Moving Peg to new PC

Getting sendto to work requires getting the system default programs and protocols set appropriately.  Pegasus Mail needs to be the default mailer and the MAILTO protocol needs to be associated with the Pegasus Mail WSENDTO utility.  The run of the installer is what creates the registry entries that makes this possible.

The data on my old PC is located at c:\data\pegasus. This is what shows up on Help > About > Info as the Home Mailbox Location and the New Mailbox Location. I'd like to set up this same location on the new PC prior to moving over all the files.

On the old PC, Tools > Options > Mailbox Location shows up as <Default> even though it's not in the usual location of \pmail\mail\admin. It's been many years since I moved the files to \data\pegasus - can't remember exactly what I did to accomplish that, so I'm not sure what to do on the new PC to match it. Can someone offer a step-by step? Thanks!

One other piece of information is needed.  Where does the Pegasus Mail programs directory reside on the old PC (where the winpm-32.exe file is)?

Oops, knew I left something out - winpm-32.exe resides at c:\pegasus\programs

There's a pmail.ini file at c:\pegasus\mail\admin that points to c:\data\pegasus as the home mailbox location. It also points to a defunct email address as the default reply-to and internet address - this address appears nowhere in the current Peg options.

In addition, there is a pmail.ini file at c:\data\pegasus - it specifies the correct email address, while the home mailbox location is blank. And there is another pmail.ini at c:\data\pegasus\newmail which points to the defunct email address and a defunct home mailbox location from many years ago.

Other than that, this is a clean installation. :)

But everything seems to work fine.

Here's what I would try:

Install Pegasus Mail to c:\pegasus\programs as a multi-user install.  Tell it you want the mailboxes in c:\data.

Create a Pegasus Mail user named "pegasus"; don't worry about doing any configuration

Verify that the programs are in c:\pegasus\programs and that there is a c:\data\pegasus mailbox directory

Replace the entire c:\data\pegasus directory with the one from the old PC.

That should do it.

Alternatively, if you wanted a more normal install, there is a whitepaper in the downloads area of this site that lists the data files to copy to a new system.  That's a little misleading.  It actually helps you copy the mailbox data from an existing mailbox to one on a new system located with a different path.  I prefer this route because you'll have a clean install while maintaining your old data.  The trade-off is that it requires more time and effort.  It doesn't maintain any of the configuration settings so consider using the existing pmail.ini file as a guide. You would use the one in c:\data\pegasus.

Thanks Brian, appreciate your taking the time to explain this. I decided to try something before going down this road. Amended the pmail.ini file in c:\Peg - changed Home Mailbox Loc and Working Mailbox Loc to c:\data\Peg. The New Mailbox Loc remains c:\Peg\Mail\Admin. Copied the entire c:\data\Peg folder to the new PC and it seems to be working fine so far. The home mailbox directory now shows up as c:\data\Peg instead of <Default>

Having two problems which would appear to be unrelated. One is the "invalid address" problem we're discussing in another thread. The other is a delay in processing the Delete key - I ran into this many years ago, and then it somehow just went away. But now it's back, a 1-3 second delay each time I delete a message. I think there have been several previous threads on this issue, not sure if it's ever been resolved.

I don't know if the temporary file location plays a role in deletes but its path is stored in the .ini file so is something to check.

If you haven't run the installer on the new PC you'll want to do that so the reg keys are created that allow for Pmail to be set as the default mailer and be associated with the mailto protocol if you want sendto links to work with it.

Thanks Brian. I ran the installer - but in all the years I've been using Peg, sendto has never seemed to work properly, so I pretty much ignore it and just copy/paste addresses.
