Cannot Add User

The files in the "Do not overwrite" section of the white paper do not exist yet because the newly created user has not been configured yet in Peg.  They will be created when you configure the new user.  I do not understand why they were not in the mailbox directory that you copied unless you were running with different Home and New mailbox locations.

Best thing to do is to configure the new user then copy into the new mailbox directory only files as listed in the white paper.  If the copied mailbox directory contains a pmail.ini file consider using it as a guide during configuration.

The ONLY condition under which it is ok to copy an entire mailbox directory from one machine to another is if the paths to both the executables and the mailbox directories is identical on both machines.  Otherwise the invalid paths in the configuration files make Peg non-functional and difficult to troubleshoot.  I also believe that if an installation has been through multiple upgrades then at some point it is worth starting fresh with a clean install and just copying over data.  This insures clean config files and no "ghosts" from previous installs.

I am having trouble adding a user to Pegasus Mail.   Pmail v4.7, Windows 7 Pro

I have added another user's subdirectory from another system in Windows,  C\PMAIL\MAIL\Linda15B

What I have done:  With Pegasus Mail open, clicked on Addresses > User Management.  The Pegasus Mail Users small window pops  up, showing Mailbox Directory as C\PMAIL\MAIL as expected.

I clicked on New... and the small User details window popped up.  I entered Linda15B in the username box and her personal name in that box.  I tried
a number of combinations of checking/unchecking the Administrator privileges and copy default mail messages boxes, and in all four combinations was rewarded with a "ding" from the computer and no new currently defined user.

What have I done wrong, and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

The Old Guy

If you have already created the directory C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Linda15B then my guess is that the ding is because Pegasus Mail is trying to create a directory that already exists.  Try renaming C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Linda15B to C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Linda15B_renamed then try the add user function again.

You say "I have added another user's subdirectory from another system in Windows,
C\PMAIL\MAIL\Linda15B." but I can't tell if that means you manually created the directory or you copied a directory for another install of Pegasus Mail.  If you copied, be aware that you can only do that under very specific conditions.  Post back if that is the case and you are not familiar with the specifics.

Thanks, Brian.  I did copy the user's directory from another system onto a memory stick, and from there to my C:\PMAIL\MAIL directory.

I will start over by renaming the new Linda15B directory as you recommend, then open Pegasus Mail and create the new user account (with  "Copy default mail messages" checked), then close Pegasus Mail. Done -- and you were correct.  Once Linda15B directory was renamed the new one was created without a problem,

I was not familiar with the specifics you mentioned so went looking around a little more and found your White Paper.  One thing there which is not clear to me is the "Do not overwrite the following configuration files:" section.  These files do exist on the renamed directory I brought over from the other computer, but the only file in the newly created directory is a single .CNM file.  Will Pegasus Mail create the "do not overwrite" files in the new directory after I copy over the specific files in the lists above?  Is there anything I need to do with any of them manually?

Thanks again,
