Can't connect to Fastmail IMAP server.

WORKING!, in a workaround sort of way.

There were two problems:

1.  As you said, there was a problem with the username.  It was in the format "user", but in PM it wanted "user@domain.com".  The fastmail people checked this on a screenshot, and didn't catch it.

2.  There also seems to be an SSL problem:  They told me to try "insecuressl.messagingengine.com" instead of one of their normal servers, such as "imap.fastmail.com".  "insecuressl" uses an older version of SSL.

With the two changes together it started working, though neither alone worked.

Thanks a lot, everyone!

Hi!

I have a trial account on Fastmail.

I am running Pegasus Mail 4.63 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

When I try to connect, I get a generic failure-to-connect message starting: "The IMAP server that manages this mailbox or folder has reported an error..."

IMAP on my Pegasus Mail works with many other accounts and servers, and I have checked the port, app password, SSL/TLS setting, etc. IMAP works fine with my fastmail account on Thunderbird.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

C.

A session log should provide a clue into the point of failure.  Enable "Internet session logging" located at the bottom of the General tab of Tools > Internet options.  Read the help file about session logging for more info.  Do not post the log content without first obscuring the login credentials which are logged in plain text.  Log files are created in a directory named TCPLogs located in the home mailbox directory.

Don't forget to turn logging off when done troubleshooting.

OK, here's the whole log:

It's very likely that updating to the latest Pegasus Mail version fixes your issue since SSL/TLS handling has been significantly changed since 4.63.

You need at least Pegasus Mail v4.70 or later.  The SSL in v4.63 is about obsolete which I believe is what is causing your problem.  There have been a number of fixes since v4.70 so I suggest downloading and installing v4.72.  Find it at www.pmail.com.

From what I've read here, I don't really trust the newer versions.  Will I be able to set it up to be completey independent, including independent mailboxes?

Thanks.

Yes.  Functionality and GUI are mostly unchanged.  SSL is updated.  Spellchecker functionality is updated.  HTML renderers and Spamhalter are updated.  Pegasus Mail version history is here: http://www.pmail.com/v47x.htm

The only negative experience some folks have with versions 4.7x is an apparent hang during TCP/IP activity.  I experience it and find it to be a minor annoyance but nothing more.  If you experience it, the key is to just breathe for a few seconds until Pegasus Mail finishes doing whatever it is doing and to ignore the "Not Responding" verbiage that the operating systems tends to displays too quickly.

Installed it.  I get the same error screen.

Are you using the password for the web interface login, or are are you using an "App" password?

Sorry, just notice that you wrote that you are using an App password.

I do not have a problem with PMail 4.72, but I do use different OpenSSL libraries (1.0.2j) that I build.

Also, on the Security tab of the IMAP profile is the option "Use only SSLv3...".  Make sure it is not ticked.

It is not checked.

The Fastmail people also think that it's an SSL problem.  Is there a build of PM with an even newer SSL than in PM 4.72?

Thanks.

Nope. Can we please get a detailed log of this issue so it can be forwarded to David Harris for his comment?

I already posted it above, but I'll copy it to here because I don't know how to make a link to an individual message here.

That's all there is.  It's very short because it just refuses to connect and shows me the error screen.  That one's from PM 4.63, maybe later I'll post one from PM 4.72.

Thanks again.

I just tried to make one, the same way I did it yesterday in 4.63, but in 4.72 I couldn't even make a log.

I ran PM 4.72, opened Tools|Internet Mail Options, checked Create Internet Session Logs, attempted to connect to the Fastmail IMAP server, closed the error window, closed PM, and looked for some new file in the PM4.72 directory, preferably a csv.

There was nothing there.  How do I make a log?

Thanks.

The log will be in a directory named TCPlogs located in the home mailbox directory.

Yup, that's where they are.
