Pegasus Mail creates a new file for folder data when compacting folders for freeing disk space. After doing so it tries to copy the data back to the previous folder file. If it can't do so there might be another file with some temporary name containing the compacted folder data, but I have no idea whether it's created, in the mailbox or the TEMP directory, e.g..
