Copy to self problem

Did you check to make sure the "copy to self:" option is not set to off in the Tools/Options/Outgoing mail/Messages and replies setup window?

The copy to self box has become greyed out and no longer save my messages to the selected file. Any ideas? I have tried using an alternative folder for such copies but it won't save copies there either.

I do not know where to begin since I have never encountered a "greyed out" folder.

Can you open the Copy to self folder?

Can you obtain the filename of the Copy to self folder from the folder information (right click on the folder name and select 'Folder information')?

Is it possible that the Copy to self folder reached the 2GB file size limit?

There are a number of threads on this community about problems with the Copy to self folder.  Have you done a search and reviewed those threads for hints?  Maybe something you read in one of those will provide a clue that we can pursue.

The folder appears to be empty as any messages are moved to other folders after sending. I try to reindex the file but get a message saying I cannot do this while the file is open, yet I need to select it to use the right button for the reindex option!   I am asking on behalf of a less 'computerate' friend and will be logging on to his computer via Teamviewer to try to sort him out.

I have now installed a new copy of Pmail and copied his folders to it. This seems to have sorted the problem for now.

Here is what I suggest...

With Pegasus Mail closed, use a file manager to look into the mailbox directory for files named COPYSELF.PMM and COPYSELF.PMI.  If the are there move them to a location outside of the mailbox directory.  Now copy the same named files from the \Pmail\Programs\Defaults directory to the mailbox directory.  This restores the default Copies to self folder files.  Start Pegasus Mail and select this folder as the default copies to self folder (Tools > Options > Outgoing mail > Copies to self).

If you do not find the files mentioned above then we may need more help because just copying in the default files will result in two folders being named "Copies to self" which is a bad thing.  We have to figure out a way to identify the .PMM/.PMI file pair associated with the bad copies to self folder.  Post back if this is the case and we'll see if we can get suggestions from other community members on how to proceed.

Finally, you mentioned that creating an alternate folder for copies to self did not work which has me wondering whether there is an autofilter in place that is diverting all copies to self messages to a different folder.

Thanks. I do indeed now have two Copies to self folders plus a couple I added to try and divert the copies.

Other than searching through all the PMI and PMM folders - he has lots! - is there any quicker way to find and delete the now redundant ones?

There are no filter rules anywhere which might have caused the problem. We tried CC to himself as a stop gap, but it does not seem to like sending messages to the same address as the sender.

As a stop gap, create a folder with a completely unique name (like "My Copies" if one doesn't already exist).  Now set that as the default Copies to self folder and see if it works.

If it does, copy any messages in the visible copies to self folders to the newly created one then delete the empty folder.  Once done, restart Pegasus because you may see more.  A side affect of duplicate folder names is that Pegasus may not be able to display them in the folder list.  The restart will regenerate the folder list potentially displaying some that were not visible before.

Hopefully this process will allow you to remove all of the copies to self folders.

As a final check, make a copy of the HIERARCH.PM file, open it with a text editor and look for any entries that contain "copies to self", "copyself", or similar (ignore the 'My Copies' one created earlier).  If any exist, you will want to record the filename associated with these entries.  This what the entries look like:

0,0,"R0RMXURJ:1FD6:copyself","033F1989:My mailbox","Copies to self",0,20
0,0,"L523X8AV:43A9:FOL0048F","033F1989:My mailbox","Pegasus_Mercury related"

The content following the second colon is the filename of the pmm/pmi file pair.

With Pegasus Mail closed you would move these file pairs out of the mailbox directory and move them back one pair at a time starting Pegasus between each move.  This should make them visible in the folder list allowing you to move any messages out of the folder before deleting the folder itself.

Once all clean, restore of the default copyself.pmm & .pmi files, set it as the default copies to self folder, move the messages from My Copies to it, delete the My Copies folder.

Remember that Pegasus Mail needs to be closed when manipulating .pmm/.pmi files.
