I would like to suggest an alternative solution, independent of OS version, which you can ignore if you have found an alternative.

The procedure to export Outlook Contacts and import them to Pegasus Mail address books is as follows:

1. In Pegasus Mail set up a new address book, I suggest a name of Outlook

2. Download PMVcard from this site from url http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/pegadd/entry44115.aspx

3. Unzip the downloaded file (pmvcard.zip) into your Pegasus Mail NewMail directory

4. In Outlook (or similar software), export the Contacts file in vCard format to a file such as Outlook.icf in the same directory as 3 above

5. In Windows Explorer drag/drop the file created in 4. over the file, PmVcard.exe

6. You should now see a formatted display of the vcards created by Outlook, at the end of this display you should see an instruction to import this tab-delimted file into Pegasus Mail

7. In Pegasus Mail click the Address book menu, and select the "Import from tab-delimited file" choice with file just created.

8. Click OK to begin import. After a few seconds the program PMVcard will end. You can now restart Pegasus Mai and view the address book, Outlook (see 1, above)

9. Browse through the entries, and edit where obvious issues show up.

 10. I recommend you read the documentation (Pmvcard.rtf) to identify issues and workarounds.   It is important to understand that neither PMVcard or any other software (ie Dawn) can make use of most of the data stored in Outlook.   The person's name and email address are the all-important data values. Other data such as postal address and Telephone device numbers and types are information only. There is a reference to the RFC concerning VCARD stream content in my documentation. You should note that vendors are very liberal in their interpretation of the RFC rules.

I hope this may help.  Please note that when Pegasus Mail V5 is made available, that most of the issues will be resolved and the Pegasus Mail Address Books will look more like Contacts file content.

In case David has noticed this thread, Novell released "Novell Client 2 SP1 for Windows 7 (IR1)" which fixes a problem with locking databases.  However, with the new client installed, using Pegasus 4.52 in a Netware environment, I am unable to move messages into or between folders unless I continue using the older "Novell Client 2 for Vista".

When doing the migration first do a Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info in Pegasus Mail and note the HOME mail directory.  Then when Transend asks for a directory specify the HOME mail directory.  Make sure Pegasus Mail is not running when you do the transfer.

If the folder files (*.PMI/*.PMM) are already in the HOME mail directory then try  the following procedure.  This has worked for several others to restore the functionality of the  message folders:

1.  Use Help | About Pegasus Mail | Info to determine your mail
    directory.  Exit Pegasus mail.

2.  Rename the file HIERARCH.PM in your HOME mail directory to
    HIERARCH.SAV.

3.  Run WinPMail.  Your HIERARCH.PM will be re-created and should
    start working correctly.

Note:  This will delete any tray structure you have created and it
will have to be recreated.  The process will not affect any
mail of mail folders you have, it only affects the display of
           the folders.

OK, that worked.

I reinstalled 4.51, the same version I'd been using, in the same place: C:\PMAIL so it was C:\PMAIL\Programs

I copied over the backed up MAIL file: C:\PMAIL\MAIL

And that was that...

Thanks.

You do not use "Add mailbox to list" to add identities, you do this to point at directories containing mail files (*.cnm files) and folders (*.PMM/PMI file pairs).  You you need to use the same path to the directory and name for the mailbox you used when you first added it when  you restore the mailbox after closing it.

This only moves the current mail folders to a different structure.

Do you see a tiny dropdown button next to 'Reply'? If you click it, it will show you three options at the bottom of the fold-out menu, saying 'Button does...'. You can set that to Reply-all, if you want.

Using version 4.52 with Win 7 pro. I have previously migrated Pmail from two XP machines to Win7 machines as one of the advantages is easy transfer of the mail folder. No problem with either and the icon issue in Win7 is solved with 4.52 . I have now attempted another migration in exactly the same procedure and have virtually unreadable font in mail folders message list columns. I have tried copying the fonts from a machine which is working well, using the .ini file from a good configuration, clean installs and update installs.Changing the display font size has no effect. I have read Davids' explanation elsewhere but have not found any fixes posted. Has anyone come up with the solution?

Looks like you are using AVG as a proxy and have an improper setup in AVG.

I feel it has something to do with some attachement that seems to automatically get sent with every message I send, but I could be wrong, just a thought. I will keep you posted and thanks again.

That sentence is interesting. Can you confirm the following setting in your Pegasus options?

Tools | Options | Sending Mail | Don't add attachment information sections to multipart messages

If that is NOT checked, then there's a part of your outgoing messages that looks like an attachment but is just text that says, basically, "This message has the following attachments". Whenever you attach something to your message, that section would be put in automatically. It's pretty useless these days and actually tends to confuse people when they see it.

If it isn't checked on your system, check it and see if that makes any difference. It certainly shouldn't be causing any problems in any other mail clients (other than user confusion) but you never know.

Here's the help file entry for this option:

"Normally, when you send a message with attachments, Pegasus Mail automatically attaches a small textual section describing each attachment. The textual section includes the file's original name, size, date and type, and is useful to help the recipient identify and place the attachment. In some cases, for instance, when sending to fax gateways, you may prefer to suppress this information section. If you wish to suppress the section, check this control."

The other thing that is of course sent with every outgoing message is your signature. If you have a particularly flamboyant signature, containing HTML, images and links, perhaps that's causing a problem somewhere. Again, it shouldn't, but some clients suck.

The address books in Pegasus are a long-recognised weak point in an otherwise superb program. For many years a rewrite has been on the cards. However, it has strangely always been overlooked in favour of other new features.

With the impending new mail store, perhaps David is embarking on a programme of re-engineering the basic blocks upon which Pegasus is built and we can but hope that the address books are to be revised sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, I suspect that all you can do is break your large address book into several smaller ones.

Hi All,

We use pegasus with mercury, and yesterday i tried to upgrade our existing installation of pegasus.
Everything seems to work fine with mine account, so a try't a few other accounts, and then it crashes.

Anybody an idear what could cause this, is there a tool to check mail users?
It also seems that it only works fine with recently created mailboxes....

 Regards,

 Sander

Your wife runs Pegasus from her own Windows account? Does she have any other internet-related problems? Does she have this Pegasus problem if she logs into her Pegasus account while YOU are logged into Windows?

I have changed two settings in the options; outgoing mail; messages & replies.  I have turned on "Use Mime features" and "Rich (formatted) text".  This seems to have cured the problem, in that I have received no further complaints, and several emails seem to have gone out properly.  I guess time will be the true test.

I have no idea why you would have had MIME turned off. That seems like a good candidate for being the cause of the problem.
