moving Pmail to a new computer

It appears that both computers have Pmail in C:\Pmail and the mail folders are C:\Pmail\Mail

I am trying to help my father configure his new laptop. We have installed Pegasus Mail and I have tried moving the old mail folder from one computer to the other via usb stick. The new mail folder has 114 emails in it from 2012. None of the 47 recent emails are present. In the past I have had no problem just moving a mail folder. What am I doing wrong?

Paths are the key. The new Pegasus Mail installation and its mailbox directory MUST be in the same directory path as on the previous machine in order to utilize the copy mailbox directory trick.

I'm not sure that is what you are doing though since you mention "new mail folder". Pegasus Mail doesn't have a folder file for new mail. New mail messages are made up of individual .cnm files located in the new mail directory.

I can provide specific advise on how best to approach the move from computer to computer if you can provide:

1. The paths on the old installation to the Pegasus Mail executables (where winpm-32.exe is).

2. The path to the mailbox directory on the old installation (directories if the new and home mailbox directories are different).

Maybe new mail folder wasn't the right term. What I meant was in the version on PMail in his old computer there were 47 new messages from this month. When I moved the folder to the new computer, there were old messages from 2012 and none of the recent messages.

I think I moved the folder from C:\Pmail\Mail to C:\PMail\Mail. I deleted the Mail folder in the new version of Pmail on the new computer beforehand.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The problem could be the result of one installation being single user and the other multi-user even though there is only one mailbox directory. This is one of the reasons why the paths I mentioned in my first post are important.

If, and only if, the installation on the old machine was to C:\PMAIL with programs files in C:\PMAIL\PROGRAMS and the mailbox directory(ies) in C:\PMAIL\MAIL then follow the steps below. Otherwise, please provide the paths I mentioned in my first post.

- If there are new messages in the new installation that need to saved then fire it up and make sure those messages are all in the Pegasus Mail new mail folder. Shut Pegasus Mail down and then copy (backup) the entire C:\PMAIL. Uninstall that Pegasus Mail. If C:\PMAIL still exists, delete it.

- Copy the entire content of C:\PMAIL from the old machine to C:\PMAIL on the new machine.

- On the new machine, use a command prompt or Run box to execute "c:\pmail\programs\winpm-32.exe -A" (no quotes). This will start Pegasus Mail and create/update the registry entries needed by the installer. Pegasus mail should look exactly like it did on the old machine except for any impact on window and font sizes by a different screen resolution.

- Shut down Pegasus Mail.

- Run the Pegasus Mail installer as if doing a new installation. It should see the copied instance and prompt to upgrade. Do the upgrade which should create the remaining needed registry entries and shortcuts.

That should do it. You can then copy the .cnm files from the backed up mailbox directory to the new one if needed.

Check the shortcut on the new machine for the same options that were in the shortcut on the old machine.

Ok, I will check with my dad and see exactly what the path is. Your point is that if it is a user path I need to do something else.

If possible, the best thing to do is to start up the old Pegasus Mail (perhaps in offline mode) and then go to Help > About Pegasus Mail. Click the "Info" button in there and report the following paths:

WINPMAIL.EXE directory:

Home mailbox location:

New mailbox location:

The offline mode I mentioned above would prevent the retrieval of any new mail. To start Pegasus Mail in offline mode add the -O (oh not zero) option to the shortcut commandline.
