POP Problem with Verizon/AOL

Make sure your timeout of 200 is set in the General tab of Internet Options with 0 timeout set it each host configuration

OR

have a timeout of 200 set in each host configuration (this setting overrides the one in the General tab)

Using V4.72

I have never taken the time to get the Verizon SMTP issue fixed, I just switched to another SMTP option. I've seen some nifty STunnel options, but didn't think it was important enough to go through the whole procedure for my needs.

Since AOL took over Verizon's email service, I can't even get the POP to work. I can see my verizon.net email when I go to my website based AOL page, can't get it to download using Pegasus.

I've tried everything that I could think of.....any suggestions?

thnx

Turn on session logging in Tools | Internet options and see what error message you are getting.

The log files are in your mail folder.(TCP log)

If you post the log remove your username and password. These might be Base64 encoded, but can be decided easily.

It looks like the POP3 connection is being made via plain text Id and password in the example that worked. Also no port was being made, so it would be port 110 with plain text Id and password. Does that work, if not you need to create TCP.LOG file to see which part of the connection process broke

As of 4/8/18, here's what Verizon (AOL) is suggesting for settings:

Protocol Server Settings

POP 3

Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.net
Port Settings POP3-995-SSL

Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net
Port Settings SMTP-465-SSL

How would I create a TCP.LOG file ?

Can you confirm that in your internet settings you have set port 995 and on the security page checked direct ssl?

I used to have it set for 60 seconds and it never connected, so I shortened it to avoid wasting so much time waiting for the "problem" message.

The log suggests something external is impacting upon the connection. Do you have anything running such as a firewall or av program that might be the culprit?

I agree with caisson. I appears that something is blocking the password from reaching the Verizon server. A send attempt is made but 10 seconds pass without a response so the connection times out.

I just added Pegasus to be allowed to pass thru the Windows firewall without any change.

No idea what else could be causing this. I routinely check mail from 4 or 5 other email servers without any problems.

Although I use Verizon as my ISP, I try not to use my verizon.net email address because of this problem, so I suppose I can live with this and just check the AOL website occasionally to see if there's any mail sitting there, although that seems a little silly.

Thanks for trying!!!

Did you log the test with the timeout set at 120?

I ask because in my last post I commented that I agreed with caisson that something was blocking transmission but I failed to register the fact that the username transmitted. It doesn't make sense that something would block just the password. So now I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the password and the 10 second timeout doesn't allow for an invalid password response. Ten seconds seems like plenty of time but when grasping at straws...

Heck, multiple tries with an invalid password might result in a temporarily block.

OK, here's the error log when I set the time-out for 120 seconds:

23:20:19.830: --- 16 Apr 2018, 23:20:19.830 --- 23:20:19.830: Connect to 'pop.verizon.net', timeout 120 seconds. 23:20:20.980: [*] SSL/TLS session established 23:20:20.980: [*] ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384, TLSv1.2, Kx=ECDH, Au=RSA, Enc=AESGCM(256), Mac=AEAD 23:20:20.980: [*] Peer's certificate name is '/C=US/ST=CA/L=Sunnyvale/O=Yahoo! Just for the heck of it, I changed the password to see if that might fix this. As usual, I can check my email on the web with this new password, but I still get:

Try changing your username to include the domain part (eg: username(at)verizon.net).

Notice the one minute delay before -ERR response. You might want to keep the timeout at 120 while testing.

That did it!!1

What's really strange is that I tried that last week, without success.

Maybe the fact that I changed the username this morning AND the password to a shorter password yesterday is what fixed it?

Thanks to everyone who tried to help!
