junk and suspicious mail

Brian Fluet says 'As for disabling the "Apply filtering rules when previewing folders"

option, I repeat with emphasis that this only applies when previewing

the folder.  Messages will be processed through filters when the folder

is opened.'

Maybe we have 'folder' and 'tray' muddled.  I repeat with emphasis that I have no filters operating.

The New Mail 'tray' in the 'My Mailbox' folder (and the From/Subject/Date/Time etc headers of the emails in it, and the message content of the first email) is what I see when I start PMAIL when Preview mode under the folders tab is ticked.  I also see the other trays in My Mailbox, one of which can be the junk tray.   Unticking Preview mode is not a sticky command - it closes the message preview during the current session, but comes back re-ticked when I start PMAIL again later on.

Anyway, having disabled the ' Apply fil...' box as described earlier, I have had no problem with the junk mail tray reappearing or having mail dumped into it for about two days.  I have just re-enebled it as a test, and immediately a new junk tray opend and 9 of the 36 emails in my New Mail tray were moved into it.

Since I now know how to resolve my problem, this is becoming an academic discussion.  Please go ahead without me as I may not respond further.

 Thanks,

Philip.

I do not need the 'junk and suspicious mail' folder, and had somehow deleted it on my old computer (w. Vista and Pmail 4.73) and done something, many years ago, that prevented it from reappearing.  I installed PMAIL fresh on a new computer (W.10, Pmail 4.73), and see that I have such a folder, and most of my mail is diverted into it, even though it is from trusted sources of reputable provenance.  I do not know what criteria PMAIL uses to move stuff into the junk folder.  The index does not contain the words 'junk' or 'suspicious', so I assume junk mail is equivalent to spam and is dealt with by the spam filters.  I have set all the spam filter settings on my new computer to the same as on the old computer, specifically, I have disabled the spamhalter filter, and have no other rule based filters in operation as far as I am aware.  Most annoyingly, if I move mail from the junk folder to other folders, PMAIL moves it back again.  How can I disable the junk and suspicious mail folder ?  I have never used a white list, and it was not necessary on the old computer, so that is not the solution.

Sounds like an autofilter is acting on these messages.  To check that, right click on any folder in the folder list then select Manage Autofilter folders.  The resulting window will list all that exist.

Thanks Brian, but as I said, I have disabled spamhalter and have no rule based filters listed as being in operation.

The solution, and I think the explanation, is a lot simpler.

Go to tools/options/incoming mail/preview mode settings, and in the dialogue box, disable 'Apply filtering rules when previewing folders'

The junk mail folder disappears and all incoming mail then stays in the 'New mail' folder.

Perhaps this does not formally resolve the problem, so I will leave this marked 'unresolved' for the moment.

Why stuff continues to be filtered with no rules in operation I dont' know, but this admittedly blunt instrument procedure does it for me.

I hope the purists are not offended !

You don't have any rules yet disabling the execution of rules solved the problem.   Hmmm.....

Methinks you have a rule somewhere.

Your fix only pertains to the previewing of the folder.  If you open it, mail will be processed through whatever rule exists.

Just to be certain - there are two types of rule sets you can apply. One is the 'global rules' and the other is a 'general rule set'. When you right-click a folder that has a rule set applied to it (not the new mail folder), you will see a tick next to 'Attach folder-open filter set' etc. If a tick exists and you are unaware which rule set has been attached, remove the tick. This will not remove the rule set per se, but it will stop it from being applied. General rule sets are listed under Tools > Mail filtering rules > Create/edit general rule set...

Don't forget autofilters.

Also, there is a line in philip's last post that said "The junk mail folder disappears and all incoming mail then stays in the 'New mail' folder.".  A folder shouldn't disappear so I'm curious about exactly what is happening.

Thanks for the responses.

I was not correct in saying the junk folder disappears.  In fact, I emptied it, then deleted it.  However, before my fix explained previously, some filtering mechanism continued to work which recreated the folder then moved about 2/3 of my new mail into it.  If I moved it back to the New Mail folder, the filter immediately moved it back again,  It was fun to watch it happen, for a while !  I have checked, and I have no rules listed under Tools > Mail filtering rules > Create/edit general rule set... nor anywhere else in the mail filtering rules menu.

On my old computer I updated Pegasus whenever a new release was available, and sometimes inbetween if a problem occurred that stopped it working properly.  I also moved Pegasus together with all email folders to several other computers for work travel according to the standard procedure for doing that, and on no occassion did the filtering re-commence, so whatever I did to my initial installation was transferred with the files I moved for the other installations.  Maybe that helps you identify what is happening.

If anyone else cannot get their filtering to work, one thing to check might be to ensure that the box I unticked IS ticked in their installation.

Philip.

I will add that on the newest computer where I just met this problem, it was a new installation, not a transfer from another computer.  A right click on the New Mail folder shows a menu with autofiltering as the third option, and under that Autofiltering is shown to be 'configured'.  I wonder what that means and how you configure it.  Maybe I have somehow configured it not to work.  The 'Manage Autofilter folders' dialogue box has no entries.  Maybe I deleted them in my earlier attempt to solve the problem.  Maybe I should have been prevented from doing that ?

A right click on a folder displays three entries associated with autofilters, "Autofilter configured", "Message filing active", "Address gathering active".  Any that are enabled will display a checkmark next them.  I don't believe autofiltering can be enabled for the new mail folder.

So, when it comes to filtering into a junk mail folder, the functions that could do that are:

  • Content Control (confirm that the Basic Spam Detection set is disabled)
  • Spamhalter (its "Enable Spamhalter" checkbox should not be ticked)
  • A new mail filter rule
  • An applied general rule set
  • Autofilters

As for disabling the "Apply filtering rules when previewing folders" option, I repeat with emphasis that this only applies when previewing the folder.  Messages will be processed through filters when the folder is opened.
