Pegasus downloaded all my mail to my hard drive!

Brian:

Those emails appear to be gone. Not sure where but they are not on the Telus server and the only folders I see in Pegasus mail are:

New mail

Copies to self

Recent Search Results

Junk or Suspicious mail

Main Folder

The only folders with mail in them are New Mail folder and copies to self.

I should have read up on Pegasus thoroughly before doing anything but had no idea that when I hit the "Check your POP3 host for new mail" that the program would download and delete from the server. I had not set anything up so that is the way it installed.

All in all  I have not lost anything terribly important but it is a little disturbing to have that happen. Again, I should have read up on settings and made sure the program was set up right to do what I wanted. So my own fault.

I'll see what I can do to get the rest of the email back to the Telus server.

Thanks for your help.

New user here.

I just downloaded and installed Pegasus and when I first started it up it downloaded all my e-mail from my Telus webmail inbox and left me with an empty Telus inbox and all the mail stored on my hard drive.

This is not what I expected and I was not given any choices as to what happened before it happened. I had expected it to copy the e-mail not remove it from the Telus inbox. Is there a way to export the mail back to the Telus inbox?

I have looked but so far not found any way to restore the mail to the Telus inbox other than to forward each message.

If I do not want to keep using Pegasus how do I get my e-mails back?

Is there a way to export all the e-mail messages back to Telus webmail?

I would appreciate any help or advice that is offered here.

Thanks.

I hate this happed to you.  The primary configuration setting that controls this is called "Delete mail from host once it has been successfully retrieved".  It is in the "General" tab of the POP3 host configuation.  There is also one in the "Download controls" tab but it is associated with server side filtering so I suspect it's not relevant to your situation.

Create an IMAP connection to your Telus mailbox.  Once connected you will see it at the bottom of the Pegasus Mail folder list as another mailbox.  You can copy messages to the IMAP folder(s) as needed.  This puts them back in the mailbox on the Telus server.  I suggest copying instead of moving the message to keep the messages intact until you are certain you have them back on the Telus server.  IMAP configurations are in Tools > IMAP Profiles.

I hope you don't completely give up on Pegasus Mail.  It is an extremely powerful and flexible email client with a strong support family here.  Consider creating a new post containing details about what you want to accomplish and how you want to use Pegasus Mail.  It should start a discussion leading to valuable advice and suggestions.

Thanks Brian I'll give that a try.

Most of the e-mail is not critical but I am now working at home and some e-mails are work e-mails so I want to keep them on the Telus server not on my hard drive. At least I think they are safer there than on my hard drive.

I had a melt down after downloading Windows 10 ~ my PC locked up and would not do anything except allow me to open the command line so I wound up formatting c then starting over. I had Windows Live Mail before and didn't really like it so did some checking and found a couple of e-mail clients along with Pegasus so decided to try them. I installed Opera Mail and it seems okay but is the opposite of what I found with Pegasus mail in that it simply copies the e-mails, which is fine, but it does not delete from the server when I delete in Opera mail so I have to go back to Telus mail to do the deleting. Possibly there is a setting to get it to delete from the server but I have not found it. So I decided to try Pegasus mail as it got very good reviews.

It was a bit of a surprise when it downloaded my entire in-box and deleted all the e-mails from the Telus mailbox. I think I hit the download new mail button but I had not changed any settings so it is a little odd to me that a default setting would be to download and delete mail from the server. In any case, I'll do some reading and see if I can sort out settings so that I can set Pegasus up the way I want.

Also, I will follow your advice to get my e-mails back to the Telus mail box.

Thanks for that.

Brian:

Thanks for that. I will give it a go. I would like to have the e-mail back on the server.

I posted a reply earlier so won't repeat it but I do not see it here so not sure what went on.

Another question though. Should I have set up as IMAP.Telus.net rather than POP.Telus.net? I had set up the Opera mail as POP.Telus.net and it does not delete from the server. However, Pegasus did.

I have not set up an e-mail client like this before so have no clue.

Thanks,

Kent

Sometimes messages are delayed pending moderator review which is probably what happened to yours.

As for POP3 vs. IMAP, that is a personal preference.  POP3 downloads messages whereas IMAP simply accesses them on the Telus server.  IMAP is gaining in popularity because it allows access to the same mailstore from multiple devices.  An internet connection is required to access messages and it takes extra effort to maintain local copies if you want them.  With POP3 configured correctly you can download messages but still leave a copy on the server, the best of both worlds, IMHO.   As I stated in my first response, the only reason Pegasas Mail deleted messages from the server is because it was configured to do so.

Okay then I'll do some reading and figure out how to configure it so it does not delete from the server. IMAP may be the way to go because I want to keep everything on the server.

Thanks again.

Brian:

Right you are! I found the tick box for deleting from the server after downloading and un-ticked it so should be good that way now. Now to try the IMAP connection and try to get my mail back where I want it.

On an unrelated note, where are you in North Carolina? I have an internet buddy in Vilas and had a very good friend from Boone. Also the family an I have vacationed in the Outer Banks 3 times now and plan to go back. My brother in-law who now lives in Maryland was raised in Swan Quarter, N.C. Totally unrelated to my email problems but I am curious.

Thanks,

Kent

Brian or anyone else who can answer:

I still haven't sorted all this out yet but did notice that the downloaded mail has a three year gap in it. I had mail on the Telus server going back at least to 2013 but what downloaded goes back from August 2016 to April 2016 then jumps to July 2013 with no 2014 or 2015 mail so part of 2016 and at least two full years of mail has disappeared ~ not on the Telus server anymore and not in Pegasus mail.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Kent

I don't know what might have happened to those messages.  If the messages that were downloaded have been moved out of the new mail list to a folder you can try reindexing that folder.  If you haven't backed up your Pegasus Mail mailbox I suggest doing so before doing anything else.   If the reindex helps, back it up again to preserve the downloaded messages as you move forward trying to get them back on the Telus server.
