Hi Guys;

Long time user here but one with limited or no knowledge of the "tech" side of things.

3 days ago, I attempted to send an email with a 300mb attachment, the email was not delivered but since then, I was getting the "not responding" error message on start up. I decided to download V 4.7 but the same is happening

The programme starts with all the folders and the user interface but no emails showing. I have downloaded v4.7, the information box asks if I want to see whats new in this version and as soon as I click anywhere in the box, I get the error message box stating that Pegasus mail V4.7 is Not Responding.

 Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated, please treat me gently, I am not a "Techie"

Many thanks

It is highly likely that your ISP has refused to handle such a large attachment. Typically the limit is around 20-30Mbs which can cope with things like photo albums. Remember that the transmission will likely need to be converted to Mime Base64 format, which automatically increases the size of transmission by at least one third.

Your solution is probably to use another tool such as FTP, which has no such limits, or to check with the recipient if they have a web server that you can upload to

My suspicion is that the large message was never successfully sent so was queued for resending which Pegasus Mail is attempting to do at each startup.  You will need to locate this message file (could be two files) and move it out of the mailbox directory.  To do this, use a file explorer to navigate to your home mailbox directory (C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN is most common) and search or look for a file (or files) with any of the following extensions.  Move any that you find out of the mailbox directory.

  • .PMO
  • .PMW
  • .PMX
  • .PNX  (Note:  if you find a .PNX file there should be a corresponding .PMO, .PMW, or .PMX file).

Once done, start Pegasus Mail and see if that has solved the problem

FWIW #1, "not responding" can appear when Pegasus Mail is hung but it can also appear when Pegasus Mail is busy.  Usually the "not responding" disappears within a few seconds but I would give it 10 minutes before assuming Pegasus Mail is hung.

FWIW #2, a reinstall or upgrade of Pegasus Mail rarely fixes a problem because most problems are associated with files that aren't touched (eg: data files, configuration files).

Hi Brian,

I have checked the C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN folder none of these files exist.  I am still getting the "not responding" error message.

Many thanks

On to the next thing....

When Pegasus Mail starts up it populates the new mail folder by processing all new mail files.  A new mail file is not necessarily associated with a message that just arrived.  Every message in the new mail folder is an individual file, a "new mail" file.  These files have a .CNM extension.  A corrupted or zero byte new mail file might be causing the problem.

The first step is to use a file explorer to look in the mailbox directory for any zero byte .CNM files.  Delete any that are found then try starting Pegasus Mail.

If that's not it, you'll need to move all of the .CNM files out of the mailbox directory.  If you keep a large number of messages in your new mail folder, start by moving out just the .CNM files date stamped after the problem began, then trya startup.  If it still hangs, move them all out then attempt a startup.

A successful startup indicates a problem with one of the moved .CNM files.  The only way to identify the specific one is by moving small blocks of them back at a time, testing between each move until you have failure, and then narrowing it down to a specific file within that block of files.  This can take a bit of planning and record keeping if you have a large number of new message files.

Good luck!

Hi Brian;

A check of File Explorer produced no .CNM files with zero bytes, however it did show a 459kb file generated on the date that the issue arose first.

With fingers crossed, this particular .CNM file was removed, the programme re-started and Bingo.... I am back up and running

 My I express my genuine appreciation for your time, knowledge & assistance in sorting out this issue for me. I reckon I have been using PMail for over 30 years now and seldom if ever have I had any issues

Once again, my sincerest gratitude for you time and help

Hello,   Did you move the large message or delete it?  If you moved it somewhere outside Pegasus Mail, it would be really appreciated if we could get a copy of it to examine it for the problem it caused.

Hi Martin;

I deleted it and its still in my bin, but on checking it just now I note that it is 438MB in size,  I am assuming that this was the issue size-wise?

I have a screen shot of the file details that I can send you, although I am not sure if that will help

 Failing that, if you send me your email address, I can send it to you via WeTransfer

 Thanks

 Michael

Hello,   Thank you for the info. No need to send us the message. The size is almost certainly the cause.  Please advise the sender of the size limit for most email services, and suggest he/she provides a browser site Url where you can view or pickup/download the file.

Regards,

      Martin
