Okay, I did the following things:

a) changed the timeout to 360 seconds

b) got an advanced log:

    23:30:52.078 --- Connection closed normally at Wed, 24 Dec 2008 23:30:52. ---\0A\0A

c) tried the Selective Mail Download option - this time it got 7 headers rather than 5 before halting and then giving the same socket read timeout error.

d) checked the chipset on the Dell Latitude D630 I'm using - it's got an Intel 965GM chipset.

e) installed the TCP Optimiser, checked to see what the maximum MTU size for pop.googlemail.com was for me, found out that it was 1450, altered all network adapters to use this value and turned off MTU discovery, restarted to apply this value, and then tried to download mail. I'm afraid it still gives the same error!

I'm afraid I'll be away on holiday from tomorrow, so may not be able to respond to anything until the New Year - but thank you very much for your prompt response, especially at this time of year!

From memory, from the last time I had to do something like this, here's what I would try:

1. Start Pegasus Mail
2. for each existing folder of mail
a. create a new folder in "Unix Mailbox format" with a similar name (e.g. "Geophysics Stuff - MBX" for "Geophysics Stuff")
b. copy (or move) all the messages from the original folder into the MBX folder
3. using Windows Explorer or some similar utility (I use Total Commander), copy the resulting UNX*.MBX folders to somewhere that your Eudora system can find them.

You may need to rename the UNXnnnnn.MBX files to something else to give them Eudora-recognizable names -- ISTR that Thunderbird uses the actual file name to name the folder, and Eudora, which is now based (I think) on the Thunderbird code-base, may do the same..  The name you gave each folder in Pegasus Mail (e.g. "Geophysics Stuff - MBX") is stored in the first line of the matching UNXnnnnn.PMG file, which can be read using any ASCII display program like "lister.exe" from the author of Total Commander (get it at www.ghisler.com) or "list.com" or any other similar ASCII viewer.

Peg2Eud notes are here:

ftp://ftp.fh-hannover.de/pandora/files/mail/pmail/econv10.txt

and the software is available here:

Free software from A.N.D. Technologies - Econv: Eudora <-> Pegasus Email Conversion
http://www.andtechnologies.com/econv.html

Hope this helps and one of these works for you.

Don't you just hate it when isues resolve without any intervention. This has been stable now for a number of days and I can't even guess as to why.

At least it now works as designed:-)

Thomas,

Thanks for the the information .... yes, I found the solution by 'right clicking' the scrolling tab on the right side of the page which produces a few choices ... by selecting the page 'down' (in this case) produced the 'opened' email message ... closing the email and then selecting 'page up' closed the scroll tab .... this 'condensed' the page into a 'normal format and once again I was able to open messages in the normal manner.

Cheers,

Barry

1.  Move all the messages you want to save to a temp folder and delete all the messages in the original folder.

2.  Use the right click "recover deleted space" to remove all
    messages form the folder.

3.  If step 2 works then simply move all of the messages from the
temp folder back to the original folder and delete the temp
    folder.

4.  If step 2 fails then delete the original folder and rename the
temp folder to match the original name.  Reset the filter
    pointing to this folder.

Thanks for clarifying that Greenman,

It is true, that I must accept some blame in this, vis a vis carrying out the upgrade, and not devoting time to configuring.
YET.....I do know that even if I had configured it - that configuration would not have prevented the loss of the data.....this is the worrying issue.

At most (prior to this event), I might have switched off the 'delete after 30 days' - but this would not have saved the 2 files it deleted immediately, because it was never supposed to delete any files - it was supposed to move them to quarantine.

Of course you do raise an interesting point on the potential to 'fail to boot' after file movement to quarantine, but that opens up a whole different can of worms that raises major questions of risk-benefit of AV use.

However, for my feedback to AVG I think I need to concentrate on the primary issue of 'file deletion' outside the programs own setup config. ie. AVG8 clearly has an unforseen glitch...
...and the secondary issue of my suggestion that 'any found threats' after a scan, should cause a warning dialogue box to appear, that demands specific action (such as viewing the virus vault).

This feedback, I will attempt to transmit.........though after taking on board the advice from other experienced contributers to this forum, it seems that the best route thereafter will be to instigate my own scans, and therefore be fully aware of the task, and the possible consequences. ie. switch off scheduled scans.

a good way to synchronize pmail is installing the program from the setup file on your 2nd computer in the same directory as on your old computer. then simply copy the old files over the new installed one. this works pretty well. i use it to synchronize up to three notebooks that way. to make it faster i use a sync tool called viceversa, but it should work with any tool you can get. synctoy is a free tool available from microsoft, working with vista.

Most of the time it's because there is a huge message someplace.  In your case it sound like one to be downloaded since clearing the CNM files did not fix it.  You could use POP3 filtering to prevent downloading of mail over a certain size and then go up once in awhile using Selective mail download to see what kind of large messages are on the server.

Thanks a heap! I am pretty good about googling around for help on this kind of thing, but did not ever have to look at AVG before so I didn't even go there. They actually have a good knowledge base! There are instructions there on how to pick the plugin at the time of install, and that to "re do" which plugin is used you have to reinstall. From the sound of it, that should work.

Thanks again.

Partially solved my own problem....found that if I widened the folders pane, I could see an icon that switches from the list mode to preview mode.  The icon may be new?  In any case, it was hidden due to the narrow pane.  I still find no menu item to do the same thing.  Maybe it has been replaced by the icon?

I cannot figure why anyone would want to permanently choose (or disable) either the list or the preview, given that preview is automatically turned off if certain errors occur.

Dear M,

thank you very much!! I'm very pleased with your file, saves me a lot of time and accidently downloading directly using the wrong icon as an automatic habit to use the last icon. Oh, and I love the "Review queued mail" button.[:D]

When I saw your txt, it seemed familiar with something I did in a former life.....amazing how fast time can cut your memory in all of these not recoverable pieces.....

 Kind regards, Boy
