Oh, let's not beat about the bush here - it IS a bug in the program, but as I alluded to before, the maximise/restore problem is a long-standing one. I don't know why or how it's still around but hopefully you understand the triggers better now and know how to deal with it.
Well, I don't feel quite so much like an idiot now. I can live with a bug AND doing my maximizing manually. At least it holds its size...
All previous versions of Pmail never gave me this problem, so that added to my puzzlement.
Again, I appreciate your help and patience. I'm not usually so dense! [:|]
> So far, from the other (awkwardly long and disjointed thread) it seems that different folks see different symptoms at different times. Some degree of intermittancy is pretty obvious. > This is going to be a tricky one to debug. :-(
This is specific to Win7 and David's not going to be making any changes to Pegasus Mail until he can see the problem in Win7. Probably it's going to be no problem at all to fix once David gets his Win7 development system up and running
Would this method not keep the deleted mails still in place on the home system? To prevent this, should I (after making a backup in case) delete all the .PMM and .PMI files in the home folder before copying the ones from the stick to that folder?
That is not necessary. What I understand from what you have described is that the folders are identical when you leave. When you travel, you work with the mail folders on your stick, deleting mail, moving mail etc. When you get back home and copy the folders back to your home system, you should get the prompt that you're about to overwrite (*.PMM and *.PMI) files coupled with the question whether you wish to proceed. If you overwrite the old files (after making a backup), you will just end up with the new files. For a better understanding, it may help to know that the *.PMM files are ASCII files that contain the various folders' entire collections of mail lumped together. To get an idea what such a file looks like, trying opening it a text editor. The *.PMI files are the mail *index* folders.

Will this ensure that the moved files are in the correct folders, too? Sounds too easy to be true, if that is the case! I love Pegasus Mail for the ease of restoring backups and, in this case, doing this complicated procedure with such apparent ease.
Thomas Stephenson suggested that I reinstall Pegasus Mail over my current version as an update. This fixed the problem and I was able to retrieve all of my old messages.
Like many fastmail users, I changed to insecuressl.messagingengine.com for POP3/IMAP/SMTP to overcome SSL issues. Pegasus 4.70 now works with mail.messagingengine.com & SSL.
I don't see anything "garbled". I see what I expect - the raw message data including headers.
To transfer messages you are best off using the "add mailbox" option to temporarily connect to a folder and then drag your messages there. Searching these forums will give you fuller instructions on using this method.
And using CTRL+Delete (CTRL+Y if using confirmations) is quicker since it bypasses saving the deleted messages. ;-)

I'm a little wary of such drastic measures :-) I prefer to use the Deleted messages folder (which I've set to persist between sessions) as a safety net. Attached to this folder, though, is a folder-close mail filtering rule that deletes all messages that are older than one day. Pmail's mail filtering rules rule!
1. For Steffen, I agree is not a good politic to change both windows and pegasus. I have to say that searching for a solution I downgraded to 4.41 from 4.51. That is, I installed 4.41 over the normal directory and .....now it seems to work !!!. The only problem is the icons affair which still do not work (text, text and figures, etc that I have heard in this forum) but that is minor and I can work. Therefore, windows 7 and pegasus 4.41 work nicely in my hands.
2. As for the other solution, thanks. I will try reinstalling 4.51 again and creating session logs and will paste here for experience administrators. Thanks a lot.
I have used PM for over 10 years now and keep a lot of folders. I have 3 PCs now: 1 at work, 1 at home and 1 for the road. I also have a USB key and have isntalled on all three PCs the software SyncBackSE. Every time I go from place to the other, I sync the mail folder exclusively and exclude the *.ini files from any comparison.
In this way, I ahve all new mails, all folders, all addressbooks etc on the USB key and I just plug into the PC I am going to use and sync again taking care to delete the "new" mail in the receiving PC since these have been dealt with before.
It works perfectly, never a loss of data and no need to worry about disk crashes any longer.
I know to run pconfig from the past to change the directories, but I cannot seem to do this in Windows 7 64 bit!?
The 64 bit version of Windows does not support 16 bit software. You might get a copy of DOSBox and run this on the system. DOSBox will allow you to run, mount and install the c: drive in a DOS emulator and thus allow you to run pconfig.exe.
Was there a lower limit in v. 4.31? I have just updated to 4.62. With 4.31, when the Deleted Messages folder exceeded about 500 messages, strange things seemed to happen. For example, my wife, on her PC, recently lost her Deleted Messages folder.
Thanks for that TRS, I just installed a free pdf printer and when I made it my default it sorted it. I now remember something like this years ago, same old problem I guess. Thanks for all the help guys.
p.s. I read your other thread huntingtower - probably a better solution but I was born lazy and the pdf printer trick will do for me. Cheers.
Thanks, Aderoy. I could not open Pegasus as you suggested but comments from you and Thomas helped me locate the new mail messages and identify the culprit that caused the problem. My Pegasus is up and running again! Thanks you both very much!!
