Somewhat different TIFF error response

Thanks for your reply, Michael! This information is good to know.

I'm now satisfied knowing that the problem doesn't involve IER, that Apple Mail TIFFs have been an issue, and that another Pegasus user (Ian) has exactly the same problem under the same unique circumstances.[Y]

Having this TIFF problem so rarely and using the browser interface as a quick workaround aren't big problems for me, so I wouldn't ask you to spend any valuable time trying to ascertain that it is indeed a TER problem.

I've bounced the failing message to myself, but then it doesn't reproduce the error exactly (after bouncing it, I CAN at least access the TIFF file in Pegasus attachment and save it to my computer - so there's yet another workaround!). Thus, I'm not sure I could ever have provided a truly "untouched failing" message for you (plus, I've since deleted the message in question and emptied the "trash").

To have delivered you a truly untouched failing message, I would have had to ask the original sender to send it to you directly from her computer - rather not do that.

But again, my thanks!

I've been reading earlier posts about problems with TIFF files crashing Pegasus, but the posts seem to be a few years old and somewhat different in nature. I'm now having a very consistent problem receiving TIFFs that don't crash Pegasus (I have 4.70, Build 546) but are simply not made available to me via Pegasus.

Every time I open a message with a TIFF attachment from a certain friend (who says others have no problems with these TIFFs), I get this message in my Pegasus: "This TIFF image not supported (upsupported Bits per Pixel) - TIFF image processing error".

If I click OK on the error message, the message opens, but it is completely blank and the attachment tab is greyed out (and totally deactivated). The Raw View, however, is loaded with bewildering information, but of course no image.

I started trying to remedy this by adding both TIFF and TIF to "Content viewers" in Pegasus and selecting "Let Windows choose and run an appropriate application" - I made sure my Windows has TIFF associated with TPViewer.exe (ThumbsPlus Viewer) and it already does. Nevertheless, Pegasus still gave the error message above, and it opened a blank message with a greyed-out, deactivated attachment tab.

Then I selected "Run this program" for TIFF and TIF - I browsed and selected "TPViewer.exe" - closed and reopened Pegasus - same error, blank message, inactive attachment tab. I tried entering my other image programs after "Run this program" - closed, reopened Pegasus - same errors. However, Pegasus did not crash after any of this. It just won't permit me to access the TIFF in any way, not even to save it.

HOWEVER, if I go to the web-based interface of this same e-mail account, I can easily download the same TIFF to my desktop, click on its icon (automatically marked with a ThumbsPlus icon), and TPViewer opens it without any problem whatsoever! In fact, the TIFF opens in all the other image programs I use, which I have tried in "Run this program" in Pegasus. But with Pegasus as intermediary, I simply cannot access the TIFF file in any way.

Dave

PS: Just tried "Attachment type information" in Content Viewer options - no change in the above behavior.

Are you using Bearhtml or IERenderer to display graphics images? Could you please forward me a copy of the Tiff file, or the whole message so I can validate the internal setting. Please send it to me at irelam@telus.net

Thank you

Martin Ireland (author of Bearhtml)

I'm using IERenderer. Will forward the whole e-mail with some additional info.

Thanks,

Thank you. I received a copy of the message.  The Tiff file was base64 encoded, and for some reason I have not figured out yet, the decode process did not work.  I manually decoded the file and viewed it in Irfanview successfully. I recommend you get the sender to change the filetype for images, to either Gif or Jpg.  P.S I am passing your message on to Michael who authored IERenderer to see what the original error message is all about.

I also get the same error message from messages with an embedded tiff image that I receive from one person - I think he uses Apple Mail, if that makes any difference.

Yes AppleMail seems to be involved [:(]

And Martin, good to know that the TIFF didn't decode for you, either. I'm relieved that it's not just a problem with my system. And yes, I'm fairly sure this one sender, the only one who sends me TIFFs and the only one who induces this kind of error message, uses Apple Mail.

However, this sender protests that she has no idea how to convert her huge TIFFs into JPGs (or even BMPs), both of which my Pegasus handles just fine (even very big ones), and she's peevishly resistant to learning how: "Most other people don't have problems with my photos!" Well, most other people must be using a web-based e-mail interface or Apple Mail. (Frankly, I'm not that keen on getting her pics anyway...)

Speaking of web-based e-mail, I'm still puzzled as to why I can download the TIFF from the browser interface of my e-mail (using IE or Firefox) and can immediately open and view the TIFF in my local image viewer (but not in the browser).

And to deepen the mystery (which I don't really need to solve), the "basic" version of the web-based interface shows the message and a link to d/l the image (but not the image itself) and it downloads the TIFF image just fine, but the "advanced" interface of the same e-mail account does not even show the e-mail message to be there at ALL, even though it's still in my inbox in the "basic" interface and in Pegasus.[:^)]

Meanwhile, thank you for all the time and effort you've put into this, Martin! I'm reassured by both yours and Ian's feedback, and quite ready to let it go now. I'm still interested in learning what Michael (re IERenderer) has to say if he gets a chance to take a look.

With my appreciation,

Dave

  1. Apple Mail TIFFs are a known issue since at least 2011 when I looked into a sample since Pegasus Mail's TER reader couldn't properly deal with them.
  2. Last night I created a "quick and dirty" test HTML mail including such a TIFF image which displayed fine in IER using IE 11 on my Win7 system.
  3. The error message cited in the initial post of this thread doesn't look like anything IER would create. I think it's a TER error message.

If you want me to look into this any further I would like to get two things from any of you:

  • a screen shot of the error message (most likely being a TER error);
  • an untouched "failing" message containing such a TIFF image;
  • and an exact description of how to duplicate the error.

Can anyone provide these?
