XP Exception error 0xc0000005

TLS:
also

in WIN 7 - several things I tried to do were very frustrating. there

were files I could no delete, things I could not make desktop icons for

since I did not have "administrator privileges"

This

is most likely a symptom of installing Pegasus Mail in either Windows

\Program Files\ or \Program Files (x86)\ directory. These ones ar

protected by Windows requiring elevated access rights for security

reasons. Since Pegasus Mail also writes to its directories you *must*

install in it into any place outside of these paths. Recommend would by a

subdirectory of \My Files\ (if this is its proper name in English)

which also will be backed up by Windows' own backup handling.

 -------

Sorry that my post was confusing there. I am not having any problems with Pegasus in WIN7. the problems with deleting files, etc are all just things I'm finding in WIN7 and have no relation to the Pegasus install or any of its files or directories. I'm just having a hard time getting into Windows 7 in general Very happy with Pegasus! and I appreciate the attention here. glad to see a helpful community here!

installed XP SP on blank drive

installed Peg ver 4.73 newly downloaded

moved .PMM, .PMI, .CNM files from older Peg install ver 4.21 which was on old WIN98 system

Pegaus now working fine - sees old msgs, folders, sends and receives email

BUT - if I click on the box at the right of the address bar (to pull up frequently used addresses) I get an error from Windows saying Pegasus has to close.

this turns out to be an Exception error 0xc0000005

looking into this a bit I found some advice:

I ran memtest86 to test RAM - tests good

I ran  Auslogic registry cleaner

I went to DeviceManager/Advanced/Performance - DEP and added exception for  Pegasus (winpm-32.exe)

still happens every time (also with CTL-SFT-T)

any ideas?

(I can provide the Windows error dump)

See my reply in your other thread ...

BTW: You might encounter other issues as well, Pegasus Mail (as well as MS) doesn't support Windows XP anymore.

You're asking for trouble using XP. How will you secure it? How will you find applications that will run on it *and* which are still supported and patched?

I'll get back to for this you once I get the proper PDB file from David Harris. The one I already have unfortunately doesn't match the most recent public Pegasus Mail build.

OK - I did decide to "move on" to Windows 7. blank drive, installed win7 pro 32-bit.

got it all running pretty quickly, after going through all this for many hours over the past week.

installed new pegasus. this time, did not let it make ADMIN account. copied all my mail - PMM PMI CNM - over to pmail\mail

everything works. so I'm good with pegasus in WIN7.

BUT - I AM HATING WINDOWS 7.

I work with plain text files every day for work and personal use of all kinds.

I import text into email, sometime invoices, I print text files, view them, edit them - every day -

VERY QUICKLY - using ancient DOS programs - my file manager Directory Freedom, my editor Sled and sometimes the old file viewer LIST.

I'm also using batch files. yes old .BAT files. such as to load a certain file into my editor or backup files to another drive.

all of this becomes incredibly tedious using any kind of windows programs.

I do keep 2 machines on my desk in front of me. one is running XP, upgraded 4 years ago from WIN2000.

and the old one with my text files and email was running WIN98. I used a dialup modem to get my email.

the other machine is online, previously with DSL.

So I do work with windows programs in a window environment everyday.

but I also need to work with text files.

I swtiched from DSL to "hyperlink" (Earthlink version of Uverse) so I could get rid of my landline as a first step towards moving to a cellphone.

this prompted me to upgrade the old machine where I get my email.

I got a Dell Optiplex 980 refurb on  ebay for $99. came with WIN7

I found that WIN7 64-bit will not run any DOS programs

all previous Windows have had a command prompt "DOS mode". win7 has this, but you cannot run any 16-bit programs.

so I switch to WIN7 32-bit - I found that you can maybe run DOS programs, but NOT in FULL SCREEN.

so I went to XP. besides the minor pegasus issue, I started to have other problems.

OK - so today its back to Windows 7. So like I said, Pegasus is working fine now. So that's good.

But I'm not having much luck finding windows file managers or text editors that are plain and simple and fast and easy to use.

actually thinking about going back to a WIN98 machine and keeping it offline. (but I kind of need email there)

anyway - just explaining why someone might need or want to run XP or older windows

contemplated checking into Linux - I note that Pegasus is not available for Linux.

hopefully I will find new ways to do what I need to do in WIN7.

As for the 0xc0000005 error, no need to pursue that one. I might still go back to XP, but probably would be on a different machine and with less complicated driver installs, etc,

thanks for the interest. sometimes you really need (or want) to fix some little thing.

also in WIN 7 - several things I tried to do were very frustrating. there were files I could no delete, things I could not make desktop icons for since I did not have "administrator privileges"

found the top secret way to log in as admin, but then had same problem with "privileges" since I am not "TrustedInstaller"  Driving me nuts!

But I do take comfort to know that if I choose to got back to WIN98 or XP, Pegasus is made for all versions of Windows. (even WIN3.1 - you just have to get the DOS version - yes there is still a DOS version of Pegasus on

the main download page.

And now that I have figured out how to move my mail files and how to configure for my ISP, I know that I can always move my email and messages from one machine to another or from one OS to another anytime

Regarding Administrator account, did you enable it? net user administrator password /persistent:yes

This is most likely a symptom of installing Pegasus Mail in either Windows \Program Files\ or \Program Files (x86)\ directory. These ones ar protected by Windows requiring elevated access rights for security reasons. Since Pegasus Mail also writes to its directories you *must* install in it into any place outside of these paths. Recommend would by a subdirectory of \My Files\ (if this is its proper name in English) which also will be backed up by Windows' own backup handling.

Why I said that I did not let it create ADMIN account by default - when I installed previously under XP and moved my mail files over, it did not see my new mail CNM files in the pmail\mail directory, they were going to the admin

directory, so I moved my CNM files there, and they showed up. I was puzzled that they could not just all be in the pmail\mail directory with the rest of my mail. So this time I unchecked the create admin and it did not make

that directory and all of my mail, including new mail, goes to pmail\mail, which is what I wanted. So as far as I know, there would be no reason for me to have the admin account.

thanks for the tip on DOS BOX - I have heard about that. have not yet tried it. there is also the XP MODE with VIRTUAL PC, which I also have not tried.

I am warming up to a file manager called mucommander. maybe I will eventually find an editor that I like. and then it will take a while to get used to these new programs. I really miss SLED and DF and LIST.
