Assistance and guidance request

Ralph,

I don't think the info content will be helpful at this point because your problem my be that configuration files have been copied from the XP install.  The info content could all look fine but a copied configuration file could be what is causing problems.

If I were you, I would start with the Win7 machine, take the existing install out of the picture by deleting or renaming c:\pmail, then do a clean install to c:\pmail, multi-user (leaving Admin and adding Ralph (make sure to enable Administrator privileges)).  Now copy just data files from the old Ralph mailbox directory to the new one (use the guide).  Do the same for Admin if you think you need to. No files should be overwritten during the data copy phase.  If you encounter one, stop and research the file.

There is another guide that you might find valuable.  It's Han's guide to filenames and extensions.  http://www.vandenbogaerde.net then follow the Pegasus Mail information link to the Filenames and extension link.

Once you get it all setup and working you can easily duplicate it on the Win10 box.  Copy the entire c:\pmail directory to c:\pmail on the Win10 box.  Manually execute c:\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe to start Pegasus Mail then shut it back down.  This will create a registry entry recording the Pegasus Mail program location.  Now run the Pegasus Mail v4.72 installer.  It will look at the registry entry and default to installing to that location, probably as an upgrade.  Let it run.  This will "install" Pegasus Mail, creating needed registry entries, menu items, and shortcuts. That should be it except for any configuration differences you wish to make.

Greetings All,

I am still experiencing a problem trying to put PM on two 'new' computers.  One is Win7 and the other is Win10.  The situation is that I want to be able to import all of the prior messages and directories from the WinXP system to the other systems.  I made copies of the prior PM 4.72 MAIL folder - to include both the Admin and the 'home' directory that I used for all the received messages.  I have installed PM 4.72 on both machines, but getting the prior data to integrate into the Mail folder is causing headaches.  I was able to get the 'home' directory to copy into the Mail folder on the Win7 machine, but I am having problems getting the old ADMIN files to import properly.  I thought at one time we had an import integration program that would help with this situation.  Once I have the Win7 system behaving well,  I will use the same process for the Win10 machine.  PS.  the 'home' directory is named KG4CSQ.  Could I have a problem with the PM.ini file that needs resolving on both machines?

Thank You.

I believe my earlier advise still applies with emphasis on the fact that when you copy data between mailboxes of different installation it is imperative that only data files be copied.  That is the purpose of the guide I pointed you to.

If you are open to starting over and if your pmail installation on the XP machine still works, I might be able to offer specific advise.  To pursue this further it will be important to know the path to the home and new mailbox locations of the XP install.  Get this information from the Info button located in Help > About Pegasus Mail so that we are working with the exact paths that Pegasus Mail is working with.

Thank you Brian,  Okay I went and checked out that material and I see the problem ( I think).  Can I send you a copy of that 'file' via email for your review?  I also see that the PMail.usr file is skewed on the newest version.  How would I correct the minor errors in the program environment?

All the older files are on D:\PMAIL\MAIL\KG4CSQ       The .usr file in the older version is A;Admin;Mail Admin  A;KG4CSQ;Ralph

Ralph B.

PS. I think that I should delete the PMAIL directory on my C: drive - that would keep the D: material as the only locus.  Oh, I can send emails - but I held up downloading my emails from the ISP until I can properly sort them into the right folders within PM.

Unfortunately, the old installation being on D: prevents an easy copy of it to C: on the other machines.  Copying data files from the old intall is the only option.

The .usr file in the old intall indicates a multi-user installation.

A;Admin;Mail Admin = Mailbox directory: Admin, Username: Mail Admin

A;KG4CSQ;Ralph = Mailbox directory: KG4CSQ, Username: Ralph

It's not a requirement to duplicate this user setup on the new installs because copying data files from a different install is not mailbox directory specific but adding the user "Ralph" may make things more logical.

Also, you may have never used the Admin mailbox so it may not contain anything worth copying to the new installs.

Brian,

Aha - very true, all the email folders are under KG4CSQ.  Also there are two separate versions of 4.72 on this machine - the one from the XP OS is on D: - it has all the files, etc.

I just need to point the program back to that setup.  Now the Win7 machineis slightly different in that it was a totally straight install - just want to have similar setup.  Do I actually need the Admin line in PM.usr?

I would very much still like to send you the info contents for evaluation.  The Win10 machine uses the same HD from XP OS, we just added an SSD as C: ;  the MB was getting old and acting up,  so we just replaced it and added an SSD and installed Win10 on the SSD and deleted XP Pro from the system.
