I have been using Pegasus for many years now but have run into a problem downloading new mail since I installed the latest versio of Pegasus under Win 4.72

 The "About" states..

WinPMail version: Version 4.72.572, Feb 19 2016, build ID 572
Language resources: Standard UK English resource set

When downloading new mail, it takes around 30 seconds to download 1 x 79K e-mail.In the past, new e-mails would rattle down at a very fast rate. I have tried re-installing over my original vesion but has not helped. Has anybody any suggestions?

Do you have "Load Windows Services" set to ALWAYS in Pegasus Mail menu Tools/Options/General Settings/Advanced ?

Hi Martinm

Yes I do have it set to "Yes".

I realised that my original note mauy have been misleading. It takes a long time to down load EACH e-mail, not just one specific e-mail.

Do you have Content Control turned on to do Spam checking?

How many emails do you have in your New Mail directory.?

Martin

1. Content Control is turned OFF for Spam checking

2. At present I have 32 e-mails in my new mail directory.Have have two machines that look at my e-mail. My desktop in my office and my laptop at home. My desktop causes NO problems, it is the laptop which is casuing download problems. Both are running Win 10 and, I think, both are on the latest version of Pegasus but I can check that when I go to the office. Because of the way that I run things, I leave mail ON the server from my laptop after downloading but remove it from the server automatically after downloading to my desk top. I have some 300 e-mails on my desktop!

If you are using Bearhtml to render html and fetch remote graphics, you should check your Bearhtml.log, where you may find the individual messages have an elapsed time recorded. One or more may have an excessive elapsed time.   You should also check your inbox (NewMail directory) for any really large message sizes. Messages in this directory get read each time you open your newmail.  Things like large video or photo collections can cause this.  If so move these messages to a normal folder and try opening your new mail again.  P.S, I believe I.E Renderer has similar features.

Thank you Martin but I do  not kow what Bearhtml is. I do use IE Renderer. Removing it made no difference. I cannot find any suitable log file but when I down load mail, each one takes around 10-15 secs. The average file size is around 32k with some as lowas 3.4 k. I have also erased my newmail entries and re-loaded. It makes no difference.

I am beginning to suspect a Win10 problems as my pmai was working OK until|I loaded Win10. It isstill working OK after loading Win10 on my othe two systems.

I am contemplating removing pmail completely from my system and then re-loading from scratch unless you have any other advice. Thank you anyway for the adice you have aready given me. I guess I have been using PMail since around 1992 and this is te first time I have had any poblems. With pmail that is, NOT the case with Microsoft though!!!!

My last suggestion to you is to install the default ASCII printer, to avoid loading the vendor print drivers for every email.

Martin

Thankyou for trying to help, Martin. I must confess I do not know how to get standard ASCII print drivers. I have, however, removed all the Pmail software and re-istalled it to no avaiil. I did notice that having done this, my mail was still available so I am not sure if II did completely remove it despite control panel saying it had!!

I really do not know what to do next other than load the e-mails using Webmail or, of course, use my desk top system that does work well. Many thanks for your interest.

Tony,

An uninstall does not remove the mail or the existing configuration files.  A new install will detect and use these if they exist which is what you have experienced.  If you would like to test a clean install without losing any of your existing mail and settings follow these steps:

1.  Make a safety backup copy of the entire PMAIL directory including all subdirectories and files.  The default is C:\PMAIL so I assume that in the remaining steps.

2.  With Pegasus Mail closed, rename C:\PMAIL to C:\PMAIL_SAVED.  Do not run Pegasus Mail from this location because it will create unwanted registry entries.

3.  Install Pegasus Mail to its default location of C:\PMAIL

4.  Configure it just enough to test.  Keep all downloaded mail in the new mail folder for now to make retrieval easy if you need to restore the old instance.

5.  If then download performance is better you can finish configuring it and then copy the data from your old mailbox.  DO NOT copy all files from your old mailbox directory because you want to insure that only data comes over and not any of the configuration files that are stored in the mailbox directory.  A white paper on what files to copy can be downloaded from the downloads section of this community site.  Here is the URL:  http://community.pmail.com/files/folders/whitepapers/entry41852.aspx

If the test instance did not solve the problem then you can return to the old instance by closing Pegasus Mail, renaming C:\PMAIL to C:\PMAIL_TEST, then renaming C:\PMAIL_SAVED to C:\PMAIL.  Delete C:\PMAIL_TEST once you confirm Pegasus Mail is functioning as it was before.  To copy the messages from the test install mailbox to the old mailbox simply copy the *.CNM files from C:\PMAIL_TEST\MAIL\ADMIN to the restored mailbox directory (default of C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN).

See here, it's pretty easy.

Thank you Brian. In starting to carry out your suggestion I noted your comment about the configuration files NOT being erased if I do a removal using Control Panel.

Because of the unusual way that I use Pmail, I do not need to save my files on the system that is causing the problem (my laptop) so I will just try re-removing Pmail under control panel and then erasing the the PMAIL directory completely to ensure that I have no config files left unless, of course, you advise that this is not the correct way to go!

Many thanks for your help.

The purpose of my suggestion is to provide an easy way to check to see if a problem is related to a system or to Pegasus Mail using a test clean install that can be discarded if the problem is determined not to be with Pegasus Mail.  If you don't need the existing install then deleting the entire \PMAIL directory will result in a clean new installation assuming the mailbox directories are inside of the \PMAIL directory.

OK Brian,

I have removed all the PMAIL details, I hope, and then re-installed. I have downloaded the two outstanding mails on my server 1 x 12k and 1 x 1.1m and it took a total of 15 secs to download. My broadband speed is circa 50Mb/sec I am coming to the conclusion that I must have a problem in Win 10.

Not quite sure what to do next. Thank you for your interest however.

At least you now know that the problem is not related to Pegasus Mail.  Unfortunately, I don't have a clue how you would go about troubleshooting Win10 or any of the components involved in the process beyond reboots.
