Rejected Emails

We have been using Pair Network to host our domains for a long time and we use their mail servers to send out our email. Now we're suddenly getting rejects from Outlook, Hotmail, and Yahoo. Pair tech support tells us there is nothing they can do about this, that those providers have changed their security and that the blocks will be removed within 24 hours, which has not happened!


Has anyone had similar experiences lately and if so, what did you do about it.

I suspect that the rejecting domains have increased their SPF, DMARC, and DKIM scrutiny resulting in your email failing one of them and being rejected. You mention hosting your domain on Pair so perhaps this Pair knowledgebase article is relevant: https://www.pair.com/support/kb/dkim/


Searching their knowledgebase for articles on SPF and DMARC might prove helpful. It is a shame that you can't rely on their customer support to help you make sure your domain is configured to meet the security checks being done by Outlook, Hotmail, and Yahoo.

I've worked with Pair in the past and they were very dependable. I had four commercial websites hosted there, each domain with extensive use of e-mail for commercial and support. IIRC that was a catch-all e-mail type and the message classification done by Pegasus rules. Of course the only problem I had was filtering out the spam.

Pair's support isn't what it used to be, but I finally connected with a knowledgable support rep who seems to have fixed the problem by re-configuring the SPF and DKIM. The distribution lists are working again without any rejects and lo&behold so is our Pair Mail List. What he did and how is way beyond my pay grade, but I'm grateful for the fix. And thanks to all here for their help. I'm looking forward to the forthcoming 4.81 since 4.80 just wouldn't work properly with my setup. It was Brian who suggested that I wait for it and stay with 4.73. As usual his advice has been right on the money.

Perhaps unrelated to your issue, but David H. mentioned SPF and DKIM in this month's Progress Updates. Not yet publicly available and primarily Mercury targeted, it may smooth out some of these glitches.

@Tariya, I now recommend upgrading to the 4.81 Public Beta. Although it is still in 'beta' status, it has been so for a long time, is well tested, and is solid. There is a known issues that affects folks who have their Home and New mailbox locations in different directories but that is rare. To check whether it would affect you, in Pegasus Mail go to the Help | About Pegasus Mail menu item then click the Info button. The resulting display will contain entries showing the paths to the Home mailbox location and the New mailbox location. If they are the same, then 4.81 is a worthwhile upgrade. Back up your existing installation first though, just in case.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Another anomaly has recently been discovered that can occur during the upgrade. It is very rare too, but IMO, is a show-stopper without obtaining advise on how to proceed. The image below is what you should see when you run the 4.81 installer. Note the installation path and the buttons: Upgrade, New install, and Exit. If you don't see this window, exit the installation and post back.

I saw the mention of SPF and DKIM in this month's Progress Update. The problem was with domains and not Pegasus, evidently fixed now. But thanks for the headsup.

Brian... I have Pegasus installed on an external drive using the Roam switch and adding additional security. The only problem is that occasionally on startup it trolls all the folders from 0 to 650, which is an annoyance and nothing more. It's been that way for years which I've attributed to the Roam status.
