Of course if the 'save desktop state' setting is not enabled then window manipulations will not be saved.

Thanks for the help and info. Pegasus 4.7 in my Windows 8 computer is and was set for Preview. I don't know what I did, but the floating panels of saved folders and new mail became locked together again. All is OK there.

re Pegasus 4.63 in my Windows 7 computer, it still has problems. In the main Menu There is no Folders item, only a folder item that had no listing of preview mode, so I could not tell if it was in preview mode or not. In experimenting I think I might have deleted my Saved folders panel. I can't find it. What can I do?

The 'Folder' menu item is a dynamic menu item meaning it is only visible when the Folder window is active. The easiest way to tell whether you are in List mode or Preview mode is to open the Folder window and look at its toolbar. If it is in List mode the toolbar will contain a "Preview" icon and if in Preview mode you will see a "List" icon. If your icons do not contain words then the tooltips have been

disabled. Those settings are in Tools > Options > User interface

> Toolbars.

As for your statement "I think I might have deleted my Saved folders panel", I don't know what that means. Are you saying that your folder list is empty? Maybe when in Preview mode your folder list panel is not visible? Perhaps you had a folder named "Saved" that is missing? Please clarify.

May I suggest to post a screen shot (using Alt + Print keys for the active window) via the forum editor's "Options" tab? Please note that you have to compress JPEG images down to 64 KB when doing so which can be done using (free) tools like "Irfanview", e.g..

Crtl+L opens the folder list window. The corresponding icon is the third one from the left (looks like several yellow paper folders). The tooltip says "work with your mail folders" when you hover over the icon.

This is very obvious and has been mentioned before so I still suspect that the folder list window is opening out of view. Diagnosing and resolving this was explained in one of my previous responses so please review that and advise if you have ruled it out.

Thank you. It didn't sink in when you said Ctrl-L will open the folders file. It worked very well.

The Pegasus 4.70/Win8 computer has a dropdown menu called 'Messages' showing 20 items and a dropdown Folder menu called 'Folders' showing Preview mode with a checkmark (no tooltips). It is working fine.

Pegasus 3.63/Win7 has no dropdown menu titled 'Messages'. It has a dropdown menu item called 'Folder' (note no plural on 'Folder'), the contents of which has 22 items. Twenty of them seem to be the same as the 20 in the 'Messages' folder in the Pegasus 4.70/8 computer. I cannot find an item in the Pegasus 3.62/Win7 computer main bar that indicates how to choose 'Preview' to stitch the Main screen, Folder file and New Mail Panes together.

I think the Pegasus 3.63/Win7 computer is running in the 'List' mode. How can I change this to the 'Preview' Mode? Now the 'Folders' and 'New Mail' are nicely placed on the main space.

If you have managed to open the folders you should have also the folders toolbar showing List?Preview modes.

As requested by IDW post a screenshot of the problem machine. A picture is worth a thousand words.

The toolbar of the Folder window contains a List/Preview icon. It may not be visible if the Folder window is too narrow in which case you will see a green arrow which will display the rest of the toolbar.

Also, there are two different menu items: "Folder" and "Folders"; that occupy the position place in the menu bar. They serve different purposes and appear under different circumstances. The menu item "Folder" changes to "Folders" when the Folder window is active. This is the dynamic menu that I mentioned earlier. Try it for yourself. Activate the New mail window (or any other window except the Folder window) and you will see that it says "Folder". Check out its content. Now activate the Folder window. You will see the menu item now reads "Folders". You will also see that its content is different.
