POP and SMTP definitions "hidden"

Hello
I just installed Version 4.8.1 in order to access GMail accounts.
All works fine
But when I use my different PMail accounts (GMail ad Non GMail), I have the following problems

1) When I try to read my mail, I get the following message :
"You don't have an active POP3 definition for downloading mail via the Internet, so no selective download is possible"

2) When I try to send a new mail, I get the message :
"You do not have an active SMTP definition for sending mail via the Internet, so no action can be taken"

I checked in "Network configuration" and it seems my definition are "hidden"

If I go to "POP definition" , click on "Add", the name of my POP definition appears - I click on "Select" and then can
access my waiting mail
The same process works for the SMTP definition

But if I close Pegasus Mail and restar t it later, both definitions are "hidden" again !

Did I forget something or did something wrong ? I would like to have these definitions to be permanent !

T hanks for any help and advice - Have a good day

I believe this is an issue that happens if you have moved your Mail directory to a different location.

Way I remember to solve the issues.

  1. Search your system for files with the PND extention under C:\PMAIL or whatever drive you have.
  2. You will find that the files you mention are somewhere in the path.

Example. In my test setup, I have a user called Jill, so its original MAIL directory was C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Jill
But I moved the MAIL Directory to C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Jill2
So, the real PND files are located in C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Jill2
Quick solution was to just copy the PND files from C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Jill2 into C:\PMAIL\MAIL\Jill.

Later did test, and files don't have to be the same, can even be same names, but even work if they are 0 byte files.
But something seems to look for the files in the original users Mail directory.

So, would take a look at that. Also, make backups of the PND files just to be safe.

My Primary Pegasus has using the standard mail directory, but did this test when a user was having the the same problem. Don't recall if someone had another solution, but that solved issue in my tests.

Good Luck.

I regret that you have encountered this problem. It is one of the few issues that have been identified in v4.81. It only affects installations where the Home and the New mailbox locations are not the same directory. What is happening is that v4.81 only looks in the New mailbox directory for the POP3 and SMTP host configuration files (.PND files) during startup. Pegasus Mail will not see them if they are in the Home mailbox directory causing failure and disappearance as the select hosts in Internet Options. They can be re-selected but will disappear again on next startup. The workaround is to place a copy of the POP?????.PND and SMT?????.PND files in the New mailbox directory.

If you don't know the directory location of your Home and New mailboxes you can find them from within Pegasus Mail by using the Help pull-down menu, selecting "About Pegasus Mail...", then clicking the "Info" button.

Thanks for your quick answers
My PMail (programs and mail "boxes" are on D: in a directory named PEGASUS_MAIL
On this D: drive, thre is also a directory named PEGASUS_ARCHIVES (I don't remember if
I created it on purpose or if it was done by Pegasus itself !)

When I search for "PND" files, I find them in BOTH subdirectories of these directories

Is that normal ?

Which one should I keep ?

Thanks again for your time !

I looked at the "Info" in the Help art and this is what appears

WINPMAIL.EXE directory: D:\PEGASUS_MAIL\Programs
Home mailbox location: D:\PEGASUS_ARCHIVES\SERGE
New mailbox location: D:\PEGASUS_MAIL\MAIL\serge
TMP environment variable: C:\Users\Serge\AppData\Local\Temp
TEMP environment variable: C:\Users\Serge\AppData\Local\Temp

That seems consistent with my 2 directories

Can I safely copy PND files from the "Home Mailbox" to the "New mailbox" ?

Thanks

Yes. Your goal is to have them in both locations.

As for the PEGASUS_ARCHIVES\SERGE directory, Pegasus Mail would not have created it.

As for the .PND files in both directories, I believe that when Home and New become in different locations, existing .PND files stay in Home but newly created ones are placed in New, it could be vice versa though. Regardless, they can exist in either one. The problem in v4.81 will be fixed in the next release. When that happens, I believe it will be best to place all .PND files in HOME, being sure to keep only the newest one in the event of duplicates.

Hello Brian
Thank you for your advices - It works fine

I have one question : When I "updated" PMail to version 4.8.1, I did it "over" the previous version
I was told there was an existing version and I clicked on "Upodate"
I was never asked or told about an "old" and "new" directory and I had no choice for a directory where the installation would go
Is that normal ? Is there a way to "force" the instalation directory ?

Anyway, it works much bett er now - I have both access to GMail and my former accounts !

Thanks again

P.S Please excuse my wording - English is not my native language !

The installer reads a registry key that contains the path to the last run instance of Pegasus Mail and offers to install to that directory. There is a Browse button to select a different directory, or you can manually overtype the proposed path.

Upgrades are best unless you intentionally want to create a new, clean installation. Making a backup before upgrading is wise.
