Postmaster Account

Rather than confuse the OP the answer is that you can either configure a new mailbox(User) account or use an existing one.

Hi:

We are using Mercury/32 v4.74 on a Windows server.  I created a local account called Postmaster.  I have noticed that we are getting the following error message:

Error getting mailbox information for postmaster

Is it possible to redirect anything being sent to Postmaster to another account?

Thanks,

Nancy

It's probably easiest not to create a separate account called postmaster.  Go to Configuration / Mercury core module, and on the General tab put in the name of a local user who will then get all messages sent to "postmaster".  The help gives you advice about avoiding using an external email address as postmaster.

Do I need to create a mailbox for that local account?

Do I need to create a mailbox for that local account?

From the Help files:

Username of postmaster
Every system capable of receiving Internet mail must have a user called postmaster to whom problem and status reports are sent. The postmaster account is usually an alias to a real user on your system, and this is the expectation within Mercury. Enter in this field the username of the user on the machine where Mercury is running who is to act as your postmaster. While it is permissible to have a non-local address as your postmaster address, we strongly recommend you do not do this, since it can create real problems and mail loops when the remote machine is unreachable. This setting is mandatory - Mercury cannot run properly without it.

Yes, you do. I have a local account called admin. I have told Mercury, via the Mercury Core Module as described above by PaulW that the postmaster account is named admin.

When anyone sends messages to postmaster@... they are delivered to the admin mailbox.

We maintain no separate mailbox for a user acting as postmaster. Instead of this we have added the e-mail address of an already existing local user to the Core Module Configuration. This local user is acting as postmaster and receives all the error and warning messages additionally to its normal emails.

That is the logical scenario.

Nonetheless there has to be a default.

The email address of the already existing user will be the mailbox for the postmaster account. Therefore, you do have a separate mailbox that acts as the postmaster as you have defined that in the Mercury Core Module.

From what I know, a postmaster is a local user, whether there is a dedicated mailbox (user) as postmaster or just one of the local users doesn't make a difference.

I created a dedicated mailbox for the postmaster in which I created a forward file to a local user.  This provides me with a record of all postmaster received messages without the local user (me) having to do anything more than review the message, react if appropriate, then delete the message.  This setup requires the periodic opening of the postmaster mailbox to clear out the new mail folder (something I am very bad at remembering to do).
