I had several identities set up on Pegasus, but then decided to download work emails on a different PC.

I duly set up the new account on the new PC, and deleted it from the old one - except emails are still being received on the old machine.  How do I stop this?  It tells me the account still exists, but it does not appear on the list of identities, or in the network configuration menus.

Many thanks

Kim

Steffan's solution is perfect. But what might caused the messages still to be downloaded is that the pop3 definition can have been in use by multiple identities (shared). So perhaps you had the definition added to the <default> identity as well.

And as another FYI: I could only make a proper suggestion by looking at crash dumps created by my , so please consider using it if you encounter any crashes and the solution isn't already posted anywhere on this site, e.g. in my First Aid post.

PMAIL.USR is required when you use Pegasus Mail in multiuser mode (or network mode which is the same but the mail directory structure is then located on a share on the network). PMAIL.USR does not exist when you run Pegasus Mail in standalone mode, as there is only *one* user.

PMAIL.USR records the names of the users (not identities) who have a mail directory on the system. PMAIL.USR is a text file whom structure is :

U (or A);username;fullname :

  • U for a 'normal' user, A for an admin (the guys who can add users if the FS allows them to write in this directory)
  • username: what you type to be identified by Pegasus Mail
  • full name: what you see when you click on Adresses/Local users

PMAIL.USR has nothing to do with  the rights to read/modify the mail structure, these rights are given by the fs. A mail directory structure can be as follow (3 users):

Mail\pmail.usr

      \admin

      \user1

      \user2

Where pmail.usr is :

A;admin;mail administrator

U;user1; full name of user1

U;user2; full name of user2

Admin has the right 'modify' on the structure

user1 has the rights 'read' on pmail.user and 'modify' on the content of  Mail\user1

user2 has the rights 'read' on pmail.user and 'modify' on the content of  Mail\user2

if you want user1 to be able to send mails to user2 using the mail transport included in Pegasus Mail you have to give him the right 'add files' on  Mail\user2, a better solution is to create a group including the mail users and to give the right 'add file' on each user mail directory and the right 'read' on PMAIL.USR to that group
I am new to Pegasus; I installed it just a few days ago. I like the program, but every single email I send or receive has the same date, August 9. How can I correct this?
Increase the width of the date column so it shows  23 Aug 09 instead of Aug 09.  ;-)

Have already spoken with ISP who has advised that I uninstall and reinstall programme.

Typical ISP response when they have no clue as to what is happening.

Today, I have upgraded from 4.4 to 4.51!!!

Still this problem remains.

For your information :-

Error message appears  after about 45 seconds

"Connection timeout (no response from host)

and

Connection established 210.48.65.133

0018 + OK     Hello there

0021   USER

0024 + OK     Password required

0015 PASS    XXXXXXXX

0016 + OK   logged in

Outgoing messages transmit perfectly.  I am only able to read the incoming messages through webmail - less convenient!!!

Try using File | Selective mail download to see what happens.  There may be one huge message on the server and your timeout might be too low.  If this still does not work turn on session logging and post the result of an attempted download.
You might want to try the Pegasus Mail for Windows debug option, to trace all tcp/ip activity.

When using version 4.x you can activate the debug mode in Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> "Create internet session logs (advanced diagnostic use only)".

After testing and closing down Pegasus Mail for Windows, you will find one or more files called tcp0001.wpm (increasing numbers) in your Home Mailbox Location (you can determine that location by going to Help -> About Pegasus Mail -> info in the Menubar).
You can open that files using Notepad.
Study the files for errors.

Feel free to mail me the files (off-list), but first do remove your password from them.

Dear Thomas Stephenson,

thanks for taking the time to post a reply. It appears, that the identities from the ini-file have been purged entirely (who knows why...). Pressing "Add" didn't make them come back (well, I could try... didn't sound very promising to me anyway).

It seems I need to recreate them, which is probably a bit difficult, but possible (need to look up all the account-info that's long forgotten).

Regards,
Pelle.

Pelle,

Some of the information, the crucial one which defines the pop3 details etc., may still be accessible even the rest of the profile information from the ini file might have got lost (at least this is what I understand and what I believe Thomas Stephenson highlighted). With that information it should be fairly easy to restore your identity profiles.

The pop3 and account information is stored in special files in your PM email folder on your hard disk. The files start with "POP" followed by some characters and have an extension ".PND" (e.g. POP7JFM4.PND ). Some of the information may help you regenerate your profiles (at least part). While you may access those definition files with an text editor not everything may be used e.g. such as password. However, you should be able to access that information from within PM, see below.

I would try the following. Start PM, go to Tools -> Identities -> and add a new one. Then click become. Now go to Tools - > Internet options and under the General section enter the email for that identity. Then go to the "Receiving (POP3)" section and then click on add. A list of available POP3 definitions should pop up from which you can select the appropriate one. They should actually be the ones you had created previously?! Then go to "Sending (SMTP)" and select the appropriate sending profile one.

