Moving Pegasus from v4.21C WIN98 to new install/new version WIN7

Thanks for the reply. that file is WINPMFUA.PM in the mail directory. I specifically did not copy that when moving to the new machine. I figured it would just make a new one. And it has made a new one, with the 5 or 6 addresses I have used in the last couple of days. I deleted it. No change.

As for XP - it does say on the Versions page that the current version is for XP and later Windows. I wonder if I might need to get an older version?

I might need some help -

tomorrow I plan to fire up my new Dell refurb with WIN7 and hopefully connect to internet OK and download current pegasus and install that.

then I need to move over my mail from the past 10 or 12 or 18 years to the new machine.

old Pegasus install on WIN98 is version 4.21c

I wonder I if just need to copy PMM/PMI and CNM files to MAIL directory and that's that? (and maybe WINPMFUA.PM)

this is what I will be trying unless I have some warnings about whatever issues....

just mainly hoping everything is compatible from old to new Pegasus

What I always do in such situation, is copying all files from the folder set in PMAIL.CFG (which is where the winpm-32.exe program is located) to the new location. Besides PMM/PMI/CNM, there are also PM and other files, providing the folder tree, server receive/send settings etc.

I do that since 2.something so I wouldn't expect any troubles.

Copy your current Pegasus install over to new PC, (to the same location if possible) run it once, just to check it works, if it fails it fails, try pconfig.exe or pconfig32.exe to set the paths to match your new PC

Once it runs then tin teh new installer for 4.73 and choose upgrade

Then you "CAN" visit Hans page to see if any of your old files can be culled

OK - I'm back. I've been in computer hell for a couple of days. But I now have a new machine up and running. It is a refurb Dell Optiplex 980 from ebay.

I do a lot of text files, so I discovered that 64-bit WIN7 will not work for me (can not run 16-bit progs). Then installed WIN7 32-bit. More issues with working in DOS mode (although 32-bit can run older 16-bit progs, due to "Aero" features WIN7 does not support older video modes, even if Aero disabled. So for now, I have installed XP on this machine. Had to wrestle with Internet connection issues, but got that fixed.

I downloaded newest Pegasus and installed it.

Then I copied all my .CNM .PMM .PMI files saved from old machine to new PMAIL/MAIL

I was hoping Pegasus would just see them - but it does not.

I did not try "moving" old install of Pegasus over, since I figured that would not just be a matter of copying files, but that any windows program would have to be actually "installed".

So I wonder what I can do now?

More info -

New install of Peg ver 4.73.639 created

C:\PMAIL

C:\PMAIL\MAIL

C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

and C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS with some subdirs

C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN\PMAIL.INI -

shows

Personal name - (blank)

Home mailbox location = (blank)

 Internal username - Admin

Working home mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Admin

New Mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Admin

I editied pmail.ini and changed last 2 to c:\pmail\mail

no change, then found that pmail changed ini file back

then I moved a .PMI and .PMM pair to MAIL\ADMIN and that folder and its msgs all show up

good news!

but I am afraid to go much farther - as I have a COPYTOSELF folder and a MAIN and a NEW and a JUNK which might conflict with existing installed defaults. maybe I need to ge able to rename folders somewhere. maybe just change my PMM/PMI names?

but wy do I have to move everything into admin directory with existing installed stuff instead of just having my own /mail directory?

OK - figuring out a little more - found MAILBOX Location in GENERAL SETTINGS.

changed to c:\pmail\mail - went through that with MOVE contents box unchecked and then checked -

Now I have all my old folders and msgs showing up! This is GREAT!

BUT still not seeing my new msgs (there are a few hundred .CNM files in /MAIL). I find that PMAIL.INI says

"New mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Admin"

still have not figured out how to change that.

I think you're doing it harder than necessary.

There are several ways how to migrate to a new computer, this one might be perhaps the easiest for you:

1. Fresh installation of Pegasus Mail (select whichever place you want).

2. During the first run, configure the mailbox folder and set the location of your mailbox, then exit Pegasus. Alternatively, if the path to your mailbox is the same as before and you are happy with

that in the new installation too, instead of running Pegasus now you can copy the

PMAIL.CFG from the Program folder of your old installation to the adequate place in your new

installation.

3. Copy everything from the old installation mailbox folder to the folder you have set in step 2 (or the same path as in the old installation if you took the alternative way). And I mean everything, not only CNM PMM PMI but also all other files there, including PMAIL.INI, all the PM, PMO, PMR, ... ... ... simply everything.

I am sure others will say the same, but you are making this much harder than it need be

Just copy your "WHOLE" old pegasus (and a copy of your short cut) put it in the same place on your new machine, check it all works

then upgrade to 4.73 (over the top) pegasus is very good at updating this way, I've done this thru more PC's and Pegasus versions than I care to remember, I also copy my existing Pegasus to ALL my machines (Windowz & Linux) and a few USB stick, the only change I make is, all other machines & USB's start in "OffLine mode" and "leave read mail on server"

This will only work properly if Pegasus Mail isn't installed into any kind of Windows \Programs\ directory since Windows Vista because Pegasus Mail needs write access to its folders which Windows won't permit without elevated access rights in its default setup.

I figured that it would always be better to reinstall or install new version in a new install of OS, rather than copy everything over since installing programs in Windows can be complicated.

Plus I figured that Pegasus has standards for their msg data which make those files portable from version to version, which seems to be the case.

Everything now working fine EXCEPT -

I get an error msg and Peg has to close anytime I click on the button at the right of the address bar (or hit CTLT-SHFT-T)  to access previously used addressed.

This turns out to be a Windows Exception Error Code 0xc0000005

anyone know how I can fix this??

Go to Han's file name and extension list to figure out which one of Pegasus Mail's files keeps the addresses and either try to fix or delete it (it should be a simple plain text file).
