Very slow performance

I changed the Windows default printer to a PDF printer, rebooted, but still have delays in Pegasus Mail. What next can I do or try? Thanks.

I changed the Windows default printer to a PDF printer, rebooted, but still have delays in Pegasus Mail. What next can I do or try? Thanks.

I am using Win 7 64-bit Professional and over the last month or two have had terrible performance problems with Pegasus Mail. When I download, I don't mind having some delay, but it's to the point that when I am even typing an email, typically after half a minute or minute or so I get a Windows busy icon that spins for it seems a minute or more. It is not reproducible; sometimes it happens every 30-60s, sometimes it happens ever few minutes. I changed my time period to check email to every 5m (300s) and cleaned out all lines in D:\Mail\HIERARCH.PM that have Name_Unavailable in them (there were dozens!). I've tried moving all folders from the New Mail Folder to another folder, and that speeds bringing Pegasus Mail up, but nothing that I do changes the busy spinning icon. I just went to the Pegasus Mail Information window to copy and paste my system information below, and am again in a wait cycle for, so far, about a minute. I'd love some suggestions to get back to normal usage of Pegasus Mail. Thanks!

I have performance issues even when Pegasus Mail is offline. It is in offline mode now but when I went to open a message (not in the New Mail folder - but this happens there, too) or delete a message in a folder, I get a spin of waiting. Eeks!

From my notes:

Causes for slowness in Pegasus Mail response to opening messages, folders, etc.

In the Pegasus Mail menu Tools > Options > General settings > Advanced settings  ensure that the "Load Windows Internet Services" option is set to "Always"

Make sure you have a default printer in place and that it is accessible by the OS.  Pegasus Mail attempts to poll the default printer driver for font information.  If one is not installed it will cause delays.  Some printer drivers poll the printer itself in which the printer being turned off or not available (network printer not accessible) will cause the delays.

Also, the Info content you posted shows the offline option in use in the commandline.  You mentioned being in offline mode in your second post but not your first so I just wanted to call this to your attention.

Thanks. I do have that advanced setting set to "Always". The problem occurs whether I'm online or offline. I do have an attached printer that is available; it's connected via wireless. How can I check that Pegasus knows about that printer? I wonder if that's the issue - the printer is in a sort of lower power mode while waiting for jobs, but I do see it when I look at my system. Thanks.

I'd be surprised if it's the printer. The printer isn't new but the issue has become a big one recently with Pegasus' performance.

Probably not the printer if no changes were made prior to the start of the problem.

If the problem is only during downloads are you doing any server side filtering or new mail filtering?

The problem is all the time - during downloads, when online, when offline, when using the New Mail folder, when using other folders, etc., alas.

In this case I would definitively rule out the printer by installing a generic text printer as the default printer.  Start Pegasus Mail after installing the printer and test for any performance improvement.

Do I install a new printer via Windows? THrough Pegasus Mail? I do have a PDF printer installed.

It would be a windows printer that you would install.

I don't know whether setting the pdf printer as the default printer would be a valid test but is easy enough to try to see if it makes a difference.
