Pegasus mail Version 4.81.1154 does NOT keep column widths in mail list between sessions

Every time I open Pegasus mail, I have to resize the columns, as it does NOT preserve the column widths in the list of new mail (or any of the other lists of mail such as junk, etc.).

Is there a fix for this? I tried to find answers in the forum here, but could not.

The only folder known to not maintain column width adjustments is the Copies to self folder.

When you adjust column widths, changes are made to STATE.PMJ and to the folder file. I think the first troubleshooting step should be to make sure those changes are being made.

  • Open a file explorer and navigate to your home mailbox directory. Be very careful not to make any changes, especially when Pegasus Mail is running.
  • Start Pegasus Mail if it isn't already running.
  • Open a folder, adjust its column widths, then close the folder.
  • Switch to the file explorer and sort the file list by date modified, newest on top.
  • Confirm that the top files are FOL?????.PMM and STATE.PMJ.

Thank you for your quick reply, but the column width changes are not kept in my new mail folder nor in the junk mail folder. I did not try the other folders.

I did as you suggested, and while the STATE.PMJ file is the most recently modified file, and the junk.PMM is as well when I change the column widths there, when I re-open the folder, the column widths go back to the default widths.

The state.pmj file has this when I view it, if that's helpful:

Well, I don't use my junk folder but can now confirm that column widths don't persist between sessions. I can understand why the copyself might not since it is unique in having to show "To:" in the From column but I don't understand junk.pmm. Perhaps fixed column widths are the norm for system default folders. I don't understand column width changes not persisting for you in the new mail folder though. Do you run Pegasus Mail with its main window maximized? If so, we know that doing so causes problems with saving desktop states. I am not aware of it affecting column widths but if you run maximized, try restoring it down, stretching it full-screen, and then testing the column behavior.

Not 100% sure, but I recall an issue with making changes to the folder settings, and it depending on how you closed Pegasus.
Think if you used the X in upper right corner the changes were not saved, have to use the File and Exit options.

With Pegasus not running look at the STATE.PMJ file.
under [FOLDER] and [READER]

Did a test to look at the lines between [FOLDER] and [READER]
Have almost all of my folder having the same settings. So had it remove the folders that all had same options.
Wish I knew what all those different numbers mean?
The squid folder is exactly the same except for a 257 instead of 256 that all others have?
The New Mail folder is different as is the deleted. The last one I think is a search result folder??
Actually have 100 lines between [Folder] and [Reader] but didn't want to post them all.

Brian,

I do NOT run Pegasus mail full screen. I have it sized so it takes about 1/3rd of my screen since I have a nice, large monitor smile

msetzerii,

I use the File and Exit options to close Pegasus mail.

I appreciate the quick replies. Any other ideas?

Brian,

Sorry, apparently I misunderstood. I thought your question was whether Pegasus Mail was maximized to take up my whole computer screen, not whether the new mail folder was maximized within Pegasus Mail.

I decided to try restoring just the new mail folder down and stretching it to fill the screen, as you said, and voila! the column widths persist, even after File/Exit and re-entering Pegasus Mail.

I then decided to try the same with all the folders, including the "copies to self" and ALL of them kept the column widths and window sizes. I made a quick window size change and X'd out instead of using File/Exit, and the change was kept there as well. So, you're right, if the window is maximized rather than manually stretching it out, the settings don't persist, but if you manually stretch the window to the size you want within Pegasus Mail, it keeps the window sizes as well as column widths.

Thank you!

Thanks for those details CarolineM. We now know that there is an issue saving the folder state when its window is maximized just like the issue with saving the desktop state when the main window is maximized.
