Deleted Messages

Thank you one and all for your suggestions, and time. I had not realised that this would turn into such a saga.
I have indeed got the flag set to retain the Deleted Files Folder on exit. I find that it is often a necessary evil when emails do not, for some reason, arrive at their destination or I am in dispute over anything. I clear it down manually once a week.
As you can see, I have the flag set to retain Deleted Folders on EXIT.
from the copy on my PMAIL.INI file (below).
I'm sorry Brian, but I can't find anything that looks remotely like it refers to either retained or deleted Delete Folders.

The only thing (I say only, but I mean that numerically and not in any other sense!) that has changed since I had had this working perfectly (which it had been doing for over 10 years!), is that I had to reinstall Windows 10. My installed version was crawling like a snail, and getting slower!

I appreciate the time and effort that you all are expending on my behalf.

David, there's definitly something wrong with this entry:

New mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL/ADMIN

I'm not sure whether this is important in any way or fixes your issue, but this entry should read

New mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

i.e. the slash between MAIL and ADMIN needs to be a backslash like the other ones. In this case, I'm afraid, there's no way to fix it other than using NotPad (simply called Editor in recent Windows versions) - or a replacement (no formatting of any kind allowed!) - for editing this plain text file without changing anything else in the file (especially no line breaks or white space characters even though they might seem not necessary) while Pegasus Mail is closed and after you've created a backup copy. The above copy already lacks some spaces which is a side effect of conversion to HTML, so here's the proper line including the spaces:

New mailbox location = C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN

If you open your file in your plain text editor it shouldn't be too difficult to replace. Maybe this will help after a restart of Pegasus Mail, let's hope so.

I think the errant slash could only be the result of a manual edit. If the new message .CNM files and PMAIL.INI are located in C:\PMAIL\MAIL\ADMIN then I don't think the slash is causing a problem but I would definitely backup PMAIL.INI and then fix it.

Apropos, just this week I've been experiencing a problem with Deleted Messages. I have always cleared the Delete folder manually. Suddenly, it began clearing some of the messages by itself. Then it would suddenly restore some of those messages and delete others. I have both delete options checked (Basic/Advanced). I too never understood the relationship between the two. However, with me, if I clear the Basic setting, it won't send a deleted message to the Delete folder. The message disappears. But the folder remains between sessions. So I need to have the Basic setting checked. It's gotten a little strange. Never had this problem in the 20 years I've used my blessed Pegasus. My Pmail--4.73. Been waiting for David to knock on my door with good NZ tea and a helping hand. Oh well, I like to dream.

The Basic option is "Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes". If this is not checked then deleted messages are not preserved, they are just deleted.

The Advanced option is "Deleted messages folder persists between sessions". Obviously the Deleted messages folder must exist in order for it to persist between sessions. The only way that can happen is if you opt to "Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes". I believe any confusion is the result of the verbiage "Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes". This can be interpreted to mean that Pegasus Mail will ONLY preserve deleted messages until it closes which is clearly not the case.

As for your current odd Deleted messages folder behavior, I suggest the following:

  • Create a new folder called 'Deleted messages saved' and then move all Deleted messages that you want to save into that folder.
  • Untick the Advanced option "Deleted messages folder persists between sessions".
  • Restart Pegasus Mail which will remove the existing Deleted messages folder.
  • Tick the Advanced option "Deleted messages folder persists between sessions".

The result should be a new Deleted messages folder being created on next delete.

I would not move the messages back from the Deleted messages saved folder. I would delete those on whatever schedule you have been using to do your manual deletes. Delete the folder once it is empty.

If you want the Deleted messages saved folder to appear near the top of the folder list name it "1_Deleted messages saved".
I have both delete options checked (Basic/Advanced). I too never understood the relationship between the two
The Basic option is "Preserve deleted messages until Pegasus Mail closes". Many, many thanks Brian. Yet again you have dragged me out of the mire! I followed your instruction, and "wunderbar", up popped a legitimate "Deleted Messages" File in my Folders panel, and all was and is well!
Thanks also to everybody who contributed to this thread. What a wonderful community!
