Scrolling doesn't work, but only within PM folders

I wore out a Microsoft mouse and bought another Microsoft Comfort corded mouse. It works fine for everything a mouse should do, except scrolling withn a Pegasus folder. Scrolling works fine within an email, and scrolling works in other programs and apps. And the old mouse, which is still sort-of OK, scrolls just fine in PM folders. What the heck? cheers, Bruce

This problem was reported on the PM-Win listserv support list last March. In that case the scroll wheel did not work in folder lists nor in the message reader window when viewing plain text. It was an MS Comfort mouse too. For that poster, an upgrade to Win 10 was the trigger so it appeared to be the combination of an MS Comfort mouse and Win10. The poster found an old Logitech mouse that worked. There was no post to indicate that a fix was found for the MS mouse.

You can try these possible solutions before giving up on the mouse.

  • Restart Pegasus Mail
  • Cold boot the PC
  • Check for a mouse driver update

Thanks Brian, well I can scroll within the message window, but just not in folders. The folder window's slider bar still works, and so do arrow keys, but the scroll wheel would be way better. I've tried all three of your fixes to no effect, seeking a driver update gives the result that I have the up-to-date mouse driver already.
I'm using Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit. And WinPMail version 4.72.572, Feb 19 2016, build ID 572.
However! I've got hold of another mouse that does scroll normally, a 3 year old Microsoft wireless mouse which I'll be able to use instead, so the problem, if not solved, is at least sidestepped for now. Thanks again for your response.

This is one of those frustrating issues for which there may never be an explanation. One would think the a new Microsoft Comfort mouse would work the same as an old Microsoft wireless mouse, especially considering that neither one requires a special driver. The fact that the scroll problem is specific to Pegasus Mail is especially puzzling.

Now here's my special case question since you're using an outdated version of Pegasus Mail: Does this issue occur in a stand-alone folder window or in the folder pane of preview mode? If the latter, IERenderer might have an impact on this since mouse actions need to be redirected to the proper pane of the preview window, and since you haven't updated Pegasus Mail to its latest version you might not have IER's latest version installed either which could have an impact on this without knowing the exact reasons (aside from being related to input focus issues which can easily be checked by clicking into the pane once and try the wheel again after doing so).

Hi Michael, thanks for that.
I use only List Mode.
The mouse won't scroll in a folder of emails OR in a folder of folders or inside an email I'm writing. But it will scroll inside an email from someone else when I'm reading it.
I only get a new version of Pegasus Mail when I install it on a new (or new to me) computer. That's as seldom as every seven or eight years. I know this isn't best practice but everything I need - distribution lists, multiple address books, content viewers - works just fine through the life of each machine. And that's going back to about 1995. Except now for this mouse thing.
cheers, Bruce
