Missing addressbooks

I'm in the western part of North Carolina which came through Hurricane Florence pretty unscathed.  She was a tropical depression by the time she got here so only minor flooding and wind damage in this area.  Nothing that affected me.  The eastern part of the state is suffering with severe flooding though.  Thanks for asking!

As for screen resolution, it can be a major problem and the only options are lowering the resolution or using some sort of magnification.  My default resolution is 1920x1080 but but Pegasus Mail was just about unusable so I lowered it to 1600x900.  That has worked just fine other than Win10 routinely asking if I want it to fix my blurry apps (I haven't seen a blurry one yet).

An accident Saturday with my Toshiba satellite laptop has proved catastrophic. At first my friendly computer help shop thought replacing the keyboard would solve things but it has proved to be terminal so I have got a new machine, an HP notebook. The hard disk was okay so now virtually everything, including Pegasus, has been transferred and installed.

Got Pegasus up and running but found some addressbooks missing. Tried updating with latest w4.73 as has worked in past with similar problems but no joy. Running Widows 10 OS, got the Toshiba hard drive. Any suggestions for retrieving missing addressbooks?

If you have access to the old mailbox data you can look to see if there are address book files that didn't get brought into the new mailbox directory.

Address books are normally made up of two files with the extension .PMR & .PM! (there could also be .PM1 but it's unlikely).

It's safe to copy any missing file pair into the new mailbox.  Suggest doing it with Pegasus Mail closed.

BTW, if the previous machine ran Win7 or prior, Pegasus Mail may have been installed inside of a \Program Files directory.  This won't work on Win10 due to its built-in file protections.  Pegasus Mail MUST reside outside of either of the \Program Files directories.

Thanks Brian
The Toshiba was running Win10 and was up-to-date.

Since my first posting I have now discovered other things missing/not transferred. The new mail folder contains about 25% less mail than it should, This may be the same with other mail folders, I can't remember exactly how many in each and haven't checked them all. Just the new folder I remember more or less and it's obvious.

So looks like not everything transferred so I have a PMAIL file on the old hard drive which, presumably, has everything before the Toshiba died and a PMAIL file on the HP SSD which is an incomplete version of the original file, plus mail downloaded today. Is there a way to combine the two without duplication of losing anything?

How you go about restoring the old mailbox data it is dependent on how similar the new install is to the old one.  It can be fairly easy if the paths to the Pegasus Mail program directory and the mailbox directory are identical on the new install as the old (they must be identical, including the mailbox directory name).  It's more difficult if they are different.

Post back with whether they are identical or different.  Also state whether the newly downloaded mail needs to be kept, and if so, if you can place it all in the new mail folder.

There are two (more or less) identical PMAIL folders.
The old folder on the hard drive shows location as:   This PC > Local Disk (E:) > PMAIL
and the new folder on the SDD shows location as:   This PC > Local Disk (C:) > PMAIL

I have checked the properties of both.
The old folder is 26.4 GB, contains 16,427 Files, 10 Folders
The new folder is 25.9 GB, contains 11,012 Files, 8 Folders

The newly downloaded mail needs to be kept and is still in the new mail folder. I have not moved it.

Hope this is sufficient information.

I am operating under the assumption the the current E: drive is the old C: drive.  If this is NOT correct then you can stop reading.  If it IS correct then here is what to try:

Rename C:\PMAIL to C:\PMAIL_NEW

Copy E:\PMAIL to C:\PMAIL

Add the -O option to your Pegasus Mail shortcut.  It should look something like C:\PMAIL\Programs\winpm-32.exe -A -O.  This is so that if Pegasus Mail opens successfully it will open in offline mode so as to not download any new mail automatically.

Run the shortcut and see if Pegasus Mail starts up.  If it does, it should look identical to the old install with the exception of any display changes the may be the result of different screen resolution.  If it doesn't start-up then you'll have to go the route of manually restoring data from the old install.  Everything below is irrelevant.

Assuming it started up and all appears well, shut it down, then copy the new mail files from the renamed instance.  These files have a .CNM extension, so if your paths are default paths, you should be copying all .CNM files from C:\PMAIL_NEW\MAIL\ADMIN to C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN.  I this doesn't make sense or doesn't look right just stop and post back for clarification.

If this all went well, startup Pegasus Mail and confirm that your new mail is there.

Now, go to Help > About Pegasus Mail and click the Info button.  Confirm the paths to the Home and New mailbox location are to C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN (or whatever you mailbox directory is named).  If they aren't, make note of what they are and post back.

If all still looks good, remove the -O option from the shortcut and restart Pegasus Mail.

You can delete C:\PMAIL_NEW once you're comfortable that you no longer need it.

Hope all goes well!

Okay and thanks Brian. I've been through your mail but before I do anything I'd like to check a couple of things.

You're correct in your assumption of the E: and C: drive.

The path shown in the shortcut is C:\PMAIL\Programs\winpm-32.exe -roam -A
However my POP3 is not configured to automatically check for new mail. I prefer to do that manually, clicking on the collect icon, so do I need to add -O ?

The new mail files and the default paths are exactly as you say. If I copy all .CNM files from NEW to the original PMAIL this will include duplicates of mails already there, Is this a problem?
The alternative would be to create a new folder in the current Pegasus, move all the old mail from before Saturday to it which should leave just new mail (maybe some duplication) in the new mail folder, All the old mail will still be in the newly created folder if needed. Does this sound okay or am I missing something?

Have checked the paths in About Pegasus Mail and they show C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Admin (for now!)

I hope all this is not me being over cautious but better safe than sorry!

No need for the the -O option if you do manual POP3 checks.

You are correct that you only want to copy the message files retrieved in the new install which you could probably do based on their date stamp but moving the old messages into a folder works too.

One question, has the Pegasus Mail instance that now resides on E: been run from E:?  If so, you might have path issues.  If this is a concern, use a text editor to open the PMAIL.INI file located in E:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN and check all the paths in it.  Hopefully they all still point to the C: drive and not E:.

Hi fives all round.

It all worked perfectly and I've got Pegasus fully back along with the newly downloaded mails. The missing address books are now there, all the mail in the new mail folder, draft messages in open saved messages are back so though I haven't checked everything I'm presuming it's all as it was.

The whole process went very smoothly. Slight concern when I started copying PMAIL from E: to C: and it said it would take over two hours but this dropped and in the end it took 15-20 minutes. I moved the old mails to a new folder as it was easier then to copy by grouping as type. Doing it my date stamp there where files with other extensions (.PMM, PMN, .PMI, .PMR, etc) mixed with them I would have had to avoid. The PMAIL_NEW file I moved from C: to E: so I can leave it on the old hard drive for the moment.

Thanks Brian for the help and advise.

Your are very welcome.  I'm glad it worked out.

I'm glad it worked out as well !
Now I just have to work out why screen resolution on this new machine makes Pegasus smaller than I'm used to.

I see you're in North Carolina. Just seen the news on dutch tv there's widespread flooding because of a dyke break (or a levee as I guess you call it). Here in the Netherlands we know all about dykes and problems from breakages and flooding. Hope you're all right.
