Hi, just trying to do this now, but can't get it to work.

In the alias, do I put the entire email address, i.e. help@mydomain.com, or just 'help'?

And in the 'real address' field, do I put FILE: c:/folder/filename.txt or simply the path and filename?

And I assume the 'alias' shouldn't also have a user account?

A walk-through would be helpful, please.

Thanks

Andy

This is what Mercury help says on the subject:

Autoresponders
An autoresponder is an e-mail address that simply returns a predefined message to whomever sends it mail. Autoresponders differ from automatic replies in that once the automatic response has been sent, no further attempt is made to deliver the incoming message - it is simply discarded.
In order to support autoresponders, Mercury supports two specialised aliases that work differently from other aliases - FILE: aliases and TFILE: aliases. A FILE: alias is an address that will return the contents of a text file to the sender when it receives any message, while a TFILE: alias returns a formatted message using a template file.
To create a FILE: or TFILE: alias, enter the alias as normal, but for the real world address enter either TFILE: or FILE: followed immediately by the path to the file you want to use.
Examples:
info = FILE:\\myserver\sys\system\mercury\info.txt
faqs = TFILE:r:\system\mercury\faq.mer

If you want the autoresponder to be domain specific use the full address, otherwise 'help' will do. Backslashes are required in path.

Understood, by trial and error I found that I had a space between FILE: and the filename.

This method also does not seem to work if the alias exists as a user.

If I want to use 'simple auto replies', so that incoming mail is auto responded to as well as being received by the user, the help says to put a file called areply.pm into the user's 'new mail subdirectory'.

Which directory is this? Is it mercury/mail/username? If so, that doesn't seem to work.

thanks

Right, autoresponders require an address of their own, it can't be the same as a mailbox address.

The AREPLY.PM file should be placed in the mailbox directory for the user as indicated by the "Local mailbox directory" setting in core configuration.  Make sure that "Suppress automatic replies system-wide" isn't checked though (core configuration, Advanced).
