Deleted messages folder contains emails that were deleted from it long ago

Brian, many thanks for the explanation. After many years of using Pegasus, I am learning new things about it! In effect, it has had almost a Recycle Bin longer than Windows!

The Deleted Messages folder had (as seen in Windows Explorer) grown to 33 MB. I deleted  many really old emails from it, and re-indexed. This reduced it to 9 MB. Within a day or so, it again contained many really old messages. It was back to 33 MB.

I have read in another thread that when you empty a folder, right-click and choose  Recover deleted space. But my situation is different: I do want to keep recently deleted messages.

How can I resolve my problem?

Deleting messages makes them disappear but a record of them can remain.  The reindex function sees those records and includes them in its processing (brings the messages back).   OTOH, the "recover deleted space' function removes the records of the deleted messages.  It can be run on any folder after deleting messages, not just empty ones.  You can test this by making a safety copy of the messages you

want to keep followed by doing message deletions then

running the 'recover deleted space' function.  A subsequent reindex will

not bring the deleted messages back.  There shouldn't be a reason to

reindex though.
