Copying Pmail directory to a new copy of windows xp

Thanks Brian, that appears to have worked perfectly. I am always shy of anything that involves the registry.

Ian.

Hello, last time I tried this, I just copied my entire Pmail directory over to my new C:\ and then tried to run winpm-32.exe

I got a confusing message about passwords and I didnt get round to taking things further. Now I have to do it for real

on a new laptop, clean version of XP. What is the right way of going about this? Im using Pmail version 4.71

I have a large number of different e-mail accounts, mail filters, directories, addresses and mail from over

the years, I will never be able to build it up again from scratch.

Ian.

The process is dependent on the installation of Pegasus Mail that you want to duplicate on the new machine.  The best thing to do is to start up that instance then go to Help > About Pegasus Mail and click the Info button.  Copy and paste the content of that display into a reply.  I will contain what we need to provide specific advice.

Ok, I assume you mean the Pmail on the old machine. Here we go.

Perfect.  You have an easy one.

  • On the new machine, run the Pegasus Mail installer and install it to C:\PMAIL.  Don't worry about doing any configuration.
  • Replace the entire content of C:\PMAIL on the new machine with the content copied from the old machine.  Don't just overwrite.  Rename C:\PMAIL to something else then put the copy in its place.  You can delete the renamed directory once everything is working.
  • Confirm that the shortcut on the new machine matches the shortcut on the old machine.  If it doesn't, edit it to match

That should do it.  Keep a copy of the entire C:\PMAIL directory from the old machine until you have the new one working correctly.

The goal is to insure that the content of C:\PMAIL from the old machine ends up in C:\PMAIL on the new machine.  The purpose of running the install routine is to create the registry entries and shortcuts that wouldn't exist if you copied without running the installer.

Could you not just use PMCONFIG on the new machine? WinXP is 32 bits and runs the pmconfig without issue.

I don't see what running PCONFIG would accomplish.  It sets the path to the mailbox directory but that is not needed when copying an existing install to the identical path on a different machine.
