Some new mail not displaying

I know nothing of Linux of VMs but take a look at the contents of the Info button located in Help > About Pegasus Mail...  The paths to the WINPMAIL.EXE, Home, and New mailbox directories might provide a clue into what is going on.

Things to be aware of...

  • Configuration files are stored inside the mailbox directories.
  • Many configuration files contains paths.
  • A copy of a Pegasus Mail installation from machine to machine will only work if the paths to the executables and the mailbox directories are identical on both machines (can not be anywhere inside of \PROGRAM FILES on Win7 or later).
  • If the new install will be in a different path then you must bring over only data from the old mailbox directories

Following a motherboard failure, I've been using Pegasus via a laptop with the drive from the old machine plugged in via USB.

I've now got everything running again as a VM on Linux MINT and transferred the complete Pmail folder across from the old drive to a shared folder on the new machine: I'm now running Pegasus from the VM, pointed at the shared folder.

All of which is fine - it loads, everything works and everything seems to be just as it was - except - that the last week's mail (in and out) isn't visible.  It's there all right - I can see the CNM's (and there were only a couple of outgoing messages anyway) but for reasons unknown half a dozen recent CNM's are not visible in the New Mail window. I've been using the old disc connected to the laptop for about a month and most of the mail has come over - just the last week not!

I must have transferred Pmail from one machine to another at least a couple of dozen times over the years - but I've never seen this happen before!  Since it was a *complete* transfer of the whole PMAIL folder any parameters stored therein will have gone over unchanged - so is there now some other file somewhere else that needs moving as well?  I should add that Pmail was running in an extended partition, not on the root partition on the old machine and as far as I know there wasn't anything elsewhere.  It was also shut down when I unplugged the disc from the laptop and switched it over to the new machine.

Its a long way from a disaster - more a minor annoyance - I've now reattached the old drive to the laptop and - behold - the missing messages were there - so I've forwarded them to myself and they have arrived on the new setup.

BUT - I'd like to know what actually caused this - it could be a problem in the future, so its a good idea to find out how to avoid it now if possible!

Hmmm - having just read the posts on moving files and folders, it looks as though things aren't as simple as I thought!  Further - the MAIL folder *within* the VM seems to be the one where incoming mail is getting stored, not the one in the shared folder outside - even though I'm running pmail in the outside folder...

Pegasus experienced I may - have been - but it looks like I've got some relearning to do!

Any pointers from anyone who has done something similar would be very welcome: I definitely want to keep mail and configuration files *outside* the VM, so that recovery is easier if the VM dies - and I also want to know exactly what to back up externally from wherever the mail and configuration files reside on this machine.
