Well, none of the changes I made to authentication settings

would cure the problem, so I have given up and simply created another BT

The daft thing is that we were using BT exclusively more

than 10 years ago, and only added the Tiscali address when BT suddenly “upgraded”

their system so that it would no longer transmit via our dial-up connection.   No problems with BT since we got their

broadband about 3 years ago.

I still don’t know whether our problem was in the BT or the

Tiscali system, though a Google search suggests that a lot of folk have had

problems with  Tiscali/TalkTalk recently.

I brought up the "words4.db3" file issue because mine got to 130 megs and then errored out -- I forget the exact circumstance and the exact error message.-I was forced to rename it and let PMail create a new one, and I'm now retraining it.

You could do what I rarely remembered to do: use the "Database cleanup" within Pegasus Mail to trim down your Spamhalter database. It's under Tools | Spam and Content Controls | Spamhalter... and the "database cleanup" button is at the bottom of the pop-up screen. It can't hurt and may help somewhat.

Well, that works like a champ. I'm now able to cut large numbers of messages, and the right-click method does NOT kill the folder. Thank you!

UPDATE: Spoke too soon. I can delete fairly large numbers of messages. Too many, and poof, the folder is deleted. It's a workaround, but that will have to do.

Sometimes I have a similar problem ... the solution is the same every time. As you write clearing the caches is the solution. But: you have to ensure, they are cleared (sometimes, Pegasus can't clear the cache file for the mailtext)!!! So: after clearing reopen the information dialog and if any of the chaches is not 0 bytes again, check name and position of cachefiles, leave Pegasus and delete them handish on filessystem. Then restart Pegasus.

If you have a recent good backup of your home mail box on drive ..mail\User you should be able to restore the hierarch.pm file while winpm-32 is closed and then on restart the folders would be recognized again. When improper or incomplete shut down or write to drive of hierarch.pm due to OS  problem or when you delete or rename hierarch.pm file on restart a new one is built automatically but with all folders found in a flat top level with no trays. There is no automatic way to rebuild tray structure and that must be done manually unless you can restore good hierarch.pm file. Each username, subdir under \mail has own hierarch.pm file.

Perfect Thank You!. Renaming the state file brought the messages back to the list and allowed me to see a corrupted email based on the random characters in the subject field and also a number of blank lines at the bottom of the new mail window indicating more than one corrupt message. I copied all usable mail to a temporary folder, deleted all .cnm files and copied the good mail back to the new mail folder. Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Try starting winpm-32 using command line including -o to start in offline mode. See Help, Commandline options. It may not be possible to Edit and save file while open and locked as would be the case if the .pnd file is in use and connection is active and the indicator is showing red as when connection is hung. You can get to it using other Identity while winpm-32 is running because the affected connection and .pnd are not open and locked at the time of edit and save.

I apologize for the slow response.  With the computer gone for 48 hours I ended up WAY behind, and am still scrambling to catch up.

Ok, I added the -Z 32 to the target line and here is some of the contents of the file.Some type of server disagreement?? When I look at the POP info for Port 995 it all looks good. Maybe it is an authentication error???

I don't know what kind of files it uses, though it must be the same as Thunderbird since they say if you migrate to Thunderbird you can simply rename your Spicebird subfolder to Thunderbird and all will be well (haven't tried it yet though). However, I understood that TB used *.mbx folders and I can't find any such on my computer. When I look at the Properties of any given folder from within SB this is a typical location it gives:  

              mailbox:///C:/Users/Me/AppData/Roaming/Spicebird/Profiles/vpvf0d8y.default/Mail/Local Folders/Inbox

              mailbox:///C:/Users/Me/AppData/Roaming/Spicebird/Profiles/vpvf0d8y.default/Mail/Local Folders/Folders.sbd/Work

Does that help? However when I open the C:/Users/Me/AppData/Roaming/Spicebird/Profiles/vpvf0d8y.default    folder in Windows Explorer it doesn't show any further subfolders..... I've jsut checked that again and now they are there!

...So, the deepest embedded sub-folders seem to have two files associated (one without an extension!?) and one with an .msf extension.Folders above that have an .sbd extension.

So, for example, my work folder (mailbox) has an .sbd extension, then within it there are other subfolders with .sbd extensions plus lots of pairs of files one without and extension and one with the .msf extension. The .msf extensions represent subfolders which do not contain any further subfolders within them (just messages, though those can't be seen from Windows Explorer). The .sbd extensions represent folders with another level of subfolders.

 Yes, I've noticed there's no calandar/task list capability in Pegasus so I'm still debating what to do - to move to TB and retain that capability (via an add-in I think) but have a whole load of stuff (instant messaging, news feeds.. ) or move to PM (which looks potentially like a better e-mail program) and find another stand-alone calandar/Task list program.

 If you can help me do the conversion without too much pain/time-loss the latter may be the more attractive [:D]

Did you by any chance change the install directory from the proposed one in setup?  For Win 7, Pegasus Mail needs to be installed in c:\pmail not in the Program Files directory tree. This is because Pegasus Mail needs read and write permissions to its directories.

If so, you need to re-install Pegasus Mail.

I tried to delete the Identity - while within the Identity !
You can't do that.  Must be in another Identity.

There is a limit as to how many characters allowed in the TO: field. May cutoff a few addresses - sub 1024 IIRC approx 920. 

No easy way to tell due to email address vary in length. 

BCC: may be better (same restrictions) yet will not disclose everyones address. 

Food for thought.

If you have a "good" NOT SPAM, do this:  Highlight it, right click, then point to Spamhalter classification, and select Train message as NOT SPAM.  Then while it's highlighted, go to Tools, and point down the list to Spam and content controls, then click on Global Whitelist to save the email address, so in the future those emails will be recognized as NOT SPAM.

 Ooooo, nice observation.

This particular flavor of spam does indeed NOT have a To: entry.

I take it you are using the "Spam and Content controls" -> "Content control"?

(I have been using "Mail filtering rules", I may need to broaden my skill set :-)