Repeat the process for all identities you previously had.

Let me know if it works.

Cheers

Thomas S.

I have a similar problem - - sometimes the images in HTML messages show up - sometimes I get just the gray boxes.  I always get the BearHTML counter at the bottom left of the status bar - shows the images being downloaded.

At the moment,  I have PM 4.51 installed on two XP Pro machines and one Vista HP (all are fully patched).  For the past several days, the XP boxes show pics just fine - the Vista machine will only occassionaly shows them to me.  I have had periods when an XP won't show them either.  When I do see pics - they also end up in the cache folder - otherwise it seems that the download didn't really get them.  I have tried disabling both the firewall and virus scanning just to be sure I'm not blocking them - same results.

I do have Tools / Options / Message Reader set to automatically display remote-linked graphics and I have the Winsock32 set to load Always.  I've done a reinstall/over install of PM to be sure the BearHTML files are not bad - same results - - and I've downloaded the Bear files along and copied them into the Pmail folder - same results.

 Thanks for any insight

Mark

To reproduce:

Create the general rule-set: If attachment FullName matches "*.*" DeleteAttmt ""

Then select a new mail with some attachments in the "New mail" folder, highlight it and apply the rule. Crashes Pegasus here all the time.
Thanks to this clear description and some good detective work by Michael and the test team, I have now corrected this problem. It will only occur in situations where more than one attachment is deleted in a single rule pass - something that can basically only happen if you use a regular expression to select your candidate attachments. The problem is now fixed for v4.62, which will be out very soon (to fix the problems with IE9 and to introduce new versions of TER and HTS for editing).

Cheers!

It is update and that is the option I used.

The update renamed

pmail.usr to pmail.us_. I had not considered that a change as Vista did

not change either the last access or last modification dates (both of

which I have visible in explorer).

Once I renamed the file to

pmail.usr Pegasus started successfully as before the update. Would this

not be considered a "programming error"?

I doubt if PMail did this, I suspect that this is just another one of Vista's strange functions. The programming error looks like one of MS's since it does not happen with any version of XP and.or Linux with Wine.
On a different subject,

can I disable the splash screen about saved messages that now appears

at startup when there are msgs in the "drafts" folder, other than

deleting/moving those msgs?

These are the Autosaved messages and you can user File | Open saved messages and then either delete or process the Autosaved messages.

I'm using the latest version, 4.51.

Anyhow it seems I've found the problem. It looks that when I double clicked on the destination folder for the move action - I didn't noticed this before - it looks that the destination folder didn't appear in the move field of the rule wizard.

Dunno if it's been my fault due to a bad double click or what... but now it works. The weird thing is that it happened more than one times. Perhaps I've been too absent minded in last days!

Sorry guys.

My email provider requires that my POP server has a port setting of

995. Maybe it's just me, but I don't seem to be able to find anywhere

where I can change this setting. Is this possible to do or am I out of

luck and therefore unable to use Pegasus?

Port 995 tells me that they are using a "Direct SSL" connection.  Go to Tools | Internet Options | POP3  settings and edit the POP3 setup.  Hit the "Security" tab and select the "via direct SSL connect"

I've sorted it now - I renamed my copyself folder as copyself4 and made a new copyself folder, selected it and it works.

Thanks for the replies

As far I know to classify a message as spam should be pretty easy. Right-click, then Spamhalter classification, and train message as spam (or click on the semaphore icon in the preview pane message)

Said that, I assumed that now Pegasus would move the message in the junk or suspicious mail folder. I've also turned on the Basic Spam Detection.
No, it will not move that message anymore, it will use the now stored information to classify new incomming mail as spam. If you mover the message in the spamfolder yourself (any message) it'will be used to train spamhalter exactly the same as using the rightmouse.
The funny side of the story is that I'm finding non-spamming email in the junk folder, while the spam is still in New Mail folder.

Where am I wrong?
Training. Just move the message out of the spamfolder and Spamhalter will be trained that it's no spam.

Steffan,

Thanks much.

I ran into problems trying to edit the corrupted address book as some entries would dissapear even though I thought I was being carefull about dealing with the duplicates and the improper associations between names and data.

I was using V4.41 and just now installed V4.51 over the old one.  This fixed the problem.  Solved!

The log is:-

  • Connection established to 62.254.26.202
    >> 0053 +OK Virgin Media POP3 server ready [ e4c558782BY ].
  • << 0019 USER bh003d9032_2
    >> 0005 +OK
    << 0015 PASS XXXXXXXX
    >> 0056 -ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

The primary and secondary servers are the same Virgin Mail

Looks like the username and/or password is bad or this POP3 server does not really support your POP3 account.

I have a similar problem where I work - some users have >1.5GB mail folders. The best solution, if you do not want to backup the folder each time just because the date has changed or because a 2kb email has been added to it is to split the folder into smaller folders. I don't mean to create trays - I mean to create several new folders and distribute your mail between them.
