Lost one of my monitors -> cannot see Pegasus Mail on my screens

Hello:

I have been using Pegasus Mail for the last 25+ years.
Being able to run it in a Linux box under Wine was the deal breaker for my permanent move away from MS software over ten years ago.

Always worked perfectly and reliably, to the extent that I still run the 32-bit 4.70 version, never an issue.

But that does have a drawback: the absence of problems over the years has meant that I have developed little or no practise in Pegasus mail problem solving.

To the point:

My Devuan Linux system runs with a two card / three monitor setup and today the right monitor went south.
One of my two old but reliable SyncMaster 940n monitors finally gave up the ghost.

As a temporary replacement, I set up an also dated but practically unused Phillips 1024*768 P150S but now I find that when I start Pegasus Mail it is nowhere to be seen.

I know it starts because if I shut down the system and reboot, on restarting Pegasus Mail I get the usual 'in use' warning meaning that I shut down the system without properly closing it, so it was open albeit not visible to me.

I understand that Pegasus Mail registers its last position on screen when closed and opens in that same position when opened again, but that position (within the right monitor) is no longer valid which is probably why I cannot see it.

How can I edit / delete the registered position so that it will open where I can see it?

This is Pegasus Mail under Wine in a Linux box, so no Windows (?) so
solutions will apply.

Edit:

I made a back-up copy of /home/userid/.wine/drive_c/PMAIL/MAIL/ADMIN/state.pmj, deleted the original and restarted Pegasus Mail.

The only thing that changed was the position (from left monitor to centre monitor) of the start up screen (with the usual mailbox locked notice).

But that was all.
I still cannot see Pegasus Mail.

Thanks in advance.

Best,

S.

Think the PMAIL.INI has lines that specify the windows location.
Lots of them, but many show setting of 0 0 0 0

So don't see anything of pegasus?

What happens if you run wine winecfg from terminal window?
Backup PMAIL.INI before trying change things.

In Windows, prior to Windows 11, a right-click in the taskbar gave an option to "Cascade windows". This brought all open windows onto the primary monitor. Don't know about wine though.

@msetzerii is on the right track with his mention of PMAIL.INI. The entry is:

Application window rectangle =

To the right of the equal sign will be four numbers that identify the saved location and size of the Pegasus Mail main window. With Pegasus Mail closed, and PMAIL.INI backed up, edit PMAIL.INI changing the value of this entry to something like "= 0 0 800 400" (no quotes). Save the change, close the file, then start Pegasus Mail. You should see the main window tight top left on the primary monitor. Expect to have to resize it along with any child windows you normally have open.

Hello:

PMAIL.INI has lines that specify the windows location.

The entry is: Application window rectangle =

Yes, I just found it.

And with that data I was able to fixed the problem. 8^)

Backed up PMAIL.INI, deleted the original and started Pegasus Mail, which found itself within the primary monitor where I centered it to my liking and then shut it down.

I then checked the newly generated PMAIL.INI file, copied its Application window rectangle = values to the backed up file, renamed it back and that was it.

I can now see my Pegasus Mail again.

Thank you very much to both for such a quick and helpful reply.
Much appreciated.

Best,

S.

Hello:

Inded and that fixed the problem.

Like I mentioned in my OP, I have a two card/three monitor setup and if (for whatever reason) one monitor gets disconnected and does not come up when booting, the [tree monitor wide] desktop suffers changes which I can solve once I get the offending monitor on-line.

TL;DR
I cannot find where to set the position of the "No mail messages" pop-up notification window.
While the main Pegasus Mail window is at the right end of the desktop (right monitor) and that position is always saved to whatever position I want it to be at, the pop-up notification window will always open up at the left end of the desktop, no matter where I place it.

Where is the setting for that specific window?

Thanks in advance.

Best,

S.

If the OP is referring to the Telltale window, he can look in PMAIL.INI for Location of TLC of telltale window = ???? ?.

Hello:

I am clueless about that one.

Someone must know.
I have seen it open up in a different position so it must be set somewhere within pmail.ini or state.pmj.

... referring to the Telltale window ...

Hmm ...
No, I don't think so.

The Telltale window (which I have never used and must be enabled) is a floating window that does something (Pegasus fluttering?) when new mail arrives, implies that Pegasus Mail is constantly polling to check mail, something I personally see no need for.

The one I make reference in my OP is the one that appears on the desktop when you manually check your mail and there is no new mail messages waiting to be downloaded.

Thanks for your input.

I don't recognize that one. I don't see it when I do manual checks (POP3). Is it associated with selective mail download (which I don't use)?

It most probably is.
As you say, the "Check your POP3 host for new mail" button does not use it.

That said, I think that Selective mail download is one of the productive features Pegasus Mail has.
Even though I have always used Pegasus Mail at home, I have had to try and work with quite a few email clients before retiring, both MS and Linux based but cannot recall one with anything as useful as that.
Thanks for your input.

I have done some testing of the "no mail" selective mail download popup and I don't believe a configuration setting exists that controls its position. Moving it does not result in a modification to any Pegasus Mail file which leads me to assume that it is coded to appear in the center of the primary monitor.

Did a test?
With Pegasus closed copy PMAIL.INI to a backcup name.

Look at lines with windows rectangle
find "window rectangle" PMAIL.INI

see what lines have settings. Generally 4 numbers, many have 0 0 0 0

For my test, I changed them all to be 0 0 0 0
and then ran Pegasus. All windows seemed to open, but did show different sizes?

Not sure why, but checking afterward
Application window rectangle = -4 -4 1032 748

Came up with negative numbers?

For me, didn't notice real difference, so copied the original backup PMAIL.INI back
But you might find some different settings outside screen size. Especially ones with negative numbers.

Hello:

Thank you both for taking the time to look at this.

... leads me to assume that it is coded to appear in the center of the primary monitor.

Hmm ...
It appears in what for RandR would be monitor #1, albeit not in the centre.
But before my last monitor shake-up it was showing in the centre monitor which was a bit better than having it at the left monitor.

It is rather a nuisance as I open Pegasus Mail on my right monitor.
Done so for many years now.

But you might find some different settings outside screen size.

Yes, time permitting, I will have to do some testing.
Once again, thanks for your input.
Best,
S.
